As said above, it is most likely just to revamp the rest of .Mac. Their webmail client is AJAX-based now, but they other parts of .Mac are sorely behind.

Of course, they could be adding cool things to their main site and store as well.

Yes, I can't imagine what they'd be doing with a Web 2.0 developer. It's not as if they have a package of web services that they sell for $99.95 at http://www.apple.com/dotmac/. It's a mystery.

Good! I always thought Apple, while doing software really, really well, is somewhat lacking with the transition to web 2.0-ish technology. .Mac is okay, and I hear the Mail funcationality is better, but overall it sounds like it could be improved upon. Some more social aspects to iTunes would be really interesting- discovering new music and the likes, but anything in that department is probably years down the line, to be honest.

In terms of the new posting on 37signals' job board... it looks slightly overblown. It looks more like the client-side cool factor of web 2.0, not necessarily anything server-side (and hence having anything very social-based, like Facebook on your iPhone, as you pointed out). My best bet is that they're simply looking for someone to bolster their regular web offerings- I mean, even their regular run-of-the-mill product pages are starting to get JavaScript flourishes here and there, so it's not too out of the ordinary, in my mind.
