Articles like this made me believe that MacOS will be as useful as Linux was - and I bought a Mac. I am so much disappointed by the Mac support for open source applications. X apps on Mac are like X apps under Cygwin. Without MacPorts this would be a useless machine. I am fed up with Aqua - KDE is so much more convenient. I'll have to install now Linux on my Mac and after the kind of support for open source apps on MacOS I do not think I will ever buy another Mac.

@Kevin - re-tried it to make sure i'm not going crazy and it does.

@Joseph - not complaining about the /opt so much as I'm a tad disappointed there wasn't a KDE4 folder in /Applications with at least links to the apps (makes it more difficult for the average user to want to play with the new toys)

I'm told that KDE 4.1 is going to be *amazing*... 4 is plenty entertaining, so if it only gets better things are looking good for cross-platform development with decent look-and-feel (& functionality)

KDE's use of /opt is a very, very good thing. There's a reason for it: separation of preinstalled and extra system software. You don't want KDE in /usr

does this ⌘-Shift-G work in Leopard? I don't see anything happening, but it seems like it would come in handy for me.

@Adrian - I was elated when cut/paste worked seamlessly. We're going to see some really cool cross-platform apps in the next 9-15 months, I suspect.

complete sentences would be good...(can I use the fact that I'm commenting @ 0722?) - "before Mac & Windows users get to see what they've been missing."

@Soroush, Ranger Rick (and some others) gave a bit of info on the progress of Amarok http://www.racoonfink.com/archives/000754.html. I suspect it won't be long before Mac & Windows users. (Those new to KDE should take a look here - http://amarok.kde.org/ - for what we're talking about. You can think of Amarok as iTunes on steroids with a triple venti Americano tossed in for good measure.)

This is very interesting! Does that mean that Amarok can also be installed on Mac/Windows very soon?

I took the plunge yesterday too and was pleasantly surprised how quickly the nearly 2.5Gig dmg took to download. Took ages to verify and mount on my G4 though.

My overall impression was one of freakiness - I'm used to seeing KDE running under X11 (via fink or macports) on my mac or on my Debian box. Seeing the applications properly integrated into OSX was weird! But also fantastic, this is one of the more exciting developments for OSS on OSX for ages. Can't wait to see an OSX native Gtk now, so we can get integrated Gnome apps too!

My experience mirrors yours though - stability and documentation are both lacking currently. But on the whole this is an excellent first step for the project.
