The Other iTunes Phone

Written on February 15, 2005 by Nick Santilli and 1 person has commented

Sony just announced it will be releasing a cell phone that will apparently compete with the “iTunes Phone” from Motorola.

It’ll be named after Sony’s long dominant (until the iPod came along) Walkman line of products. And get this:
It’ll play mp3 and AAC files! So resumably you could move your iTMS purchased music to this new SE cell phone.

Kind of cool to have some competition in that respect. In fact, does anyone else find it odd that the product announcement page for the Motorola “iPhone” has no mention of iTunes or AAC file playback?

  • ITMS music will only work if Sony uses Apple’s FairPlay DRM, which is unlikely unless Apple lets them license it. Regular (unprotected) AAC files encoded in iTunes or another application will probably work.
