ive set up my hotmail and gmail accounts but i cannot access my folders…any ideas??

I used to have my mail working on gmail, but now, I keep having this message each time I try getting my mails on mail: The server “smtp.gmail.com” cannot be contacted on the default ports.

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.

If you have a POP account with gmail, you cannot Send mail For that,yiu need an imap account with gmail.from apple mail .

Gmail has a limit of 20M per message (including the message and any attachments) that applies IIRC whenever a message is to be stored on or pass through Google’s servers (so if you are using IMAP you wont be able store anything bigger, if you are using googles smtp server you wont be able to send anything bigger). Obviously if you are using your own ISP for SMTP and storing mail locally (as you would with POP3) your limit will depend on your ISP.

As an aside, you probably shouldn’t be using mail for transferring files bigger than 20M anyway, that is what all those other transfer protocols are for…

Oh and “I know this post is from 2005″ I signed up for notifications so happily once every few months I get to see people are still using this post and comment thread, just show’s how permanent the web can be…

Hello,

I know this post is from 2005, but I have a question. If I set up my Mail account using my Gmail information, am I going to be able to send bigger files than what I would if I only used Gmail?

I hope that makes sense. Gmail and Yahoo only let you send 10MB or something per email, will I be able to send bigger if I use Mail wired to Gmail.

i recently added (started forwarding) another account to my gmail account and then decided to re-set-up my gmail account on apple mail. my problem: all of my mail from the other account is dated from the date i started forwarding it to gmail: e.g. emails from 2006 are dated sept 10, 2008. this is not a problem on my html gmail account, but somehow this happened in translation. any thoughts?

I just wanted to say I was going to go nuts soon until I saw this tip and believe me, it worked like a freakin’ charm!! If anything, try this tip..It will save you from throwing your computer out the window :)

I had a problem when changing my firewall settings on the router to a higher level. The incoming gmail msgs were not getting through on apple mail. So I allowed the ports 995 and 587 outbound through the router and that seemed to do the trick

I discovered that by going to my GMail settings page using a web browser and switching *off* POP access, saving the settings, then turning it back *on*, saving the settings, fixed this problem.

even tho i’m using imap, changing the port to 587 was all i needed to do. too bad i spent an hour trying everything else before i found this page. google only suggested ports 25 or 400 something for imap users, for some strange reason??? anyways, thanks a lot!

With the latest version of Mail (possibly other earlier versions as well), just enter your gmail e-mail address and leave the option “Automatically setup account” checked. This option appears dynamically when you enter an e-mail address that the Mail application recognizes. Sending and receiving are a breeze!

Hi; I followed all your fantastic instructions and set up my two gmail accounts to Mac Mail and all my emails were imported :D However Mail won’t let me send mail out; I get the following error: Cannot send message using the server stmp.gmail.com’. Anybody have any ideas with about this? I’d really appreciate some nerdy techie geniusness – I’m driven up the walls with it and am so sick of signing in and out of accounts for work every two minutes!
