I'm very new to IPod, but I have downloaded a CD that I bought to my IPod. I would like to download the same CD to my wife's IPod, but her computer is currently being repaired so I want to know if I can do that from my computer to her IPod?

Shawn--great tutorial!

For those of you with the same problems... read!! Oh, and make sure that you change your settings on the Ipods to MANUALLY UPDATE!! That is the most important.

For XP Users, if its the first time... XP will configure the computer to use on the machine. This does not alter the IPOD, just lets the machine install drivers to communicate with the IPOD. Only when in Itunes will you screw up the content (or if you use your Ipod as a HD and view its contents in a browser window.)

For MAC/XP users like me... planning is essential... if you set you Ipod to be formatted as XP, don't go and change your libraries to MAC, this will reformat everything!!! If you want to save you Itunes to save to another HD like I do... you need to setup Itunes to read from that directory. (Oh, and every time that it gets updated, you will need to verify its settings to make sure that its still reading from the correct drive... if not, you will get all the exclamation marks.)

For all who ask about taking music off old Ipods... ok, this one is labor intensive... I only have about 3000+ songs and have had to do this a few times :( There is a program that can be bought for less than $20, called "tunes plus". It can be found in Office Max. (no affiliations!!) It will sincronize your Ipods contents to a PC without going into Itunes. It will also add address and contacts info if you have Outlook, and with some easy reading you can even have horrorscopes, and news updated also. This works to get music off your old Ipod and keep them incase of accidents. (You figure out the stuff about a friends Ipod. Hint) Remember that Itunes was made as to keep consumers BUYING!!! So music is not supposed to be shared with more than certain amounts of Ipods for each library.

About Libraries in Itunes.... please understand that MAC uses central databases to keep everything intact, and syincronized... so, you will only need to have ONE Library for everyone in the house. Creating Multiple users for a computer does work, just need to read on how to set that up. Also, if you want to make the playlists more multiple user friendly... #38- Shawns Tutorial does a very good job... even I hadn't thought of using the comments for that, and I have been using Ipods, since 2nd gen. If you want to add to your own playlist for your own Ipod, that needs to be mananged manually. Automatic updates are for single Ipod Owners to have no hassles with their libraries.

As for #95 Mikey--- Sorry to hear about ther misfortune... it happened to me also whole syncing my Ipod to my new laptop... after it was previoulsy connected to my desktop. XP remembers the equipment that was connected to it... so if you sync it to one PC, the next computer will know it!! Also, make sure that in Itunes, you configure it to save your music as MP3, and not AAC!!! This little issue is a life saver. Itunes automatically changes the names of all the files to a random letter soup... (browse into your ipods hidden files and you will see that you will not be able to find the music your looking for afterwards.) I do not know why the company has done this, but its their propietary thing to keep business... so if you lost your music, or are afraid of losing your music, before updating, or syncronizing, setup and plan!!! It works great, but you need to know the rules of the game.

--I have no affiliation with any company whatsoever... so I hope this hasa helped.

I have 2 exactly equal 8GB IPod Nano's, and want to sync the same library, mainly consisting of podcasts, to both the ipods. Does anyone have a clue how to do this? My pc first recognises the second ipod as new and starts installing drivers etc, but then says that it has been synced on an other pc, wich is true, because i already synced it once at home. The pc where these need managing is at work. So one ipod is synced properly, but itunes wont do the second one.... Any suggestions?

Thanx a lot in advance,

I had faith in Ipod and Itunes at one time. Until I used it. I can't believe people actually use that software. There's nothing like plugging in an already fully loaded Ipod with music you've been collecting for monthes thinking your friend can give you those songs you just heard on his computer. You all know what happens next. Oh I got those couple Mp3's but I where'd the other six thousand go? Thanks Itunes! You revolutionized the way I lose music! I haven't lost music this fast since I lost the whole Ipod. I hope apple got there consumer information off of it before the wiped my library. That software is the only software I am adamantly against. I'll start buying music off Itunes when they get me back that music. I hate to be completely negative with this post but I think that it is a horrible attempt at restructuring the way people store music when it's just a way of controlling piracy. I feel that music is a right. To own it. To listen to it. To copy it. To burn it. To steal it if need be. Maybe no one agrees with me but I don't like knowing that every MP3 you put on that music is linked to an Ipod which is linked to a consumer research company and turned into profits which as an Itunes user I never see benefits of. I'll never own the "Rights" to my music. It's music. Nothing more. It's no ones business what's on it, how often I use it, and what computer I plugged it into. All the off brand MP3 player's I've used seem to do the same job with Windows explorer. And I don't have to register them. I'll never forgive Apple for the music I lost on my Ipod. It's music I'll never replace. All in the pursuit of what? The right's of musicians? It's there music I lost and I'm sure I'm not the only one who have seen an Ipod update librarys. I'm not trying to change anyones opinion on what they think about apple or Itunes but with a company of such stature I expect much more. I know your all saying all you had to do was uncheck the box in the settings and I know that. Save your breath. I learned that lesson the hard way.

Hey Shawn,
Great detailed step by step tutorial. But, can you give one for NON-common music library. I would like to plug iPod A into the computer and let it sync for it's library and updates, etc.. I would like to plug in iPod B to do the same thing, but with it's own library.

Ok, so apparently you cannot have two ipods on a PC at the same time. I have two ipods, an older 20 gig and an early nano. I'll confess from the start that I don't know exactly how, but my PC was able to recognize both ipods (not simotaniously, but at separate times), and even more than that, I was able to load friend's ipods too and give them music/access and play their music on my computer (while connected). And all on the same user account, without managing anything.

I now have an MacBook Pro. I want to connect my second ipod, at a separate time, but it does not seem to be working properly. Itunes recognizes an ipod. BUT, not being the original one I connected, every song/every playlist is grayed out. I cannot highlight anything listed as being on this alt. ipod, let alone play anything or update it.

I have friends with MacBooks who have just taken my ipod, hooked it up, and given me music...Can anyone explain the troubles I'm having now that I have my own MacBook?

I got a question!! See I am borrowing my friends ipod. He is lending it to me for the summer. He has about 2gigs worth of stuff on it. Well, i want to know if it is possible to add my own songs on it from itunes on my computer?? When I plug it in i get this thing that tells me it can only be synced with one itunes thingy, and it gives me two options, either to erase the previous stuff on the ipod, or "transfer Purchases". What does the whole "transfer Purchases" mean and do?? Thats my question, please helpp!!

Hi all, this may be obvious, but if you are wanting to run two Ipods off of the one computer (PC), and have decided to take the option of setting up two separate user accounts and running two separate iTunes libraries.

I have an Ipod nano and my sister just got a shuffle we don't want the same music on our ipods and we only have one computer so we set up an itunes account for her and I already had one. When we got hers set up I looked in her library and she has all my music, how do I get my music out of her library without deleting all of my music in the process? And if I set up two playlists one for each of us will the music be deleted from either of our ipods even if we set it to manual??

FOR ANYONE WITH 2 IPODS NOT WANTING THE SAME MUSIC: A possible solution is to have both ipods music in the itunes library then create two seperate playlists with the different music and go to preferences in itunes and set up the playlists as the syncing folder for the respective ipod. ask questions for help, i havent done this yes but plan to in the future as my bro has his 40gig ipod and i am getting my new ipod touch and am looking in advance to make sure it is possible to deal with 2 ipods on one itunes. it should be too hard.

Hi all, this may be obvious, but if you are wanting to run two Ipods off of the one computer (PC), and have decided to take the option of setting up two separate user accounts and running two separate iTunes libraries, do you need to download iTunes twice? Will this wipe my brother's existing account (which has been on my computer for over a year and is therefore quite large)?

I have two iPod accounts in my iTunes folder. How do I delete songs back out?

I'm really hoping someone has a better solution than to put all of my 1700-something songs (AND videos) into a stupid playlist.

My problem is I have a 4g, but the library that I have on it is on a old computer that doesn't work any more. Now I have a new computer, a 30g, and a new library. I want to get the old songs off my 4g and transfer it to my new computer, but it keeps saying that it wants to erase my old playlist and put the new library onto my 4g. I don't want to do that because they are different song that I don't have any more. Can somebody please help me? I would appreciate it.

I just did this whole two ipods, one computer thing. I had to create a second user account. I then went into the file where my itunes info was stored, copied it and placed it in a shared music file. Once i went into the new user account, i opened itunes and found the file and imported into the new user account itunes. Once it was all in the library, I plugged in the ipod and sync'd with that itunes. Went back to my original user account and made sure nothing affected my first ipod...all was good. Plus, any itunes store purchased items went with the files and thus were placed in the second ipod. Hope this helps....

Ok- I've read all the comments and they seem really helpful... but I have a question before I go messing with it all.

Like everyone else here- I have 2 ipods for one computer (windows).
