NetNewsWire – Now free as a bird

Tip to Colin from The Uber Geeks for the news that NewsGator has now made 4 of it’s products free.
NetNewsWire, FeedDemon, NewsGator Inbox, and NewsGator Go! are all available for download now for free.
If you purchased any of those apps after December 9, 2007 you can get a full refund.
So why did they release all of these applications for free? As Nick and Greg put it, it’s simply a marketing a move to saturate the market more for their other for-pay services.
NetNewsWire has long been my favorite RSS reader and it’s great to see it being made available to even more users.
Oh, and if you didn’t notice, each of those apps also received an update!

This is fantastic. I’ve used NetNewsWire for years and I’ve never been able to switch to any other reader, because it’s that good!

I can’t imagine why I should use it, when there are so many much cooler clients like google reader or the new mindity (www.mindity.com)

Russel, it’s all about preference. I find most web-based readers to be unusable for how I like to group feeds and browse headlines and stories. NetNewsWire just fits my preferences really well. But I have plenty of friends like yourself that prefer using web apps like Google Reader. So whatever floats your boat.

Great stuff but a bit too late in the game. I’ve already gotten used to using Google Reader and it’s so handy because it’s accessible on all platforms and from anywhere as long as I have a net connection and a browser. Plus, I don’t have to worry about syncing between my home Mac and my work PC. And it’s free too. And with a clean interface. Thanks but no thanks.

Open-source Vienna does everything that NNW does, and uses less memory doing it. I won’t be swapping.

Does anyone know of how to identify which feeds are new or have been updated when viewing subscriptions. When I do a “refresh all”, it is difficult to know which subscriptions have been updated. Even after I do a resort by latest update, it is still difficult to determine which feeds have been updated. Suggestions?
