iTunes tops list of ‘Best Places for Free Music’

Britain’s Q magazine, “the essential music guide,” ran a story in the March 2007 issue titled “100 Best Places to get Free Music,” and listed as No. 1 in the New & Exclusive Tracks group is Apple’s iTunes.

iTunes has maintained its pole position through innovation - think celebrity playlists and the recent addition of genre-driven iMix playlists. Every Tuesday Apple also releases a Single of the Week and a Discovery Download, available free for seven days. Recent examples include tracks by Plan B, James Taylor and Boy Kill Boy

The iTunes Store differs from one country to another, so free downloads in the UK generally differ from those in America. If you want to see what they are, simply scroll to the bottom of the store’s home and choose from the pop-up menu or click on the flag button to see a visual table of all the available stores.

The remaining nine sites in the New & Exclusive Tracks category are:

  1. Purevolume
  2. Soundclick
  3. Dilate Choonz
  4. Arjan Writes
  5. Spinner
  6. MySpace
  7. Limewire
  8. Download.com
  9. MP3.com

iTunes is my #1 source for new music, there’s no doubt.

With my focus on trance/electronic/techno, etc., I’ve found a lot of independent artists haven’t yet made iTunes, and have opted to go a different way with their music. Sometimes, that way is the free Web distribution route.

A great starting point is here: http://pomac.netswarm.net/music.html/music

DJ Irish and DJ Nyman offer up days and days of great music mixes.

The free iTunes stuff is great, but the selection rather limited.

Conspicuously absent from the list given is Napster, which offers several free tracks on Fridays. I find the selection much better than the iTunes freebies, w/o the DRM. MacDevCenter posts ‘em every week. I’d bet that if the authors took a look at what’s on Napster, they’d put it near the top of the list.

(Disclaimer: No I don’t work for or own stock in Napster.)

    But are they still DRM-wrapped?
