I can't believe I've never thought of putting folder icons down there - having my download and other common folders there has made access that little bit quicker. Thanks for mentioning your 4th criteria.

I am highly-obsessive about my dock. If you create groups of applications (folders/stacks) and design your OWN icons, you'll be good to go.

I'm with Tice. I only keep the apps that I use as droplets to force open documents with that app. Everything else is just a quick Cmd+Space away.

I prefer to let "usefulness" be the deciding factor as to what goes in my dock. I could care less what the icon looks like.

Alas, there is a pretty good icon replacement for handbrake; it's a bit more relevant (yet rather obvious) than the developers original "Happy Hour" design. You can find it here:

http://samuraicoder.net/handbrake_replacement_icon

And I also forget, I'm an avid quicksilver'er as well.

I use MLB.TV Mosaic on a daily basis, but I don't keep it in the dock? Why? Because when the application is launched, another icon is spawned. Chalk it up to lousy programming.

I use Quicksilver too, like Eimantas, and since I started using it I never used my dock anymore for opening applications. I keep it hidden all the time.

The only thing I use it for is to access my downloads folder that sits in it!

Criteria:

As little as possible.

Ie. Finder and the trash. And I set the dock to hide. I find QS is far quicker for launching!

Just the stuff that I use on a daily or weekly basis. Don't really care about the icon, I just change it to my liking (hint, hint Handbrake!) Also, making Activity Monitor a real time CPU usage meter is a standard on all our Macs.

I've found that Spotlight is fast enough now that I don't need Quicksilver. Granted, there are some useful ancillary features in QS but for opening apps Spotlight is just fine.
