Conspicuously absent from the list given is Napster, which offers several free tracks on Fridays. I find the selection much better than the iTunes freebies, w/o the DRM. MacDevCenter posts 'em every week. I'd bet that if the authors took a look at what's on Napster, they'd put it near the top of the list. (Disclaimer: No I don't work for or own stock in Napster.) With my focus on trance/electronic/techno, etc., I've found a lot of independent artists haven't yet made iTunes, and have opted to go a different way with their music. Sometimes, that way is the free Web distribution route.
