Apple to rename Rendezvous, rumored replacement name is “Bonjour”.
According to AppleInsider, Apple is on track to rename its Rendezvous technology to “Bonjour” as part of a settlement with Tibco Software of Palo Alto, CA over the Redezvous trademark. Apple’s Rendezvous technology, also known in the industry as Zero Configuration networking, enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. It uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically find each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers.
Apple reportedly was initially going to rename the technology to OpenTalk, but that was nixed as sounding too “techie”. The name was changed to Bonjour because “..when Rendezvous-enabled computers and devices come within range of each other, they say ‘hello,’ ” to let the other machines on the network know that they are there.
Personally, I would have liked “OpenTalk” better. “Bonjour” may make for great home user marketing, but I think it will sound lame in the enterprise.
