256Kbps tracks for $1.29. Albums the same price. Already purchased tracks can be upgraded for $0.30 each. No lossless, though.

Well, seems the WSJ agrees with you:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/01/why-jobs-is-going-to-london-emi-is-ditching-drm/

Though your premise that this is 'too big' of an event for just a Beatles-release, though... Meh. The media invites was issued just a day before the event, and Apple has been dead silent about it (and not just to be coy and stirr up rumors).

I'd say they are trying to say "don't expect too much". I think they learned from the "Showtime"-disappointment of yesteryear...

DRM-removal? Maybe.

Beatles? 50/50.

iPhone-downloads at .99? Probably not. (That'd come at an Apple-event...)

This is interesting. Not sure if it will be the beginning of no-DRM. I want to believe that Steve Jobs wants to eliminate DRM but I'm still not convinced.

Intriguing. If Apple offers EMI content on iTunes DRM-free, I wonder if Apple will make changes to iTunes in order to differentiate content that is DRMed from that which is not. Jobs is famous for not compromising on user experience.

It would be great if Apple and EMI take this step. I could see it causing an immediate ripple effect throughout the industry.

Gah! Now you got me all excited. If this happens I'll probably be a iTS customer at last. I will be really really disappointed tomorrow if there is only Beatles news tomorrow, Mr. Holmes!
