New Apple device to be computer/phone hybrid?

Written on January 08, 2007 by Eddie Hargreaves and 8 people have commented

According to an article in the International Herald-Tribune by John Markoff, Apple “has developed the first of the next generation of devices that are closer to personal computers in pocket form, meaning that they will easily handle music, entertainment, productivity tasks and communications on cellular and other wireless networks.”

According to the article, Steve Jobs is expected to unveil the device at Tuesday’s much-anticipated Macworld Expo keynote and it “may include Jobs-inspired refinements like a sleek ceramic case and a transparent touch screen.”

Markoff’s got some choice quotes, including this one by Paul Mercer, a software designer and president of Iventor, a designer of software for hand-helds based in Palo Alto, California:

Apple is about to touch off a nuclear war. The Nokias and the Motorolas will have to respond.

Citing two associates who asked not to be identified to avoid damaging their relationship with Jobs, Steve “was more excited about his current project than he was about the Macintosh.”

That’s one reason why I don’t think we will see the touchscreen video iPod. It will be a completely different device, like a Mac handheld.

Do you guys remember this graphic of the Apple product arc:

It’s clear there is a major gap in transportable computing for Apple. The cell phone idea would be nice, sure. I’d be happy to get one. But it would need to be more than a cellular extension of the iPod for me to think about it.

I dunno about Apple going into this UMPC market. Look at the raging success of Oragami and Oqo…wait…there isn’t any…
Who knows, maybe they could enter and define what people are looking for just like they did with the iPod.
