Apple TV Ad on TV

During an episode of “How I Met Your Mother” on CBS, I caught a commercial for the Apple TV. I had never seen it before (and it’s not on Apple’s site yet), so I thought I would report on it.

I’ll give you a play by play from what I remember:
The commercial starts out with a scene from “School of Rock” starring Jack Black. The camera pulls back and you see a person watching the movie on an iMac. “It’s on your computer.” The camera whizzes to the hallway where we see an iPod playing more of the movie. “It’s in your pocket.” The camera then moves to the living room with a television showing “School of Rock.” “Now it’s on your television.” You see the top of the Apple TV and we’re done.

That’s it — no huge or complicated explanations to how the device works. Simple and straight forward ad. Not a bad start.

The thing that was surprising was that the full screen video of the content playing on the Apple TV was in HD. If they were claiming that the same video was playing on the iPod that was playing on the Apple TV, the maximum resolution would have been 640 x 480.

Although the commercial was on point for those of us in the know, I think that it may only be a teaser for a more involved commercial that will elaborate on what it can do.

Just because the video was filling a 16×9 screen does not make it in HD.

I just saw the ad on ESPN HD. It certainly wasn’t the best ad I’ve ever seen.
