I think in the broad scheme of things having a MacBook that came in a half dozen colors would complicate things quite a bit. Not to mention more production costs, etc. Apple's simplicity is one of it's strong suites. Of course the colors of metal, black and white are very cool and stylish for hardware. Can you imagine a MacPro in iPod Nano Pink - I have a black MacBook and personally I love it much more than the white ones. As someone much wiser than me said KISS -"Keep it simple stupid."

The ColorWare thing is pretty cool indeed but $650 is a steep premium. For both iMac or MacBook Pro, and no they don't include any RAM/hard drive/etc upgrades, I checked.

Maybe if there were patterns, or I if one could send an arbitrary image file. But that seems steep for color. Worth it for some, though, I'm sure.

Although the iMac was eventually left in the dust power-wise by its X86 competitors, at the time of its intro in 1998 the 233 MHz G3 was most assuredly NOT "somewhat underpowered".

Having said that, I'm getting a little tired of white too and I think my aluminum PB will probably get swapped for a black MacBook soon.

If you want a Macintosh in a color other than white or black - in one of multiple possible colors - then simply purchase your Mac from ColorwarePC.com. They custom paint Macs to whatever color you desire from their selection. You can even get Mac with logos of your choice.

I would prefer a charcoal gray or even a (product) red version. Or aleast offer the iMacs in the colors that the iPods are offered in. Just IMO. Variety is the spice of life after all.

I disagree with Galley. In fact, I can't get enough of white Apple products. There are so many peripherals that seem completely out of place with a Mac. I was so annoyed I decided to spray paint my external hard drive to make it match with my iMac. The pictures are on my blog. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. Only thing is, not everything can be spray painted.

I miss the candy-colored iMacs and the G3/G4 towers: they were warm to the eyes. Current whites and silvers are somewhat tense, truly Kubrickian.

White electronics are the coolest! Just this morning I ordered a white Western Digital My Book Pro hard drive to go along with my white MacBook, my white Apple universal dock and white JBL On Stage speaker system. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't offer white nanos anymore, so my nano is blue. I even have a white Sony clock radio.

I'm with you on this one Louis. I was watching a DVD of the British series Absolutely Fabulous just last night and the dalmation iMac popped up, I had forgotten about it completely. It is so striking it is iconic.

The trouble is that fashions change so quickly, I think there is likely a huge logistics issue for Apple as you mentioned. Particularly with patterns, but with colors too. Perhaps it could be an option available only through the online store, with a delay on the order.

More likely is that Apple will eventually come up with a way of 'skinning' a Mac electronically, so that it can softly glow in a particular color or pattern, on demand. Now that would be cool.

Like the other James, I completely disagree.
1. Not all apple products only come in white. Buy a black, or alum, one or a colored nano g2.
2. The white ipod ear buds were not only a welcome change to the ubiquitous black headphones, but a key strategic element in creating a recognizable aesthetic in differentiating their product vs. everyone else.

You must be reading my mind. I'd love to see a black option across the board.

OTOH, the "Dalmatian" and "Flower Power" iMacs were the ugliest things Apple's ever done. Hideous.
