Overheard: 12 and 17 inch MacBook Pro’s Coming Soon
I was walking into the press room this morning, planning to get some work done, when I passed what looked like the ending of an Apple employee briefing. The Apple staff seemed to be migrating in the same direction as me, and this is what I over-heard:
Guy: “Have you heard anything about 12 and 17?”
Girl: “Right now we only have 15.4, but Steve said last night that we would be getting 12 and 17.”
I don’t know about you guys, but I take this to mean that we will soon be seeing 12 and 17 inch MacBook Pro machines.

This would be nice. I have a 12″ PowerBook that I love, mainly because of its small physical size. If a 12″ MacBook became available I’d seriously consider it, especially if it had higher resolution than the 12″ PB.
Dennis Bullock on January 11th, 2006 at 2:06 pm
I second that Don. I have a 12″ PowerBook and I am very happy with its size. I would be all over a 12″ MacBook.
Rich Trouton on January 11th, 2006 at 2:28 pm
I can confirm that 17″ MacBooks are on the way. I was placing an order today for a test machine and was asked “Do you want the 15″ or 17″ model?” I asked “Isn’t there only the 15″ model?” and was told “No, there’s also a 17″ option available, want that?” Since I had already told my CIO the price of the MacBook and he’d approved the purchase of that, I had to say no.
Andrew J. on January 11th, 2006 at 5:09 pm
If the 12″ is announced before the 15.4″ ships, I’ll cancel my order for the latter and go with the 12″. What do y’all think the chances of that are?
Jpeezay on January 12th, 2006 at 9:37 pm
12 would be very nice but will it have the graphics card option with 256mb VRAM?
Chris on January 12th, 2006 at 10:19 pm
As a film student, a loaded 17″ MacBook would be boffo!!

Only a foot? If they came up with a 13″ widescreen model than I’d upgrade in a blink. As it is, my 12-inch Powerbook works just fine both as a desktop and a mobile… but I wouldn’t mind the extra width for better DVD viewing on the go, though.
chris on January 17th, 2006 at 10:55 am
Where can i find good info on if there is going to be more macbook pro’s coming out shortly, I heard something about he 12 and 17 inch having new casings, I want to order the 15 inch but not before I know the day after I order it, new products are going to come out or the casing will be totally different…
Chris on January 17th, 2006 at 1:14 pm
I’m all over a 17″. I’m looking to stop buying PowerMacs, basically want to have a powerful mobile workstation that can handle 3D apps then have a number Minis or their intel equivalents as a render farm (Lightwave3D) as a long-term plan. The only difference I really care about between the 15″ and 17″ MacBooks is the screen size, and PLEASE, Apple, don’t lower the pixel count the way you did with the 15″!!! I want the full 1680×1050 pixel space that the current 17″ has!!!
Rolly on January 17th, 2006 at 8:54 pm
I am a publisher, and move around to several different offices, a 17″ for me would be just great! Hope this is true.

how ’bout a 20 inch MacBook?, maybe Quad cpu’s
Josh on January 22nd, 2006 at 2:00 pm
i have ordered my 15″, a 17″ would be great for my photo editing, but i don;t even wanna try and fathom it;s price, if the beefed macbook 15″ is 2500 the 17″ would be a close to or over 3000 for a laptop! that will be outdated in like 6 months tops!

i had my 17′ powerbook stolen last year. it was my one
chance to get ahead. i had a lot of creative stuff on it.
i’m hoping i can get a 5 grand loan from my bank so that i
can get a macbook pro 17″ and get started all over again
was a pc user until 2005. will NEVER go back to pcs except at school.

I already order a 15′ and waiting for a 13′ model for my wife. She prefers lighter weight laptop. Please Apple, make it available asap……
Jerry Vas on January 24th, 2006 at 2:05 am
Friend of mine whom is close to some Apple people emailed me to say that i should hold off cause by the end of the year there would be models with flash memory instead of a HD. If MB Pro really was the PB G4 replacement wouldn’t they be pushing it alot more. I remember when the PB G4 came out it was a masive release with a huge marketing push. I think there is something more to come this year and the MacBook Pro is just to keep us going, really it’s just a hybrid of a PowerBook and what’s too come, really an upgrade of the old not a complete new model.
ryan on January 28th, 2006 at 11:41 pm
come on apple. Bring back newton!!! lol or a tablet? maybe that is what the cult of mac article is forscribing? is that even a word?

I bought a 17″ G4 laptop 3 months ago and it has the sound stutter fault that seems to be a problem for around 1000 buyers.
I have spoke at lenght with Apple and they have agreed to give me a 15″ version of the new model as they said they don’t have a 17″
I have agreed and just need to wait until the new version is ready to ship.
This stutter problem on the sound is a real problem and they have no cure for it.

I HAVE THE POWERBOOK 12″ AND I LOVE IT BUT I WHANT TO UPGRADE FOR SOME THING NEW AND I WISH APPLE MAKE IT EVEN SMALLER THEN 12″ LIKE AN 8″ OR 10″ IT WILL BE EASIER TO TRAVEL LIKE ME, AND ALOT OTHERS. I DRIVE AVERYDAY AN I TAKE MY POWEBOOK WITH ME EVERY WARE I GO. AND WHEN I’M HOME I USE MY G5. IT’S JUST SOMETHING SMALLER TO CARRY.

What do you think the differences between a 17 inch and 15 inch maybe? Do you think that the processors will be the same? I am hoping that a 2ghz duo will also come out. I was due to order the 1.83 model this week but now i am not so sure and may hold of doing so a bit.
They are even making laptops now with 4g of ram as seen in the Toshiba M400 and soon the 2ghz that Apple are using is going to seem outdated. It is a shame that they couldn’t up the memory capacity to at least 4gig.
John on February 8th, 2006 at 9:19 pm
Does anyone have any idea of when Apple will be coming out with the 12′ Macbook Pro? Thanks
Kev on February 10th, 2006 at 4:13 pm
I’m switching to Mac as soon as the 17″ becomes available. Almost everyone I know in the industry is using Final Cut Pro, so I figure I better get on board. Can anyone tell me if there is good PC emulation software out there to run IIS possibly and when will Final Cut run on the Mac Book Pro?
Mcordas on February 14th, 2006 at 12:59 pm
Forget about IIS and go for Apache… Why run IIS on a brand new Mac Book Pro ?
And… welcome to FinalCut !
A happy first generation Powerbook 17 owner.

The only reason I haven’t gotten the 15″ is because I am hoping the 12″ would come out soon. I really cherish my 12″ PowerBook for it’s portability.
Even if they increase it by an inch, making a 13″ Macbook Pro would be great to support a better resolution. Keeping my fingers cross.

As luck would have it; as a recent convert from Winders to Apple, Applie is ramping up its Intel platform. I dearly want a 12″ MacBook Pro, but i doubt we’ll see it too soon as Apple will want to make the most of the still extremely popular 12″ PowerBook sales. I mean, why would Apple want to cannibalise a great selling product, right It’s only when Apple detects the general public at large (never mind the Mac buffs) is catching on to the Intel upgrade, and consequently 12″ PowerBook sales fall sharply in eager anticipatation, that they will roll out the 12″ MacBook. So I forecast we’ll be waiting until Christmas 2006. No better a time to roll it out as “Best Christmas Present of Christmas 2006″ contender, eh?!

This comes from another website:
ThinkSecret claims that Apple has begun manufacturing the new “MacBook” (Intel iBook) which should be available in the next 30-60 days.
According to the rumor site, the newest version of the iBook will indeed be rebranded as a “MacBook” and will come with a 13.3″ widescreen display with 1280×720 resolution.
The upcoming MacBook is said to share internal components with the recently released Mac mini which comes in both Core Solo and Core Duo configurations. The new MacBook will therefore replace both the current 12″ and 14″ iBooks as well as the 12″ PowerBook G4. This corroborates a similar report that new iBooks were in production to be delivered by June. The iBook was last updated in July 2005.

Surely there’ll be enough room for e.sata as well as fw800?
I’m alittle surprised Apple hasn’t made more of that one already-
DanielVDB on April 16th, 2006 at 8:50 pm
What about a 7 or 8″ Mini MacBook Pro with 16/9 ratio, Apple hasn’t touch that hot sector of the market. That’be sweet.
JP on April 17th, 2006 at 12:46 pm
I wish they would come out with a 20 inch Powerbook then I would never have to buy a PowerMac again.
PORTABLE DESKTOP. That is what I need.
What do you think?
David on April 17th, 2006 at 12:52 pm
I would dig a 8 -12 inch computer. Flying every week lugging around a 15 inch gets heavy I would hate to try a 20 inch.
Niall on April 18th, 2006 at 12:59 pm
Probably a 7″ or 8″ Mini MacBook Pro would already be getting too close to the business mobile phones like the Nokia Communicator, in which case people would simple buy the small form factor telecomms radio all in one, meaning the such a small MacBook Pro would lose out.
Reem on April 19th, 2006 at 6:45 am
I totally agree with Niall as a 7 or 8 inch will be too tiny and similar to the latest mobile phones! I believe that either 12″ or 13″ is the best size for a portable. yet provides clear visuals !

Dear Apple,
Pleeeeeeaaaaase release the 12 inch MacBook tomorrow, and please supply your Hong Kong store with stock as soon as any other store. I NEED ONE NOW, and I can’t wait any longer. I feel like a kid with these things, and Apple is the parent who tells me I have to wait a little while longer… a little longer… aaarrrgh. Damned marketing and economics and stock prices and analysts and timing and the perpetual need to ‘unveil.’ Give up the 12″ already.

The thing is that the iBook and the 12″ Powerbook are now getting long in the tooth both power and technology wise (although the 12″ Powerbook is still an icon for ultraportables in terms of looks).
The 15.4″ was the most logical size to start with as it met the widest market. The 17″ was likely to appeal to those who need the desktop space and don’t travel too much but want to be able to move locations from time to time.
I’ve got a 20″ iMac G5 and a Dell Inspiron (running Linux and Winduhhs for server admin work) and I’m soon to bid a sad farewell to both. I’ve been looking for a laptop to replace them with the following:
- 13-14″ widescreen (If I want bigger I’ll use an external screen when at home).
- Core Duo processor(s).
- not too thick thick and with an integrated DVD±RW (hardly anyone meets this one).
- not running the pathetic excuse for graphics that Intel produce (I’m a keen photographer and adore Photoshop like the brother I never had).
What has this sector utterly cornered? Sony. The pretenders to the throne (although the SZ model I refer to is actually pretty decent).
Come on Apple! Tap this market soon, please! Give us something that meets the need for portable, light, powerful enough to run things at a decent lick and with a battery life with a genuine 3 hours of real world use and you won’t be able to produce them fast enough!
Oh, and if you could please sell it for £1299 or less I’d be eternally grateful!
Jay on April 25th, 2006 at 10:56 am
What are the predictions on the 15.4 macbook pro being equipped with the double layer DVD superdrive and firewire 800 port that are on the 17 inch?
mark on April 25th, 2006 at 12:13 pm
dusty admin -
look at the Vaio SZ series. Seems to be what you’re looking for.
Dusty Admin on April 25th, 2006 at 2:10 pm
Jay – I think you’ll find Apple will keep the Firewire 800 for the 17″ only (at least to start with) but the DVD±RW DLs will appear on all of them as an option . This’d be in keeping with the lines the G5 Powermacs took.
Mark – T’would be my first – if, sadly, my only – choice but there’s a few things I don’t like about the Sony.
- It’s not an Apple and therefore not running OS X (let’s face it, pound for pound, it’s the best OS out there. More polished than Linux and BSD and infinitely better than Winduhhs in almost every respect).
- Sony parts make you wanna cry when compared the build quality of an Apple.
- Sony include a load of lite versions of software (that bumps up the price) that I don’t need or want without any option to remove it from the package before buying. If I was willing to sacrifice for a Wintel platform – and could live with integrated graphics – then I’d go for a Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad albeit with a 12″ screen.
Sure, I already have the software I use (Adobe CS2, Dreamweaver, and X-Plane for some fun) in both Mac and Winduhhs formats (thank you govt spending power!) but I’m in love with the inherent security and stability of OS X rather than have yet another security suite sucking up my battery life and processor time. Yes, I’ve had problems in the past with some of the runnings of Firefox (I’m an open-source supporter) on the Mac platform but for when I don’t use that then I use Safari.
The only real temptations with a PC platform are chatting with some friends who refuse to use anything but Messenger rather than my preferred Yahoo! (unless Microshite see the light and start integrating webcams for use with the Mac version) and Linux support for machines with a BIOS are much more common but then I can build a cheap PC for these reasons in about thirty minutes so why worry about it?
If Apple decide to have the 15.4″ as the smallest model then, considering it’s my hard-earned funding it rather than government expense this time around, I’d spring for that one over a Wintel machine any day of the week.

My 867 MHz G4 12” is getting old. I use it 15 hours a day, at home (with a 19” inch display and wireless mouse and keyboard) and whent traveling. it’s the only Mac you can use in the french “TGV” trains and on board of all planes, even when the person in front of you is sleeping and leaning it’s seat backward. But it’s getting old. My 12″ fell three times on the ground: the CD/DVD drive is not working anymore and I have to use sticking paper to close it. So indeed, it would be urgent to have the new 12″ Mac Book Pro !

Oh, I was so hopeful and now I feel so very hollow.
Would it really have killed them to have put a Radeon or GeForce chip in it instead of the dire waste of silicon that is Intel [un]Extreme Graphics? Fine, if it’s a smaller screen then it’s unlikely that you’ll be using huge amounts of 3D performance on a regular basis but, come on, event the iBook and Powerbook G4 12s had better chips than that!
Other than this minor gripe, the whole affair looks like another commendable effort from the folks at Infinity Loop. Even the price is more than reasonable considering the specification but I still hope they alter the graphics processing in Rev B… and that it’s not too far away. I’d quite happily pay another £100 for, say, a Radeon X1400 in there.
How about putting one of these in the uber-cool black one, Steve? Or make it an option? Please?
martingale on May 17th, 2006 at 12:09 pm
the 13 inch okay for low price, but I would strongly prefer a 13 inch macbook pro with better graphic card, and with a smaller frame around the screen…

The Macbook pro 17″ is missing important features to make it a PRO laptop: at least 1920 x 1200 native LCD res., hd-dvd drive, a full size pcm-cia slot, expresscard/54 slot, a real scrolling two button mouse. Apple has always been on the cutting edge of technology I wonder what happened with this release. High Definition is here to stay and it’s time for Apple to get on board!!!
Rajiv on May 26th, 2006 at 4:54 am
Do you think there will be a MacBook Pro 13.3″ or is it the black one which is the PB 12″ replacement ?
Dusty Admin on May 26th, 2006 at 6:56 am
I think if Apple is going to release a Pro Version of the 13.3″MacBook it’s going to be a while before we see it. I can’t see them spoiling the launch of the MacBook with an immediate follow-on of a pro model in that size and more’s the pity (as far as my desires go at any rate).
But then, if they’d put a proper graphics chip in the MacBook – with or without the default metallic casing – there’d be little reason to put out a MacBook anyway… would there?

Niall on May 27th, 2006 at 2:18 pm
I still stand by my earlier assertion that a 12″ Macbook Pro will NOT be released until at least just before Christmas 2006. It is all a rather clever ploy by Steve Jobs to release the plastic-cased 13″ Macbooks at a teaser-taster no long after whetting the appetities by releasing the 17″ Macbook Pro. As amply proven in this forum, it whets the appetite for a 12″ Macbook Pro, doesn’t it?! This is precisely how Apple wants to titilate all those waiting for a 12″ Macbook, right up to the Christmas wish list and a Christmas windfall for Apple. Let’s see in half a year if I am right!
Kyle on May 27th, 2006 at 3:46 pm
i’m w/Niall . . . . i get the apple e-news e-mail and the headline of the latest edition was: “Meet the Family. Now Complete” and underneath the headline was a pic of the MacBook White, the MacBook Black, the MacBook Pro 15″, and the MacBook Pro 17″
“Now Complete”
i think that sums it up. . . . so sad : – (
Eustice on May 27th, 2006 at 7:34 pm
I think Niall is saying there will be an MBP 12″ but we’ll have to wait till the holidays. Kyle, you are saying you believe that the 12″ MBP isn’t soming at all based on apple media campaigns. I guess the question is has an apple media campaign ever been wrong/false before?
I am sure that something smaller than the 15″ MBP is coming out. That would render the campaign false unless you don’t consider it part of the family. But I fear that it will be the 13.3″ MB size which is too big if you ask me. I just want the #$%^ 12″ PB size laptop just like the one I have, but with MBP speed.
I hope Niall is correct that a 12″ shows up at holiday time. Too bad we have to wait and apple receives no money in the meantime, so no interest or re-investment of that money so apple loses money in the end.
I agree with Dusty that there’s little chance of apple putting out a 12″ MBP so soon after the MB that it might steal sales from it.
Kyle on May 27th, 2006 at 9:59 pm
Eustice, that’s NOT what i meant, i was just telling every1 that reads this . . . you know what, go suck a Çø©k ; – )

Spiral on May 28th, 2006 at 7:18 am
I was going to an apple store yesterday, I was thinking of giving up my 12 inch, but not after I see this new plastic box. Very good screen quality, I am sure a fantastic computer. But if you have a PowerBook it would be like upgrading part of your machine and heavily downgrading the design. Apple is also about design. The Mac Book is fantastic for people that want a low price good computer. But I am afraid it is not enough to get many 12-inch power book fans to trade in.
Also the plastic frame around the screen is very wide. If you are on a low budget it is a wonder machine, if you are an old apple fan that expect the best and don’t care so much about price then you expect Steve to speed up by delivering a 12 inch PBP…
MacBook is a fantastic replacment for the old ibook users. But to make the line complete Apple really need to speed up and get out with a small macbook Pro. They have all the components, just put them together….
Eustice on May 28th, 2006 at 9:19 am
Oops, sorry Kyle, I thought that’s what you were saying, guess I thought wrong. Sorry you got so frustrated you couldn’t finish your sentence and opted for profanity intead.
I agree with Spiral, that’s exactly what it felt like seeing both MB, like a giant downgrade.

Ok, Steve
Now I got a problem with you.
All french peaple are waiting to you.
WE NEED IT, THE ONLY ONE, THE BEST, THE MacBook Pro 12
Don”t forget me, please, and don”t wait Xmas.
My iBook G4 is very tired now, he’s old , and he want to take his retirement : no longer battery.
Your Job is easy: One more month and the frenchy who I am ‘ll come in Florida for business, so I got Two possibilities : come with fujitsu Siemens Amilo 12″ or your MacBook Pro 12.
Think it , and take the good choice, I know you know .
Thank’s in advance.
Take care
and sorry for my english.
A french who, you’re very much in my thoughts

17″ Mac Book Pro is a boat, like a Lincoln or Pontiac for grandpas.
15″ Mac Book Pro looks like it should be a 17″, look at all that wasted space on both sides of the keyboard.
13.3″ Mac Book is a cheap toy.
12″ aluminum professional quality Intel Inside Macintosh laptop…MIA.
Steve on June 5th, 2006 at 1:54 pm
Am I missing something? Shouldn’t a “professional” laptop have a version made for “professionals” who are on the go? After much deliberation, I had decided to make the switch to apple from PC when the 12-inch macbook pro comes out, but I am starting to lose patience and am getting very close to just sticking with the PC.
Axel on June 7th, 2006 at 11:35 pm
It is AMAZING how everyone’s waiting for the MBP 12″ to come out, lol , i thought I was just one of a few … PATIENCE people, we all know the MBP 12” will be released right before xmas, so we have 5 months to save our money cause one thing for sure is, since everyone’s waiting for it, it is going to cost 2300 and up… It’s going to be worth the price though.
Spiral on June 8th, 2006 at 6:13 pm
Why wait to December? the more frequent they upgrade the more frequent I buy, no upgrade, no buy….and not only that, but unhappy customers…
I think after this plastic box advertisement have been on for some time, then the 12 inch titanium be out, well I hope so…
they always need something new on their website….lets cross fingers for 12 inch, or will they launch some new ipods first…
12 inch only really ultra-portable work anywhere; even on a turist class flight seat…
The 12 inch titanium is also the most beautiful machine they ever made…but beauty is not enough that is why we need the new model NOW
Spiral on June 8th, 2006 at 6:20 pm
Or looks like december first, not good not good
“If you have any lingering doubt, the company just told me on the telephone that a 12-inch MacBook Pro ain’t gonna happen.”
Full story here:
http://yourtech.typepad.com/main/2006/05/its_official_no.html
but what dose it mean apple told me on the phone, was it a sales clerk, or who?
Akir on June 10th, 2006 at 9:05 am
It’s a comercial strategy, apple can’t say, “hey, don’t worry peaple macbook pro 12 ‘ll come in december”(for exemple), because if they do it, lot of peaple’ll wait december and these peaple don’t buy 15 or 17 macbook pro , or 13 macbook now. And the orders ‘ll going down.
EveryTime when I ask a seler in Paris apple store, they says no, “no macbook pro 17″ “no Ibook G4″….,and 1 month after, macbook pro 17 is release, or ibook G4 too. it’s everytime the same story.
(sorry about my french english. ;-) )
BSouther on June 16th, 2006 at 11:59 am
Oops, I thought this was the Apple Blog, but I’ve apparently stumbled onto rationalization.com. Does anyone here seriously believe that Apple or any other company that produces consumer and pro lines will target a pro model release for the Christmas retail shopping season?
Apple will market the 13″ consumer models to Christmas shoppers, just as they timed release of these models to target students and parents during the retail education shopping season. If all goes well, they’ll have a faster processor and an updated OS to entice Christmas shoppers.
Maybe a smaller Pro model will be produced, maybe not; but there’s no strategic reason to release it in early December.
Niall on June 17th, 2006 at 1:22 pm
If Apple does not introduce a 12″ Macbook Pro as a descendent of the G4, they will in effect be unofficially proclaiming that they are not interested in satisfying the demand of the many existing and potential Apple users who desire the 12″ model. For Apple it would be a potentially revenue-losing case of Not Listening To Your Customers, and I still like to think – for now – that listening to the customers is something Apple is still very good at doing. Which is why I think Apple will introduce a 12″ Macbook Pro, when the “probation” fine-tuning and teething period has been completed with the 15″ and 17″ models. Which is why I still *feel* the 12″ will be rolled out for Christmas 2006, or around then.
Chris on June 18th, 2006 at 3:13 pm
I too would love a 13-inch macbook pro, but help me with this. Why doesn’t Apple make a laptop where the screen display goes almost all the way to the edge? The edging around the display seems to be a waste of space and could easily pack a larger screen size, like a 13-inch or 12-inch screen in a smaller laptop. As things are now, the 13.3 inch Macbook is the same length as my Powerbook Pismo, only thinner and an inch less deep(front to screen). This seems like a no-brainer. Is it much more expensive to do this?
BSouther on June 19th, 2006 at 8:49 pm
Chris, that edging is called the bezel. It typically does more than just hold a display in place, as a window frame does for a glass pane. The bezel also generally is used to house components related to the display’s operations. If you consider that Apple’s designers and engineers have integrated an iSight camera into the MB and MBPro bezels, it’s really pretty impressive that they’re as narrow as they are now.
Rey on June 20th, 2006 at 1:25 am
I sent my 12 in to Daystar for an upgrade. I really liked the size of it and was looking forward to the new 7200 rpm HD and 1.4mhz CPU. When it was shipped back FedEx left it on my doorstep in the middle of Seattle and someone stole it of course. I left a note on my door for them not to leave it too. I don’t want a 15in Macbook Pro with no Firewire 800. And I really don’t think the MacBook is a a good replacement for my 12in. I need something to take back and forth to work. I had the 12 upgraded so I could hold ooff a couple years till Apple got their act together. I know they will come out with a slick subnotebook sooner or later.
Niall on June 20th, 2006 at 12:34 pm
Spiral, re “…and apple is the merzedes of computers, if your built your company on selling Mercedes then do not suddenly try to compete with honda civic”, well,
the JD Power Customer Satisfaction Index for 2005 puts Lexus no.1 and Mercedes no.21. Toyota is no.4 and BMW no.5. Even the “blue collar” Czech brand Skoda at no.2 beats the top German marques. So are you still sure Apple is the Mercedes of computers?
spiral on June 20th, 2006 at 1:46 pm
High end users often less satisfied that’s why they change frequent no matter cost…they always want the best…Merzedes users are not going for Skoda even if Skoda users are happy with Skoda…same with high end apple pro users, even if I not are happy with my 12 inch G4 I am not going for MacBook……
but I am sure apple is working on smaller mac book pro…. I just spent some money upgrading my 12 inch so I survive 6 more months (I hope) I use my computer 15 hours a day so it tends to crash at some point, some components simply get’s burned out…so plenty of bankup is must…
Spotjack on June 20th, 2006 at 7:20 pm
It’s too bad those companies that produce upgrades can’t produce an intel upgrade for the powerbook g4 that we just swap out the motherboard with.
Spotjack on June 25th, 2006 at 11:45 am
Or if that isn’t an option, there’s always this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834220021&ATT=34-220-021&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r
coupled with this natively run option:

Unfortuneately, this 12″ is ugly.

can i suggest the sony vaio sz2
perfect for those who want a 12 inch mbp but without the problems
Niall on July 14th, 2006 at 12:38 am
I must say the Sony Vaio SZ2 does look very snazzy. I’d certainly go and have a look at it. With carbon-fiber jacket, drop-shock protection, standard 1Gb memory, it’s a neat package and the price doesn’t look too bad either.
I’m wary of first editions of any new technology, Apple included, there’s always teething problems and lack of new SW for the Intel Apples.
I think I’ll go for that Sony after all.
John on July 14th, 2006 at 7:34 am
Are you going to run OSX on the Vaio? If so, please post how it goes.
hipersons on July 19th, 2006 at 3:48 pm
the apple store now has a graphic on the top, showing all 4 of the new laptops with the headline “Meet the family, now complete.”
Sigh, i think our 12 inch prayers will not be answered.
Sarah P on July 19th, 2006 at 7:08 pm
The family now complete is old news. Whatever the slogan will be, I think it’s guaranteed that a new laptop will find it’s way into the collection. Unfortunetly, it may be razor thin and as a result have compramizes such as no dvd burner or have a really slow micro drive for a HD.
A Mac Book Pro 12″ would be a far better option.
Sean Straus on August 2nd, 2006 at 8:19 am
I’m still holding out for a 12 or 13 inch “pro” model. I don’t like the macbook 13″, it’s too heavy and bulky. I want a super lightweight small model like sony has. Apple better get it out because I’m not buying an apple otherwise.
Justin on August 10th, 2006 at 11:42 pm
Do you think a 12 inch model may be released at the same time Apple upgrade’s it’s Intel chips to the new Core 2 Duo? Would make sense.
I wouldn’t mind if the baby model went even smaller, something like the Sony TX27.. which is 11.1 inch but still boasts 1366×768 resolution. More info here: http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/hardware/notebooks/soa/Sony_VAIO_VGN_TX27GP/0,39023407,39260750,00.htm
Either way.. HURRY UP APPLE! :)
Abraham on August 20th, 2006 at 4:10 pm
I have to say that I waited for a 12″ MBP just before they anounce the change to Intel base procesors.
I wanted to buy a Power Book but then I saw about the new MacBook, so I waited to see what happened later, I worked this summer and I got some cash, but unfortunatelly no 12 or 13 inches MBP.
Seriously, I have grown with Apple since a child, I wanted to buy a lap for university ’cause I need it hurry, so I have to bought a PC, if you want to know, a Packard Bell Easynote V7900, who by the way, I named “Packita Vader”, it’s Black you know.
Hope in the future to see a 12″ MBP to travel with and keep my PC just for some small reasons.
rcs on August 24th, 2006 at 6:05 pm
Show me a 12″ MBPro with an ExpressCard/34 slot, and I’ll cut the check right now. But, no wireless broadband capability? Then no deal. WiFi might work for station-to-station-type road warriors, but it’s schite to me.
I like my current daily-use 15″ PB just fine, but I frequentlly look longingly at my older (but still kick-@$$) 12″ PB, relegated to being a stay-at-home iTunes media box merely because it lacked a PC Card slot. *sad* My main issue with the 15″ PB is that it doesn’t fit in the saddlebags of my Fattie, which was why I had opted for the 12″ PB in the first place. But a boy needs his EVDO, so that’s that.
I hope that Apple is learning a trick or two about squeezing electronics into small form factors from Sony. Back in pre-OSX days, I had a Sony Vaio PCG-SR17 that was hardware-feature-2-size the best computer I ever owned. 10.4″, 3.5 lbs and still had room for PC Card and Memory Stick slots. That Vaio was so small, I’d haul it places I’d never think to take the 15″ PB. Hah! So, size *does* matter!
Listen up Stevie-J. “Small form factor” does not have to mean “low-end”. There is a segment of the road-warrior population that’d pay more $$$ for a 12″ (or smaller) MBPro than for a 15″ with the exact same config (excepting screen size, of course).

Normally I am fast at upgrading, but I am still holding onto my powerbook 12 inch. Yes it is getting slow compared to new models, but I will probably hang in with it until Jan/Feb 2007.
I find it a bit shameful apple not has given us a portable and professional alternative…
I still hope for a 12 inch, a tiny 10 inch would be too small, the 13 inch macbook is not a good alternative either. The 12 inch was perfect, basically a good size key board with a good screen.
I had 15 inch before, too big if you are a jet setter

I’m an Network Engineer at a small IT Consulting firm. We are considering moving to Mac’s now that they can boot Windows and OS X natively.
We need the specs of the MacBook Pro, however, the consultants don’t want travel with a 15″ machine. When a 12″ or 13″ Pro becomes available, Macintosh will officially have our business that has been PC and Windows since inception.
