I think it was a nice move for apple to come out with the apple iPhone. The iPhone has most features consumers have been waiting to have. I also think the price will not deter people from buying the Apple iPhone. I even think they will sell more then the 10 million Apple iPhones they expect to sell within the next year.

It was exciting to see the new iPhone. It looks like Apple's really put a lot of thought and design into it (no surprise).

After thinking on it a little while though, I must say I was underwhelmed. I am currently a Treo 650 user and this is my 3rd Palm-based smartphone (the others being a Treo 270 and a Kyocera 6035). I use the calendar quite heavily, and set alarms for appointments, etc. Steve mentions that the iPhone has a calendar, but that's all he says about it.

I've also recently started using my Treo as an iPod (1Gb SD memory card with MP3s), and even a video iPod (with the TCPMP application), streaming the sound to my bluetooth wireless headphones! Wish I could get wifi on it though. Doh!

Battery life is 5 hours for "Talk/Video/Browsing" and 16 hours for "Audio playback." Now that says to me that it gets 5 hours of talk time, or 5 hours of video, or 5 hours of browsing, or 5 hours with some combination thereof. I also read that as "16 hours of continuous audio playback." There's nothing on Apple's iPhone site or anywhere else about the iPhone's standby time, which is what I'm really interested in. My Samsung A900 from Sprint only gets about 3 hours of talk time, and maybe 30 hours of standby time (by standyby I mean the phone is on and connected to the network but you're not sending or receiving any calls, messages, or using it other than maybe turning the display on to check the time or something).

"Up to 5 hours of talk time depends on network configuration. Up to 16 hours of battery life refers to music playback. Up to 5 hours of battery life is based on H.264 1.5-Mbps video at 640-by-480 resolution combined with 128-Kbps audio." -http://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/specs.html

Hmmm I still am kind of leery about the about the iPhone due to the fact that you have to see it to use it, no blind answering calls or whatnot, because it has no tactile feedback interface. As far as crappy phones its true the US has mainly crappy ones and about 20-30 models per carrier at a time, I spent 2 weeks in china and saw a zillion more models than are offered in the US, basically in Asia cellphones already do and have all the features of the iPhone but as far as I saw ( I could be wrong) none had the elegance of the actual user interface, so thats what I am excited about, now if I had the user interface, and unlocked phone, that I could put my own apps on, and it had say one or 2 buttons you could use when the touch screen is locked on the go to answer calls or something, that would be neat, but for now I'm looking into getting an unlocked Asian phone and getting a sim card based service here, which apparently lots of businessmen and military do as well when they travel to and from there.

You must be kidding about the battery life. It is only 5 hours on the iPhone. That is ridiculously low.

But yeah, I still think the iPhone is cool, Apple really knows how to make people excited about their products.

Kinda reminds me of this

"Democracy is the worst form of government except all of the others that have been tried before." -Winston Churchill

I don't have a RAZR either but my Samsung A900 is, well, crap as well. The iPhone looks like it does a lot of things better, but it also will do some things worse (namely battery life and durability), I'll have to wait until I have one in hand to play with.

"My guess is Rogers, as they use SIM cards like Cingular and they are bigger than the other SIM card users (I cant remember if that means they are CDMA or GSM). I use Bell, so I’ll have to pay them to end my service plan early."

As far as I know SIM = GSM for the most part. I've also heard that AT&T is partnering with Rogers in Canada so perhaps...

"Well because you’re a retard with a RAZR and tried only crap phones it doesn’t mean that all phones are crap." - Sebhelyesfarku

I don't have a RAZR but my Sony-Ericsson is crap. As were all the other cell phones I've ever owned or used. Crap, crap, and more crap.

I'd love to hear about this miracle phone that isn't crap, Sebhelyesfarku, if indeed you even know of one. I'm sure millions of other unhappy cell phone users would love to know this too.

Please share with us your infinite cell phone wisdom.

My guess is Rogers, as they use SIM cards like Cingular and they are bigger than the other SIM card users (I cant remember if that means they are CDMA or GSM). I use Bell, so I'll have to pay them to end my service plan early.

The fact that the UK is getting it in Q4 is promising...I assume we will get it then too.

"My current phone is amazingly popular and for the life of me I can’t figure out why.
Other phones I’ve used have had easy to use menu systems that were consistent and concise… but were ugly and had few features."

Well because you're a retard with a RAZR and tried only crap phones it doesn't mean that all phones are crap.

"Would be nice if they opened the phone to different providers, such as Verizon."

A lot of new phones are exclusive to a specific provider for a certain amount of time, and remember this thing isn't even out yet. Cingular's contract is until 2009 (from what I've read) and after that who knows what will happen?

I think we should define what we mean by "hit." I think by the end of next year Apple can hit 10 mil. handsets (is that worldwide or just US?), but I think the price is going to turn a lot of people away (the ones who forget that it has a Nano and a Nano with the most advanced iPod interface ever).

"I expect we’ll see the iPhone pop up in movies as the main characters phone-of-choice very soon just as Macs and iPods are in nearly every flick you see today."

2008 season of 24. Watch. Also if Sony didn't seem to own James Bond (count how many Vaio's are in that film, and a country club uses Blu-Ray in it's CCTV system) I could definitely see it in there too.

I'll wait and see what happens on this phone. My phone contract expired this past weekend, and I'll be getting a new phone, but with a one year contract this time.

I'll save my money and get a new Laptop sometime late summer...

The UI is the biggest determining factor for me. I have never felt that manufacturers or carriers placed much emphasis on the end user customization of their phone and it's appearance. Well, unless you count the Paris Hilton types, who add jewels and pink faceplate's.

Many phones are too restricted with the interface and the buttons. Why does left arrow have to be the shortcut for a new text message? Why does pressing up launch the Verizon Mobile Web, if I don't have that feature, why can't I remap it? Annoyance. Plain and simple.

Although I have had Verizon service for nearly 7 years, I would gladly switch carriers for this phone. I've never had a problem with Verizon ever, but the UI of the iPhone is too promising to pass up.

I will be looking at the iPhone closer to October when my contract expires.
