Wait for it… Wait for it…

Written on June 09, 2005 by Nick Santilli and 118 people have commented

This is slightly Off Topic, but a good little read. You’ll see the relevance at the end. It’s a comment from Slashdot, on the post titled, “Nerds Make Better Lovers”. You can read the comment at Slashdot, here, or below, as I’ve copied and pasted it. Terrificly funny stuff.

HER DIARY:

Saturday, May 21st 2005

Saw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely. I went shopping in the afternoon with the girls and I did turn up a bit late so thought it might be that. The bar was really crowded and loud so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk. He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we go somewhere nice to eat. All through dinner he just didn’t seem himself; he hardly laughed and didn’t seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was saying. I just knew that something was wrong. He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in; he hesitated but followed. I asked him again if there was something the matter but he just half shook his head and turned the television on. After about 10 minutes of Silence, I said I was going upstairs to bed. I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him deeply. He just gave a sigh and a sad sort of smile. He didn’t follow me up but later he did, and I was surprised when we made love. He still seemed distant and a bit cold, and I started to think that he was going to leave me and that he had found someone else. I cried myself to sleep.
MAN’S DIARY:

Saturday, May 21st 2005

Apple switched to Intel.

Absolutely gutted.

Got a shag though.

Ahhh, so funny. Can’t say I had that “gutted” feeling, but I know plenty of you out there do - hopefully this gave those of you who needed it, a laugh.

And thanks to ackthpt for the great comment.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAA Nick you made my day :D

  2. #2 Chris says:

    That was great. Thanks. :)

  3. #3 Patrick says:

Though posted elsewhere it was still hilarious!

  4. #4 Justin says:

this is a very strange question but the title “wait for it, wait for it” is that from a movie? it sounds very familiar and I could swear I heard it in a recent movie, my friends and I have been trying to figure it out but have come up with nothing, it’s driving us nuts. Please help, if it’s not from a movie sorry for the dumb e-mail.

  5. #5 Nick Santilli says:

Justin - just meant it in a comedic sense. as in the punch line, “wait for it…” You know it’s coming, it’s just waiting for the moment you read it.

that’s all. I’m sure it’s in some movies, or tv shows, but it’s nothing specific I was quoting.

sorry to drive you and your friends crazy over it. :)

  6. #6 Haroof Majnoon says:

wait for it, wait for it, … what movie is that from. I’m dying to know. It’s killing me.

  7. #7 proof says:

    Wait for it…..wait for it….

    That’s from Braveheart.

    Great movie.

  8. #8 Nick Santilli says:

Actually in braveheart, it’s “Hold. Hold. Hold!”

    :)

  9. #9 Jenn says:

I stumbled across this blog while actually looking to find out where “Wait for it … wait for it” is from. If anyone knows for absolute sure and can send me a link to a site with the quote on it please email me, thank you =].

  10. #10 sherbob says:

This is amazing….we too have had that line “wait for it, wait for it” stuck in our heads for the past few weeks and we can’t remember where it came from. Can someone please let us know — this is consuming way too much of our time and energy right now.

  11. #11 Kelly says:

Is it from First Knight? The Camelot army is in the woods, being charged, and King Arthur doesn’t want his army to get too excited. My coworker and I are driven nuts by this too.

    Kelly

  12. #12 Nick Santilli says:

    hahaha!

Sorry to be driving everyone nuts about this. I honestly don’t remember it being from something specific. I think it was mentioned earlier, that Braveheart may be one place, but First Knight seems a likely suspect as well.

Josh has been trying to get a contest idea going to do some give aways here on The Apple Blog - maybe solving this mystery will be one of the contests…

  13. #13 Rebecca says:

That is funny because I just had some one ask me what movie that quote is from….I can’t remember the name of the movie….
    It’s like: “Wait for it….wait for it…….Now!”

Damn it what is the movie?

  14. #14 Rebecca says:

That is funny because I just had some one ask me what movie that quote is from….I can’t remember the name of the movie….
    It’s like: “Wait for it….wait for it…….Now!”

Damn it what is the movie?

  15. #15 Tom says:

    You’ve all waited long enough.

    Ghostbusters :)

  16. #16 Buckshot El Caribe says:

Well, Arnold says it in Kindergarten Cop. That came out before Braveheart (and as someone already mentioned, in Braveheart Gibson says “Hooooold… HOOOOOLD…” not “Wait for it… wait for it…”

  17. #17 Buckshot El Caribe says:

Oh, and it wasn’t from Ghostbusters as far as I can tell…

    http://www.movie-page.com/scripts/Ghostbusters.htm

  18. #18 Trish says:

    It was killing us to…
The line: Wait for it…Wait for it…
    is from Kindergarten Cop.
Arnold says it to the class while trying to introduce the whistle.
    http://www.script-o-rama.com/movie_scripts/k/kindergarten-cop-script-transcript-schwarzenegger.html

  19. #19 Beefarelli says:

im not sure but ghostbusters could be right also
movie scripts are not always the same as what you end up seeing, esp with great improvationalists like the ones in that movie

i came here looking for where it was from too. interesting..

  20. #20 lindsay says:

This is the hardest quote to find! I’ve tried looking everywhere and I still have no clue! This is driving me crazy!
I guess it could be from either Kindergarten Cop or Ghostbusters, but I thought the movie was more recent than that?
    Any other ideas?

  21. #21 Chris Holland says:

What about one of the original star wars? right before Luke destroys the Death Star from his X-Wing? He’s flying in that narrow trench, holding for the perfect moment to launch that bomb in “the hole”.

  22. #22 Buckshot El Caribe says:

I can see where you might think Star Wars. The first guy (not Luke) who makes the run at the thermal exhaust port says “Almost there… almost there…”.

Thats definitely not it though. I don’t need to look up the script either, I can quote it from memory =)

  23. #23 Phil Hurlbert says:

“Wait for it . . . Wait for it” is in Patch Adams when Robin Williams begins his “hello experiment” and swing down in front of the elderly lady, and then wait for the smile to come. Wait for it . . . Wait for it . . . Now! I don’t know, but would like to.

  24. #24 John says:

It’s a quote from early episodes of M*A*S*H when Radar says, “Choppers!” and in reaction to everyone else’s questioning looks he says confidently, “Wait for it…” and seconds later everyone scrambles because they finally hear them.

  25. #25 John says:

A transcript of the pilot episode of M*A*S*H can be found at http://www.twiztv.com/scripts/mash/season1/mash-101.htm .

  26. #26 Brad says:

I saw it in The Simpsons. Homer thought the end of the world was coming at a certain time, so he made everyone go up on a hill and wait. When the time came, nothing happened, so he said “wait for it, wait for it”. The y cut forward in time, and he is still saying it and his voice is hoarse. I’m sure they were quoting it from a movie because that is what they do.

  27. #27 Ken says:

Finally… I have been racking my brain for 4 hours now trying to remember where in the hell I heard that line… “Wait for it, wait for it”.

Most recently, it was “The Simpsons” with Homer on top of the hill waiting for the world to end. Thank you for helping me prevent further loss of time and brain cells trying to figure this out.

    Also…

It was in “Star Wars” but I believe it was “The Empire Strikes Back” when the Death Star (being rebuilt) was destroyed by the Millenium Falcon.

  28. #28 Sydney says:

So, have we come to a consensus as to what movie “Wait for it…Wait for it…Now!!” comes from? It is nice to know that there are other people out there who have as much free time in the world as I do to ponder these types of things. We’re dying over here…PLEASE HELP US!!!

  29. #29 Jenna says:

AHHHH this is killing me…. what is it this quote from!?!?! Does Sandlot sound right?

  30. #30 Amy says:

Seriously, my friends and I are trying to figure out where that quote is from as well, it’s something very recent! Help! I can’t believe how many people are wondering the same thing!

  31. #31 Justin says:

I think its from Big Daddy when they through the stick at the roller blader

  32. #32 Ken says:

Was it not somewhere in the Matrix?.. But yes I think the movie Big Daddy is right.

  33. #33 brian says:

after 3 days of this goddamn quote being in my head, ive come to the conclusion it is driving me insane, so i decided to look online, and crazy enough that night i named the movie sandlot and big daddy, but i dont think it is it…its something recent from the end of 2005 to sometime in 2006, keep thinkin people

  34. #34 Nick Santilli says:

    brian -
well, when I posted it, it was june of 2005, and people started racking their brains about it nearly immediately. so I don’t think the quote is from the end of 05/early 06.

I honestly don’t know what it’s from specifically, just one of those things stuck in my head.

Sorry to be driving everyone so nuts!

  35. #35 kgibian says:

The quote is from one of the OCEAN films, either OCEAN’s 11,12 or 13.

  36. #36 CASEY says:

i too am here from a completely spontaneous search for a movie with the lines “wait for it… wait for it” this has been driving my wife and i insane since she asked. even her trividiot savant brother is stumped. but, like you all, it seems to be at the tip of everyones tongue. i guess the answer could be (as demonstrated here) that its from everything, like trying to source “en guarde” or something equally universal, but based on everybodys frustration, it seems more on the level of Jurrasic park’s “clever girl”– most DEFINITELY from one biggie…
    arrrrgh…
    let me know………

  37. #37 Nick Santilli says:

What’s funny is that I don’t think there was just a single place this came from when I posted it. Stuck in my mind is that it’s from some Seinfeld episode, but I really can’t back that up.

I’ve mentioned to my wife about the comment thread going on here, and so now, everytime we hear the phrase, “Wait for it…” we start laughing.

I think most recently we heard it in Pixar’s Cars. Sorry for the sleepless nights everyone, I never intended that!!

  38. #38 Jason C says:

I went to Quiznos for lunch today in Oxnard CA. I bought a Nirvana Sobe and under the cap was the words, “Wait for it… Waaait for it.” My search for this movie quote led me to this blog.

I thought it was from Sandlot where they’re trying to get the ball back from the Beast.

    ahh well…

    Happy Hunting

  39. #39 Matt says:

I got this movie phrase “wait for it … wait for it” stuck in my head this morning, and two hours later I ended up here. Looks like different people might be remembering different instances in different films, but having read through these posts, I’m nearly certain that the version stuck in my head is indeed from *Ocean’s 12* … I just can’t rememer where/when!

  40. #40 David says:

Isn’t this phrase from a war movie, Saving Private Ryan maybe, when he is using the sticky bomb on the tank and they are hiding in the trench?

  41. #41 Lee says:

I read it in a review for Snakes on a Plane awhile back. The reviewer said Snakes on a Plane is a movie about, wait for it, wait for it, Snakes on a Plane!!!!
Now my son goes around saying wait for it, wait for it, Snakes on a Plane!!!!
Maybe it is just stuck in the group conscienceousness or something and not really from any movie?

  42. #42 philthecoffeejerk says:

they say wait for it wait for it in mel brooks’ robin hood men in tights

  43. #43 basco33 says:

I’m also hunting for this quote…it’s completely blowing my mind how many people are doing the exact same thing…and worse yet, no one knows where it’s from…i’ve tapped all of my resources and then figured google could help me out…guess i was wrong…

    anyway…here’s our guesses so far…

simpsons (homer sometime), american pie (hiding in closet for naked girls), jaws (ready to shoot the shark), old school (no idea)….thats all i have..

by the way, star wars quote is …”stay on target, stay on target….nice shot jansen!”

  44. #44 Dave says:

Guys…lets end this once and for all. A few months back on a cold night in New Jersey, I actually coined the phrase “wait for it” as a group of friends and I watched TV and waited for the NYC ball to drop on December 31. They were anxious to beat their pots and pans together prior to the actual changing of the year, and it was only due to my calm, collected chanting of “wait for it…wait for it” that they didn’t prematurely celebrate.
A month or so passed after that rowdy celebration and I began to use the phrase in everyday conversation. Eventually, I decided that the best use of the phrase “wait for it” would be in a situation in which you say something seemingly funny, but to your dismay, no one laughs. In response, one should say “wait for it” and walk away. Laughter will ring in your ears as you drift off into the sunset.
Of course, the phrase caught on…may have been picked up in a couple recent movies (not sure, and I didn’t think to copyright it at the time), and it even made its way to this discussion.
As an FYI, in addition to “wait for it,” I’ve also coined the phrases: “sweet-ass” (to show glee), “monkey-boy” (to describe a funny looking boy), and “no-homo” (to explain that while what you just said could be construed as meaning you have certain thoughts, you do not). By the way, none of these phrases are copyrighted either, so enjoy.

    Glad I could help.

  45. #45 Nick Santilli says:

lol - I’m almost willing to take Dave’s explanation. Good stuff Dave.

My wife and I seem to hear the term ‘wait for it, wait for it’ weekly. It’s in some tv show, some commercial, some comedy sketch, some movie. It’s everywhere. Pick your source I guess.
This may not put anyone’s mind at ease, but we can start posting a list of shows/movies/whatever that repeat this quote. Do it as you hear it so you don’t forget. I’ll start pulling them from comments and post them as an EDIT to the end of this article post.

  46. #46 Erin says:

This is hysterical. I just watched Veronica Mars Season 2, Episode 19 and starting dying laughing when I heard the phrase “Wait for it…” I have spent so many hours in years past googling this and have infected many friends with this same disease. My roommate decided to google tonight after the subject came up yet again. I am happy that this discussion has been going on for a over year, because it makes me feel a little less crazy.

I hope the original is discovered. Until then, we will just have to “wait for it.” Pardon the pun.

  47. #47 JOhnnny says:

its from every movie u LOSERS now get a life !

  48. #48 Emily says:

i love my best friend JOhnny and i love this quote!

  49. #49 muskie cat says:

It seems to me the phrase “wait for it” was used quite a bit by the Monty Python troupe… as in waiting for people to get the joke and then laugh…

  50. #50 Sandler says:

This is from my movie Big Daddy. I said it when I was teaching the kid when to throw the stick in front of the rollerbladers.

  51. #51 Chris Holland says:

heh dare i ask whether this really is Adam Sandler? :)

  52. #52 gillibean says:

is the quote from only fools and horses - the one with the chandelier

  53. #53 John says:

I absolutely cannot believe how many people have posted on this deal looking for the exact same thing that I am looking for. It was killing me and the people I work with for a while, and after talking about it about two months ago, I looked it up. This is insnae. I’m sure it’s from a lot of different things, but I haven’t seen most of the things you’ve already listed. Simpsons, MASH, Ghostbusters, Braverheart. I know I’m missing out.. but I think it might be in star wars. Maybe also in one of the ninja turtles movies. Also, I bet it was on one of the episodes of friends.. it sounds very chandler.

  54. #54 Rich says:

OK, so oddley enough I was asked to site this very quote today at work and have racked my brain all day trying to figure it out… I cannot confirm this but wasn’t this quoted in The Matrix right before the EMP switch was thrown? Hummm… I will have to dig it out and watch it now… I’ll be back.

  55. #55 Rich says:

    (oddly) :-)

Yeah, I know - not ANY of the Matrix films…

I guess I’m going to have to consult The Oracle on this one.

  56. #56 Eric says:

This is amazing. My wife and I have been infecting people with this question since 2004. The fact that there are others out there helps a little. But anyway, the “wait for it, wait for it. . . ” quote I always think of is older than 2005, and it may be from something from the 1980’s. It isn’t Sandlot or Braveheart or Ghostbusters, I checked (good guesses though). Crazy.

  57. #57 Ben says:

    Wow.

I thought I remembered seeing it in Top Gun, but I haven’t seen it in a while…

Maybe it is because all of my friends usually use this phrase with “that’s a negative ghostrider. the pattern is full”

  58. #58 Bexy says:

i just posted a bulletin about this on myspace. me and my older sister have quoted this for years, but i dont remember what movie its from, it would be quite disapointing if it was just from “every movie.” i, like number38(Jason C), also got a Sobe with the quote in it, and it made me laugh, but i dont know y, lol. I’ll be back with thee answer, look me up on myspace at:
    http://www.myspace.com/caligirlinhi

  59. #59 Monkey Balls says:

It is from Robin Williams Live comedy show. He is talking about the monkeys in the zoo and how they get together when there are class school trips and they say “wait for it” wait for it” “now.” The monkeys then throw thier poop etc. at the students.

  60. #60 basco33 says:

    Ok…although it is everywhere…

    it definitely appears in:

Simpsons “Thank God its not Doomsday”
    Robin Hood, Men in Tights
    Kindergarden Cop
Blue Collar TV (Remote in toaster skit)

    It is NOT in:
    Braveheart
    Ghostbusters
    Star Wars
    Army of Darkness
    American Pie

    Please add to the lists…

  61. #61 God Johnson says:

This phrase first originated on the Action Squad website (www.actionsquad.org), where Max Action has been telling us to wait for a site update for years. He started it.

  62. #62 Hope says:

Ok,so I’ve ended up here just like everyone else wondering where this came from, and my coworker and I are about to pull our hair out. PLEASE! SOMEONE PUT AN END TO THIS MADNESS! Someone mentioned Friends…. perhaps??

  63. #63 rob says:

    YES… SANDLOT

  64. #64 mark says:

I heard this in 3 back to back episodes tonight. Weird that I would end up here. How I met your mother”, “The new adventures of Old Christine”, “The Class”

  65. #65 Chris says:

OK, I thought of the movie you might be thinking of. In Superman Returns, when Lex Luthor is in the basement with his gang and drops the shard of kryptonite into the water he states, “Wait for it, wait for it”. Could this be what you are thinking of?

  66. #66 mike says:

this is REALLY REALLY ODD AND FRIGHTENING. my sister and i have been trying to dredge up the source of this line for a few years now and its been driving us mad. does this not strike anybody else as.. well.. a little.. weird.

  67. #67 mike says:

i might add that we went through all our old films, [same as above... another weird coincidence] and i have to say it was from none of the ones listed above. its from a movie im sure, ive seen many times since i was a child/teen, but never revisited. we watched ghostbusters, and braveheart and starwars, and just got through robin hood prince of theives when we came across this blog. and its freaking me out.

  68. #68 firewall says:

Luogo interessante, buon disegno, lo gradisco, signore! =)

  69. #69 Nikudada says:

    To add to basco33’s list:

Happy Gilmore - when happys putt rolls past the hole and then the announcer says wait for it….wait for iiiitttt.. it sinks and then everyone screems.

  70. #70 Aurynanya says:

I have never seen Sandlot, Snakes on a Plane (regrettably) and I know I have heard this quote before. Robin Hood, Men in Tights I think is the oldest movie that the line has proven to be in.. As for the Simpsons, they have been re-manufacturing jokes and people etc from the beginning of time and that’s part of what makes it funny. It seems to me it has been said VERY seriously.. and also very funny. I have both versions in my head. Among the following people I envision saying it are: Mel Gibson (serious line), Jack Black (go figure), Brad Pitt (sarcastically but serious), Ben Stiller (funny), and lastly, Will Ferrel. I don’t know if this will spark any memories but… I, too, am here because I am dying to know where it came from! I said it the other day in a conversation (funny version) and it definately has some mileage to it! hahah Anyways, I’m am personally getting tired of “waiting for it” so someone figure it out! lol GREAT! ::eyeroll:: now David Spade is stuck in my head saying it, too.
    ~Aurynanya

  71. #71 Christine says:

I just watched the Sandlot and it is not from that movie.

  72. #72 mike says:

its not the bloody sandlot or robin hood men in tights or superman

  73. #73 Cameron says:

I got it! It only took a couple of months. This is conserning the “Wait for it, wait for it” quote. I remembered it from Robin William’s “Live On Broadway”. He says it pretending to be a monkey when a school’s field trip comes to the zoo. There might be others but this is the style in which I was saying it.

  74. #74 winglessflite says:

Wait for it….wait for it…are you ready??

Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Can’t you just hear Cary Elwes voice saying that?

  75. #75 john says:

How about in BackDraft when Kurt Russell says it in the building trainging the probees right before the one fireman get cooked,”wait for it…wait for it…”? Or maybe in Memphis Belle before Billy Zane drops the bombs? This is becoming really unhealthy.

  76. #76 Chris says:

It’s in Life of Brian, although only one utterance.

Centurion to people lined up with crosses over their shoulders: “Crucifixion party…”
    People start to stagger forward.
    Centurion: “Wait for it!”

  77. #77 Ryan says:

It was in at least one Farside cartoon. I will have to break out my Farside books and figure out which one.

  78. #78 It Boy says:

It’s also in King Kong ;)

  79. #79 JerryBrightonhammer says:

What in the name of Jerry Brightonhammer was that all about?
I dont’ know but it doesn’t make sense to me.

  80. #80 Jessica says:

It def. is in Big Daddy, but I think it is in lots of movies. I can’t believe those of you have watched through all of those movies just to figure this out. Thanks for all of the leg-work! :)

  81. #81 MeMyself&I says:

Think about it people… Robin Williams Live on Broadway came before ALL of the movies you have mentioned with the possible exception of Life of Brian - however… the quote we all have in our minds, that has been used over and over again to everyone’s delight, was coined by Robin Williams himself! He is the one who made the “wait for it… wait for it…” so QUOTEABLE. We all watched that live comedy. All the people in the movies you’ve quotes saw him and are quoting him. He even quoted himself in Patch Adams.

Robin Williams gets the award for having coined this.
    We’re done!
    I have spoken.

  82. #82 mike says:

what about ‘jaws’ or ’searching for bobby fisher’

  83. #83 gippy says:

    FAMILY GUY BOZOS

  84. #84 Kevin says:

I am picturing Cary Elwes saying it. It was either in The Princess Bride or Robin Hood men in tights.

  85. #85 Carl says:

    Caddyshack!

  86. #86 jim says:

with the gopher! caddyshack! that’s it!

  87. #87 Chris says:

It’s definitely in Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Kindergarden Cop, and Robin Williams: Live on Broadway (which I think is the funniest of them all). But a buddy of mine brought up that’s its also in Die Hard (1)

  88. #88 Sean says:

This is an absolute phenomenon! Like many of you, I’ve had this movie quote stuck in my head for awhile and can not pin down exactly what film it’s from. Isn’t it strange that we’ve all been lead to this site? We’re like the group of people at the end of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Exciting stuff. Anyhow, I can hear a male voice saying this in my head, like a Russel Crowe, real leading man type. And I believe he is standing behind a few other guys who are about to shoot or release something. So he’s telling them to “Wait for it” and the tension builds up as you think he’s waiting too long to “attack”. Then they release and the shit hits the fan in the scene. I can hear it and almost see it but I can’t name the film! Like you all it’s driving me nuts!! At first I thought it was Superman Returns but I don’t think that’s the original source. It’s not any of the other movies listed above, though it may be Jaws? It’s not Star Wars, that’s “Stay on target”, it just uses the same phrasing as “Wait for it”. Wait, is it Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers??? At the Battle of Helm’s Deep? When the Orks are climbing the walls or when the Elves are ready to release their first arrows upon the Ork army? Or is it in any of the Lord of the Rings movies? Am I on to something here? ANSWER ME!!!

  89. #89 Erik says:

I’m in Denmark and my coworkers and I say this line constantly, and it’s driving us insane! Thanks for all the possible flicks… This is very Close Encounters - doo doo doooo dooo dooooooo!

  90. #90 Duze says:

it is from that bud light commercial with the two monkeys and only the one can make the leap…the other monkey is sayin wait for it wait for it and then the other monkey smiles at a camera when he says now

  91. #91 jerry says:

    This site is too weird….
I am thinking a movie like Saving Private Ryan. Some war movie, battle scene, kinda like what Sean says, but more historical/real….

  92. #92 Erik says:

I just watched “Conversations With God” and the publisher-guy actually says “wait for it” twice to the Neil Walsh character; BUT there’s no “NOW!”

  93. #93 Scott says:

#82 Mike is right - it’s Searching for Bobby Fisher during the championship chess match. That’s the one I remember it from anyway

  94. #94 andre says:

what the hell is wrong with you people?! It’s from nowhere in particular. Thats like saying, “hey, where is that phrase ‘Nice to meet you’ from? I think Ive heard it in a movie” …WTF!?

  95. #95 Scott says:

Oh that’s great Andre - and I bet you’re the type that goes around telling kids there’s no Santa Clause right???

  96. #96 chris holland says:

    wh…whaaa? *twitch* *sniffles* …nn..nnoo santa? :( *cries* :~(

  97. #97 Tony says:

I first started down this path to insanity when a good friend of mine, who was dying of cancer, posed the question. Literally on his deathbed, he asked, “What was the first movie to use hte phrase, ‘Wait for it… wait for it… NOW.’”

He died in 2005, and I suspect he’s somewhere laughing his head off at the fact that he poisoned the minds of several dozen of his friends before he left!

Yes, andre, it’s from nowhere in particular. But it’s human nature to wonder about the origins of such things, and that’s probably why you were here in the first place.

  98. #98 tyler says:

could it be from Richie Rich when they are throwing the manure bags at the guys by the fountain?

  99. #99 bruford74 says:

The one you guys are talking about is the same one I am trying to figure-out.
I am almost positive it came from an English character like Michael Cain on one of his recent movies.

  100. #100 dietcokehed says:

I too landed on this blog looking for the “wait for it” quote. This is a damn funny thread…just the existence of ALL these people looking for that damn quote. I’ve read enough movie and show titles here to realize I must have heard it in MANY places…I’m a movie-whore after all :)
I’m not even gonna bother wondering where it originated, because that’s probably not where I even heard it!!

  101. #101 pasteycakes says:

i’m probably bringing this back to life, but it just started really bothering me too. i can just picture it, the searching enemy passs a hiding group of the ‘good guys’ who are ready to surprise attack them, but the leaders holding them back for a few seconds and then lets them go with a “NOW!”

    gahhh! what is it??

  102. #102 dietcokehed says:

I think I figured out where I’ve heard it the most recently. Doesn’t Barney on How I Met Your Mother say it a lot? I haven’t actually seen that show in about a year…but I’m thinking that’s where I picked it up lately :)
Not sure if he adds the “now” part always, but I’m pretty sure he says “wait for it….” before his punch lines.

  103. #103 pasteycakes says:

    i haven’t seen that, so nope =[.
i’m feeling like its from the patriot maybe? before him and his two sons ambush the british in the woods.
but i’m not even sure if he says that or not.

  104. #104 chris holland says:

dietcokehed: Yes! Barney totally does say that. One of my favorite lines is when he says “LEGENDARY”. Sometimes he’ll go:

“it will be LEGEN …. DARY”.

    I also like

“it will be LEGEN … … DAIRY”.

  105. #105 chris holland says:

argh in-between those ellipses there was supposed to be a wait for it for the first quote and an i hope you’re not lactose intolerant for the second quote.

  106. #106 bruford74 says:

The way I remember it: It was said 2 times by a male british accent….”wait 4 it, wait 4 it”
    Does anyone have a clue?

  107. #107 momsusan says:

I’m also looking for the origins of “wait for it… wait for it…” Thing is, I can clearly hear Bill Murray saying it. Caddyshack (as someone already suggested) or Groundhog Day (my favorite). Any takers? Murray’s voice might have brought on the “Ghostbusters” idea. This will probably drive me insane.

  108. #108 Christina says:

Wow…I’ve been using this quote for, like, ever and I’m SO glad I’m not the only one who can’t remember exactly where it’s from. I know I’ve heard Robin Williams in his stand-up, but I’m pretty sure that he was spoofing some actually serious movie. From then on, it became a joke. But I reeeeally think it was serious at first. I totally agree…I feel like someone is about to be attacked.

  109. #109 Beansy Neckface says:

I had a thought that it might be Gladiator. My brother posed this query to me last night and this chat basically follows my thought pattern except the Monty Python and Robin Williams things - I have never watched any of that garbage because it sucks. Someone mentioned Happy Gilmore and I think Verne Lundquist was the announcer. I will be watching this movie soon to see if that is the one I was thinking of.

  110. #110 Chris says:

I now realize that me and my friend will never solve what movie this came from. Based on everything above, I will let him know its just another drunken conversation that will go unsolved.

  111. #111 IvansBirthday says:

Let me point out the two different uses and we really want to hear the proper ones answered:

    1) Wait for it… wait for it… NOW
is the first and most obvious and if it’s from a movie it doesn’t really amount to much except that it was used to drop bird poop on someone or Homer waiting for aliens, Braveheart, StarWars, etc, etc. The usage is pretty common as Hold, Hold, or Wait, Wait, English accent, whatever. I’ve heard it too, but somehow this isn’t the issue…
    2) Legen…wait for it… dary!
Used like Barney in How I met your mother is the one that should really bug people, because although we agree it’s just a saying, it’s definitely caught on in the last 3-5 years or so and now it’s everywhere, almost to the point of annoyance.

I first heard it in 2000 while traveling in Australia, as follows (quoting the tourguide):

“Here in the mangrove there are three types of egrets. The Great Egret… the lesser egret… and wait for it… the Intermediate Egret”. It was clearly used as a point of suspense, as well as saying something that was funny and obvious (or ironically not obvious) like this one.

It’s THIS kind of usage everyone wants to know about. So if can’t be quoted from a movie in this way, then it was probably just cultural, like “my bad”.

  113. #113 Balmor says:

I’m in Germany and have had this line stuck in my head for years. Please god, make it stop! I think this isn’t even a line this is a premonition for something — the ‘NOW’ to come. Of course, it already is ‘now’. So what are we waiting for?
I have to go all philosophical on you guys, this is too supernatural. I have seriously lost sleep over this, guys and I need help. I might see a doctor.

For gods sake somebody just make a film with a macho male British actor who is on the verge of some onslaught and is holding back his crew by telling them to ‘wait for it.. wait for it..’ Then we can all just say it was from that film and shut up and go to sleep.

  115. #115 Ahi says:

This is so amazing, I really have nothing to add, I just had to be a part of this phenomenon. It’s great to see that by the 4th comment this blog entry had been totally hijacked and derailed onto this topic of how we just can’t quite remember where this is from. I have no clue which it is either. In four years, when I come across it, you can bet I’ll post it here. Though, I gotta say, Caddyshack sounded right to me, and I can totally hear the announcer from Happy Gilmore saying it my head, but of course, that’s without the “…Now” part that was tacked on by someone in the thread.

Great job everyone, this is one of the most ridiculous and hilarious threads ever!

  116. #116 Jackie says:

Its Richie Rich when the kids are going to throw the manuer bags at the guards…richie (i believe) says wait for it, wait for it….now over the walkie talkie and then the manuer is thrown and hits the guard. My friend and I have been struggling with this quote for a month now. Someone mentioned the richie rich thing on this blog and it hit a spot wit me and thats the movie I’ve been searching for!!!!!! Thank You Lord lol
