Free Custom iPhone Ringtones Using Only iTunes
Create free ringtones for your iPhone using only iTunes and songs you already have on your computer (This method only works with songs that are DRM free. To create ringtones using DRM protected songs please use this method). This method has been tested and works with iTunes 7.7.1 and iPhone 2.0.1 firmware.
To create custom ringtones using only iTunes:
- Right click on the song you are going to make into a ringer and select “Get Info.”
- Go to the options tab and go down to the “Start Time” and “Stop Time” check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to start/stop. The ringer has to be 30 seconds or less. Click OK when you’re done.
- Right click on your newly “clipped” song and select “Convert Selection to AAC.” The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times determined (If your menu item does not read “Convert Selection to AAC” and reads “Convert Slection to MP3″ (or some other format) please go to
iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Importingand change the “Import Using” drop down menu to “AAC Encoder”). - After the song is done encoding navigate to your iTunes Music folder, locate your song, and drag it to your desktop. After the song is on your desktop go back to iTunes and delete the clipped version from you iTunes library (It won’t delete it from your desktop, it will only remove it from iTunes).
- Go back the song on your desktop and right click on your song and chose “Get info.” Go to the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r (or you can just change the extension right from your desktop)
- After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add it to your iTunes library under the ringtones section. Sync your phone with iTunes and you’re done!

Remember to go back into iTunes and uncheck your custom start and stop times for the original version of your song.

This rocks. Thanks Jenny.
RaniLT – to change the extension on your desktop you will have to first configure Windows to show the file extention (it is hidden by default). To do this follow the instructions below:
1. Open My Computer
2. In the menu bar, choose Tools and then choose Folder Options
3. Click the View tab
4. Uncheck the box for “Hide extensions for known file types”
5. Click on “Apply to all folders”
6. Click OK to close window
Now you should see the file extension of every file. Simply right-click the file and choose rename to change the extension from m4a to m4r. Finally, follow the same instructions to hide the exetensions.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip! Worked for me on iPhone 3GS connecting to Mac OS X 10.4.11 running iTunes 8.2. Make sure you remember to “delete the clipped version from you iTunes library” as described in step 4; I neglected to do that that and was therefore unable to drag the file from my desktop into Ringtones until I deleted the clipped version of the song.

Everything worked, but when I go into my iphone to try and make my custom ringtone my general ringtone it is not under the sounds menu. The only way it works is if I go under contacts and add the custom ringtone for a specific contact. Anyone know how I can make my new custom ringtone an option in the sounds menu or how I can have it played as my general ring?

Right click from the desktop copy, select send to email recipient, but then from there I double clicked on it while it was in the email and selected save, then was able to change it to an m4r… then like it says double clicked and it went to my ringtone folder! awesome! thanks for sharing.

I was able to follow the step without problems until I synced the iphone, my custom ringtone didn’t show up in the custom section of the ringtones, only the puchased ringtones was there. Then I finally figured out that the original file that you are converting to aac (eventualy to m4r) must be over 30 seconds so you can chop it down. I had a 7 second mp3 file which I converted to a ringtone m4r, it didn’t show up on my phone. When I looped the 7 sec sound 10 times in wav editor and make the file 1m10s. I went back into itunes then checked the start and stop times to under 30 sec, converted to aac, then m4r and presto it worked!!! I finally got my ringtone that I want after 2 days of fustration.

Ana on December 9th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
It worked for me with some slight changes. I have the 3GS and the latest version of iTunes and a MacBook. You have to purchase the song in iTunes. Here are the changes:
1. In Step #2 – I set my ringtone to 20 seconds.
2. I did “Create Ringtone” instead of “Convert to AAC”. After it re-codes, the cut clipped appear in iTunes. So, there is no need to do any of the high-lighted portion in Step #3.
Voila!

I realized this method a few weeks ago and it has been great making ringtones in a matter of few minutes without paying extra bucks. So far, I haven’t hit any constraints in terms of how long the ringtone can be or how many can we store on iphone 3g… A very useful application indeed.!
Harold on August 7th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
I’m surprised someone hasn’t written a simple program to do all that work for you. Wonder how long before Apple shuts that concept down. I smell a new version of iTunes coming out………….

lok cheung on August 7th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
whenever you need the original file of any song in your iTunes, no need to locate it yourself in the itunes music folder. just drag the song from iTunes to the desktop, and the file will be copy to. the original file in the itunes music folder, nor the song in iTunes, will not be deleted or modified.

No.12 – What percentage of the apps in the Apps Store are free? :)
Nick Gorbikoff on August 8th, 2008 at 7:34 am
#16 Earl Hickey
How many of those free apps are made by Apple?
And don’t tell me about preloaded apps that come with Leopard or iPhone – you paid for them when you paid for your computer & operating system and or $200 & 2yr contract. Not saying it didn’t worth it – just saying as far as money making apple is worse than MS. At least MS provides lot’s of extra free tools through technet or it’s Express/Student programs.

Everything went as described up to getting the file on my desktop. However, when I did the right click on the file, there was no “Get Info” to click on in order to change the extension to m4a. I went into “properties” to attempt to change the extension was was told it was an invalid valid file and it would not change. What am I doing wrong? Please help. Thanks !!

Why go through all this hassle when you can use iPhoneRingToneMaker or iToner. Such they cost a few bucks, but they sure save you a lot of time doing these 6 steps over and over

If you do this, and the file doesn’t show up in your Ringtones folder, it’s because you didn’t delete the original file you made. Delete it, then try moving the m4r file in, and it should work.

“If you do this, and the file doesn’t show up in your Ringtones folder, it’s because you didn’t delete the original file you made. Delete it, then try moving the m4r file in, and it should work.”
I deleted the file from iTunes, then clicked on ringtones to open the ringtones playlist and dragged the file from the desktop into the ringtones folder and it worked for me. Yay!!

I am also doing the same thing – iphone3gs – itunes8.2. I converted the file that I downloaded from itunes themselves, copied it to my desktop and converted it to .m4r. Tryed to double click on the file and it went into my music folder in itunes (and yes i deleted the original .mp4 file), then i tried to drag and drop it into the ringtones fold and that is not an option. I have to be doing something wrong considering there are others that can do it……..help please
Rich Cassady on August 10th, 2008 at 9:06 am
the easiest way, (other than using Garage Band 4, which does it automatically, is just finding your ringtone folder and copying the file in there.
Rich Cassady on August 10th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Now that we have mastered Ringtones, does anyone have an idea how to change the text message alerts? There are only 6 on the phone. 5 suck, and I am tired of the 6th one. I was hoping to find an alternative to Jailbreak.
David Zetter on August 10th, 2008 at 10:46 am
I did everything that rich Cassady did, but I still cannot get the file to copy to the ringtone section of iTunes. What gives?
Rich Cassady on August 10th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Are you using Garage band? That is the easiest way, providing you have version 4. If not, to get the song back, find your ringtone folder, and copy the newly made ringtone into it.

Apple just announces a $30 million dollar profit right off the bat from their applications store. The least they could do is give you free ringtones. And it looks like the applications developers is where the new goldmine has been found.

I gave up since it did not work. I downloaded the iPhone RingToneMaker and used it for the trial (3 ringtones). It worked perfectly, so I paid $7.50 for the full version. This is a no brainer since the other way didn’t work. Just Google iPhone RingToneMaker. It is definitely worth $7.50.

Its a lot easier than you think, just right click on the file and change the extension from m4a. to m4r, then put it in your ringtone folder. Do a search for ringtone to find the folder.

I made 3 ringtones and synced phone but only see 2 on iphone even though I see all 3 in the ringtone folder on itunes. what am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help.
Michael on July 5th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
For those having trouble syncing (like I did). I found:
1. Unplugging the phone, having the files all ready then plugging it in to sync worked.
2. Another thing to try is un-sync the troubled folder (eg ringtones) then re-sync.
3. Combinations of the two above.
By the way does anyone know why the 0:30 second idea doesn’t seem to ’stick’ with my itunes. I’ve been having to use another sound program for cropping to 30s because when I import the m4r it changes back to its full length again. Even though I’m sure I’ve done everything right. Is there a setting to change that I’m not sure of?

You have to remove the time restraints you put on when making the ringtone.

Uncheck your custom start and stop times for the original version of your song.

For me at least i dont have to cut the track time down to 30 seconds, this way when you use a song for your alarm clock it will play the whole song…or most of it. As a ring tone it automatically only plays the first 30 seconds.
Thank you very much for this tip!

I am sure it will not, for starters, you can take them off at any time. if not, then your phone is trashed and they will never know. Not to mention the fact that Garage Band has a send to iPhone feature, so clearly Apple knows that people are sending tunes to their phones!

HOLY CRAP i got it to work with the new itunes 8 all you have to do is click on your phone name in the left tab…_____IPHONE and when the page changes go to the ringtone tab. once there click the sync ringtones check box. select all ringtones or just the ones you like i dont know if it will erase the ones you have already. mine did. but after that it should just send the new ringtones in your “ringtone” folder into your iphone. you still have to do all the converting to the .mr4 and the other steps but it will finally add them to your phone

For all you asking, how to change file extensions in vista…
Instead of going to my computer go to computer in the windows start menu. When there, just press the ALT key on the right of your keyboard. A hidden tab appears. There you just click tools. ETC…

These instructions are AMAZING!! I’ve just created three of my own ringtones from some of my favourite tracks. I’m a real novice user and didn’t get all this the first time, so here are some tips for those having problems:
1. Make sure your itunes folder is viewed as list i.e. view -> list. it changes from having the album artwork to the list of songs.
2. To enable the AAC coder to make ringtones you need to do some adjusting as outlined on these steps in itunes: Edit -> Preferences -> Import Settings -> Import Using -> AAC Encoder -> OK (close that box)
3. Right click on a song, get info and follow the rest of the steps… Once you’ve chosen the length of time you want the file doubles in itunes – so you can see two of the same song. The difference is the length of the song. Take the short song and put it on your desktop, then right click and rename the file to .m4r – it asks you to confirm, click Ok.
4. From there, just drag and drop it into the ringtones file on your library. When the iphone syncs the song will come arcoss.
5. I also had problems getting the ringtones folder to begin with – like some other users. I can’t remember how I overcame this. I think I downloaded some free ringtones from itunes and it appeared or something…
BIG thank you to all the other users on here who answered seemingly dumb questions – took me some fiddling but finally worked it out. Hopefuly this helps a little more.

WOO! There can’t be any symbols in the name of the ringtone. When I changed Octopus’s Garden to Octopus Garden, it appeared on the custom list on my iPhone. Thanks for that link to the other guide.

It didn’t work for me I did everything but when I put the mr4 file in itunes it just disappears. What are the exact steps after you change the file format and we are talking about the 3g right?
rockingh0rse on October 28th, 2008 at 10:13 am
Scott, its not .mr4 extension, its .m4r.
If this was just a typo on your part then did you remember to delete the short .aac version of your song before double-clicking on the .m4r file to add it back in to your itunes library?
Hannah on October 31st, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Mike on November 30th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
use audacity (on PC- not sure about MAC) and create your 30 second snippets. You have the ability to fade in and out, cut and paste, amplify, etc.- much more flexibility that in iTunes. Simply export as MP3 (requires lame_enc.dll), import to iTunes, create AAC version, locate that file on your system and rename as m4r instead of m4a (m4r is iPhone ringtone filetype). Save ringtone on your system and import to iTunes for sync with your device.

if the ringtones are not showing on your iphone, crop the length down. I cant get 0.29 secs to display on my iphone, but 20 secs and lower do it fine.

Mark-
I’d be sure that your naming conventions are specific and you’re very sure about which files you’re creating/saving.
Aside from that, not real sure what might be going on there; possibly something with the OS.
Cheers

Wow. I ignored a couple of friends and got the iphone. I use Linux because I like to own what I pay for. I moved from WIndows because I figured if they couldn’t make a secure OS, they could at least let people who pay for it have a little more control. Now that I own the iphone, I understand what true technoprison is! You have to be a special kind of control freak to prevent users from simply using ssh to deposit a ringtone. WTF is that? I am looking forward to when android gets ported, I will probably be a while. I have no idea why people are so down on Gates and MS about proprietary lockin. I have never run into a piece of software or hardware as crazy as apple. Iphone= my first and last apple product. I wonder if Jobs will require his eulogy to be loaded and played through itunes?
Iphon ringer on December 9th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
OK I have confirmed with I Tunes 8.0.2.20 it is possible to make a ringtone with ITunes only. The problem is the bits and pieces on how to do it is scattered on the web or posts so after hours of multiple forum research and since I beleive buying a song once is enough I will take the time to explain how I did this.
First, find the song you want in your I tunes library.
Secondly, format the file to ACC “AND MAKE SURE” when you set the time interval it is no longer than 29 seconds. This 29 seconds is what stopped me before consistently till I tried it and BAM, if you need instructions on how to make it 29 seconds and formatting it look here
http://www.intomobile.com/2008/10/07/iphone-ringtones-create-free-iphone-ringtones-using-itunes-8.html
once you have a 29 second m4a file change the extension to m4r, and import it to your ringtones and simply sync.
Another thing I did as someone suggested was shorten the song name “Not the file name” remember Itunes displays the name of the song from the “Get Info Tab” when you right click on a song. I called mine BBS for a short and easy name and it worked I maybe able to use longer names but I have not yet confirmed.
try this sorry if I am short of my explanation but as of Itunes 8.0.2.20 it is indeed possible to make ringtones so do not despair but the 29 second length seems of importance also and if you notice when you download working ringers from sites they are set at 29 seconds.

I had the same problem. This is what I did to correct the problem.
Make sure “Name” , “Artist”, “Album Artist” and “Album” are not blank.
..Open iTunes
..Click on “Ringtones” in the library
..Right Click on the ringtone that will not properly copy to your iPhone.
..Click “Get Info”
..Click on the “Info” tab
..Make sure you have entered something in “Name” , “Artist”, “Album Artist” and “Album”
..Now re-sync ringtones to your iPhone

I had the same problem a couple people complained about, where I followed all the instructions, looked great in iTunes, enabled syncing of ringtones, but the ringtone was not available on my iPhone. You need to also change the name of your ringtone so that it’s not the same name as the song you copied from. Make sure the song name of the ringtone is totally unique in your library. Once I did that, it worked.

gp on December 27th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Thanks much! This still works as of 12/27/08…apple will block as much as it can via patches, etc. but this relies on basic file-management tools in the OS so it should be good to go for the duration.

Is there a limit to how many “custom ringtones” itunes allow?
Ive created about 9 ringtones, but my iphone only will recognize 8 of the 9..
When I select my iphone, under the ringtones tab, that list is cut off at 8, and no way to scroll down.. so I TAKE IT, THERE IS A LIMIT?
Jack on December 29th, 2008 at 2:02 am
Aack! I just spent a half hour trying to figure out why my newly created ringtone wasn’t showing up in my iPhone. It ends up the the song title had a comma in it, and when I deleted the comma the song showed up in the custom ringtone list.
Something to watch out for! Has anyone found the same for other punctuation marks?

Just did it with itunes 8.2.20 with an iphone v 2.2
Took me a few goes to get it right, but it did work!
If you want to move the ringtones off your desktop… add them into itunes, then cut and paste them into a folder of your choice (that is easy to find!) then in itunes (when it says ‘file cannot be found’) relocate it to the new folder
:)
thanks everyone for the tips!

I just tried the steps with iPhone 2G (1st gen), iTunes 8.0.2.20 and Vista. I got it working eventually and would like to share my mistakes, hope this info can help others who might encounter the same problems
1) I already have a song in AAC, thought that I could simply set the start and stop time on the Option property page and save. However, I had to explicitly create a new AAC version after setting the time values from the original AAC song.
2) I first clipped a song more than 30 seconds, which seemed not being recognized as a ringtone and couldn’t get sync’d to my iPhone. Looks like the clipped song needs to be less than 30 seconds (at least in my case)
3) I forgot to delete the clipped AAC version in iTunes before I dragged the .m4r file back to iTunes. With the clipped AAC present, the .m4r showed up properly on iTunes in the device, but it doesn’t appear as a custom ringtone on iPhone. Once the clipped AAC was deleted, the custom ringtone showed up properly.
Many thanks to the writer of this post!! And hope everyone can get it to work and enjoy your free custom ringtone!

If you have done everything but it still won’t appear on your phone try changing the name to something simple like “mytone” in iTunes then resync… watch the bar at the top to make sure you see the file being synced with your phone… then go to sounds and look right at the top of the list under “Custom” ring tones :-)

for those that still having trouble seeing your custom ringtones, i have a similar experience but finally solved it. As someone mentioned earlier, the ringtone’s name is actually very restrictive. Someone mentioned you can’t have special characters. I found out the hard way, after almost an hour of trying to follow the directions mentioned on this page to no avail, finally realized the name cannot be too long either. My original file “Somewhere only we know” was apparently too long, but “Somewhere” worked.

If you want your own ring tones on any phone, easy as owning a mac.
1.
Import any song from your music list in iTunes into Garage Band.
2.
Select the bit you want to use, about 25 seconds.
3.
Edit by splitting the track, then delete the unwanted parts.
4.
Move the selected bit to the start of the track.
5.
Save as an an MP3 file under the “share” drop down.
6.
Export to the phone using blue tooth.
Send this info to other blogs if you find it useful.

Is there a way to repeat the created 30 second ringtone?
Adam 1.0 on February 26th, 2009 at 2:52 am
Make sure that;
* Clip is 30s or under (if you can get it to work with more then good luck to you)
* The file name starts with a capital and has no special characters in it
* That you double click it to put it into Itunes
* That the file info is relatively clear. No need to have albums/composers etc.. Wipe all these and give your ringtone a short name. Only you need to be able to distinguish between these so there’s no need to give all the information.
That’s how I managed to get mine to work. Before that they were showing up in iTunes but not syncing onto the phone.

Ok so I got my ringtone to work from itunes on my iPhone then noticed that when I receive a call I can’t hear the person talking, but they can hear me. My speakers for everything else works fine. Nothing is muted. I have restored the settings and changed ringtone to a factory setting and it works but as soon as I change the ringtone back to my song then I can’t hear anything again. Has anyone experienced this and how do I get a custom ringtone and still hear my calls?

I remember the 7 year hiatus Aoike Yasuko pulled off with Eroica, wich she’s still writing today. CLAMP’s Legal Drug is supposedly ending it’s relatively SHORT hiatus of, what, 3 years? Gawd knows how long Yami no Matsuei 12 has been on hiatus. Bustling mangakas with staffs or manga software tend to spit out no more than 4 manga a year, the rest have to do at least one

i have the newest version of itunes and an iphone 3g and i followed the steps to the “t” and it worked great. i have vista and to change the extension default i went under “computer” then to “options” then “change folder settings” then “view” then i unchecked the “hide file extension” box. i don’t know what others are doing wrong but it ahs worked just perfect for me and being the cheapskate that i am i’m so excited to be making these ringtones for myself.
LoneWolf on May 22nd, 2009 at 11:19 am
Hey Jeffrey. This happens often. IT also happens when trying to make a power hour mix ;)
What you need to do is make a copy of the song and title it something else. Maybe add “ring” after the song title. Then upload it to itunes and use that file to change while leaving the normal one the same. That should work, however I have not even tried any of this yet. I only know that happened to me when trying to make a powerhour mix. I assume it’s the same

I was so use to using my Palm Centro phone. I decided to upgrade to an iPhone. It seems like I’m downgrading. The iPhone has you jump through to many hoops to do what was drag and drop on the Palm Centro. No video either! But at least there is a way to beat buying every ringtone. This solution you came up with works great. Thanks…..

I found that even when i changed the file extension, when i doubled clicked to open the file it was still a ’song’ and not a ringtone??? Any ideas why?
Jenn on June 18th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
I can get the single ringtone to my iphone 3g, but when I try to add a 2nd custom ringtone, it replaces the first one and I have 2 ringtones of the exact same song (even though in itunes it shows each song individually).
So, for instance.
First I convert and create “ringtone 1″ put into ringtone folder and sync with iphone so ON my iphone 3g, I have 1 custom ringtone, called “ringtone 1″
then, I convert and create “ringtone 2″ and put into ringtone folder and sync with iphone. This is where the problem starts … “ringtone 2″ is now listed TWICE on my iphone and “ringtone 1″ is no longer there, though in iTunes it shows each ringtone in my ringtone folder.
Anyone have any ideas? I’d love to have more individualized ringtones for some of my contacts but at this rate, I have 1 generic custom ringtone since I can’t get it (my phone) to recongnize more than 1 custom ringtone at a time.
Charlie on June 18th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

Jenn on June 18th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Well, I figured out my issue and now have 2 custom ringtones on my phone (am going to try to make some more in a few, but wanted to update my problem/solution)..
I went through my music list in my itunes music library and made sure to delete any of the short sound clips I’d used to make into my ringtones. I did that and then moved the 2, renamed music files into my ringtones library and wah-la – they both show up.

I have just got my I phone 3g and I tunes 8.2 and no matter what I do I just can’t get the ringtone into the ringtones folder, it will only go into the music folder. Reading on I tunes it does say that to create a ringtone from a song with a bell cannot be done in the UK, does this extend to this method as well. Someone please help before I go crazy.

pluto6 on June 20th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
OK -
After messing around for a while – For those of you having trouble getting the new file into the ringtone area – iTunes adds the .m4a extension to your renamed .m4r file – example : Ringtone.m4r imports to iTunes as Ringtone.m4r.m4a – so you need to use an aftermarket program that will let you change the “type” of program from m4a to m4r – then the file will actually show up as a ringtone, and you can easily drag and drop to the ringtone folder.
You might also notice that your renamed “Ringtone” still maintains the old real name of the song – that is because renaming the file does not change the embedded ID tags – you need a program that will let you into those tags if you want to actually change the name, but there are many excellent free ones out there. Good Luck to everyone.
Dan on June 22nd, 2009 at 7:44 pm
You actually don’t need any special program to change the type of program… you just need to change a setting under My Computer – Under folder options > view, uncheck the box that says “hide file extension” – then it will show the .m4a along with the name, and allow you to replace that with .m4r…. simple as that.
This is a REALLY awesome tip! wish I knew before I bought a ringtone maker program.
pluto6 on June 22nd, 2009 at 10:59 pm
Dan –
And to think that I consider myself a relative “power user”. I have got so used to using another Explorer Program that I don’t even bother with the problems associated with Windows Explorer – but, I went ahead and unchecked the box that “protects” me. I had read your comment above, and was thinking “of course that needs to be done”, and had never done it myself.
pluto6 on June 20th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
An excellent program to get really precise timing for starting / stopping of the ringtone is called Audacity available at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ . I import the songs, and then can get the ring tone to start and stop down to about the millisecond. It takes a bit of fiddling, but the program is pretty intuitive. I only use a fraction of the programs potential, as I only use it to get exact sections of songs that I want, but it works great for that. Sorry that this is off topic, but the use of the start / stop times in itunes is really imprecise, and the result sounds like it.

pluto6 on June 21st, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Humble -
When you go into iTunes Preferences – on the first tab – “General” there is a button about 1/2 way down on the right – “Import Settings”. Click on that, and then select the AAC option, and do whatever sound quality that you want. Once you do that, you should see a “Create AAC Version” once you right click on the song. I suspect that you are seeing a “Create MP3 version” when you right click now. Hope this helps, and good luck.

pluto6 on June 22nd, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Sal – Confirm that you actually have your ringtones – they will show up in the ringtones folder on the iTunes window. Assuming you have those, just go into Settings, then Sounds – and you will see a button there for ringtones. They will all be there in the Custom Area (above the Standard). Many people are having problems actually getting the ringtones into iTunes – read the thread, and you will see how it is done for either PC and/or Mac. Good Luck.

Sounds like what Sal above had going on. You also need to make sure that you are synching ringtones in your iTunes. I don’t recall the settings, but if the ringtones are showing up in your iTunes Ringtone folder, they should be able to be moved to the phone. There is an issue with the synch…

It’s a shame that Apple have now found a way to stop this working. I’ve used this method successfully in the past but the latest version of iTunes has put a stop to it. Apple have turned into a bunch of money grabbing b’stards, with their main advances seeming to be finding new ways to milk more money out of customers.

Einstein, this method works for me with a brand new (today) iPhone 3G and the latest version of iTunes (I had to update it to sync with the new phone), on Mac OS 10.4.11. And I’m in Canada, and use the US iTunes Store, but I don’t think recognition of file types is configured differently for different countries. Their own ringtones use the same file type/extension, AFAIK – how would they tell the difference? I don’t think Apple has done anything to prevent the use of user-created m4r’s as ringtones.

Hints?

Really useful. An easy and straight forward process. Tried two other ways that did not work. This did. Instructions were very clear and simple. Many thanks.
PGAPRO2006 on July 24th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Well I also don’t want to sound like an idiot, and I’ve done everything, 10 times, and I still cant get the ringtone from desktop to ringtone section of the library. It just winds back into the regular library. Looks like others have had success, any ideas?

Awesome! An online workaround tip that actually works. I have the exact same thoughts as John from earlier today: Really useful. An easy and straightforward process. Tried two other ways that did not work. This did. Instructions were very clear and simple. Many thanks.

Really big thanks. Finally I can use my songs. You are a good man. Keep going that direction by helping others.
Mike on July 27th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
I had problems with the ringtone not showing up in ITunes 8 as well. I solved it by creating a Folder ‘Ringtones’ within ‘ITunes Music’ and put the .m4r file there. Then importing the folder did the trick. Hope that works for you too.
BTW: I’m on a macbook, IPhone 3GS in the Netherlands
Mike on July 27th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
Make sure you turn off the option in ITunes to copy or manage files to the library by ITunes.

for those people who can get the file to show up in the ringtones section under the library and not in the ringtone section on the iphone, make sure you delete the file you made the rigntone from and it has to be less then 30 seconds
ElectronicIlliterate on August 23rd, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Do you mean the file that was moved to the desk top and delete it? Or the actual song in itunes itself?

Figii on December 27th, 2009 at 9:09 am
You have to right click on the clipped song in itunes and select convert selection to ACC. You will then see a duplicate of the song right beneath the original.

Max is 30 seconds – that may account for your problem

Nate on August 7th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
OK. For those of you who are stuck. The trick is deleting the song you converted to AAC from iTunes.
1. Convert to AAC
2. copy it to your desktop and rename
3. Make sure the song you made the ringtone out of has been deleted from your library
4. Double click the renamed file.

I’m having the same problem. I’ve used his method several times before to add ringtones to my iPhone. Now, however, it’s not working. My iTunes SAYS that the ringtone is in my iPhone, but I can’t access it from the Settings app on the phone itself.
solomon on August 8th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!! it works
xlilchatxonx on August 9th, 2009 at 2:12 am
Tin and Jenn
I’m having the same problem both of you had. I’ve tried everything, even what Jenn suggested. I even took the original song out of the library. But no matter what, whatever song I add to my ringtones folder last shows up 2x like it’s just copied (I only made 2 ringtones) but if I delete that last song from my ringtones folder (leaving me with the first song I made) then the first one shows up on my iphone again only one time… so I KNOW it’s there, I just don’t understand what’s going on, obviously other people have had this problem, so it’s not just me. I’m using the most current version of iTunes and I have the iPhone 3g using Windows Vista.
Anyone have any ideas as to why 2 copies of the last added song shows up when in the folder it shows my two different songs? (and will play them too if I click the play button, so I know it’s definitely not a copy).

HELP PLEASE!
i have converted the file and its in my ringtones but its not in sounds on my phone??
any suggestions??
please help!
DD on August 24th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
geraldine, you might need to make sure you are syncing ring tones. I had an issue with my custom ringtone from being synced but then I remembered that I limit what I put on my iPhone since I have the 16GB version. In the Windows version of iTunes just connect your iPhone and then select it in left pane. The right pane should display a bevy of tabs along the top. Click on ring tones and then choose the option you want. I also found out that the song I choose was over writing the orginal full length version on my iPhone so I renamed the file and it worked. I hope this helps.
DD on August 24th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
This work great for me, shame that we have to resort to this to get ring tones without having to pay $2.

Just wanted to confirm that this works for me! I’m not sure about the length issue but a :20 second clip worked. Since I had unchecked the option to “Sync Ringtones” in my iPhone’s setup, that option wasn’t available to me (it would have erased everything on the phone, and I’d have had to start over).
HOWEVER, I was able to get the file via “Show in Finder” and then simply drag and drop into the Ringtones area for the phone within iTunes. (Click the “Ringtones” menu item under your iPhone, on the left sidebar from inside iTunes.)
Works like a charm! Huge thanks!

How do you rename a ringtone? I right click it but it has no option for renaming??
Timmeh on September 23rd, 2009 at 9:45 am
If you have Windows Vista 64bit as I do go to
Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View(tab at top)>Deselect the “Hide extensions for known file types” Box
Click Apply
Go to ur desktop where ur music icon is. Right click and go to properties.
Change from .m4a > .m4r
click ok
Double click the file on ur desktop and it will send it to ur itunes ringtone folder automatically.
Go to ur phone in itunes and click the “Ringtones” Tab
Click Selected Ringtones and check all the ones u want on ur phone.
Click Sync on bottom right of Itunes
Voila! That should do it! Good Luck

Awesome…worked well for me.
Go to DOS prompt and your Desktop folder.
Eg: c:/>dir *.m4a
rin1.m4a —> to change ext to m4 r do the following:
c:/>ren rin1.m4a rin1.m4r
You need to know a bit of DOS to work with it.
Good Luck.

Chuck on September 29th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Nevermind, I figured out the issue. If you’re like me and chose “manually manage songs and videos” then you can’t just add the new tones to your iPhone ringtone section. You have to add them to My Library ringtone section then sync your iPhone. Unfortunately doing so removes any songs/videos you had already manually added, but it doesn’t take too long to go and add them again.

Thanks goodness Apple removed DRM protection from iTunes, that removes a step from the process. I’d like to add that many people don’t have a bluetooth to transfer their ringtones to their phone so they’ll to use an app like Data pilot to copy any music files from your hard drive (usually in “My Documents/My Music” on Windows) to your phone.

If you have Windows 7 64bit and ITunes 9 as I do go to
Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View(tab at top)>Deselect the “Hide extensions for known file types” Box
Click Selected Ringtones and check all the ones u want on ur phone (not if not already selected this will want to clear all existing music – believe it if you select it it will!!).
Click Sync on bottom right of Itunes
Voila! That should do it! Good Luck

Dear lord what a hassle! I’ve been finnicking around with mp3’s, m4a’s and m4r’s for an hour, my desktop is littered with files, my iTunes library is a mess, and still no ringtone! Is this what Apple considers user-friendly?? What a nightmare!
Audiophonic on October 29th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
Apple is making it harder to make ringtones on iTunes. But there are lots of free iphone ringtones on the internet if you search for them.
I get mine at http://www.iphoneringtones.ca and they have cool wallpapers too.
skeptic on October 29th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
At first i couldnt get it to work. Tip for someone who isn’t savvy with this info like myself. when you change to m4r just RENAME the song and change that. it HAS to be the m4a not mp3 when you change the name. the m4a is created when you create AAC from a song. my best advice is create the aac then do an overall search for your song. theres an MP3 and M4A file for the song…add the m4a to your desktop then rename as stated before. i finally got it to work…that was a little tricky. freaking sweet though once it works!

Nas on November 1st, 2009 at 9:06 am
Im having trouble choosing a stop time in the lastest itunes. It seems like it sees the stop time as the amount of time after the stop time but it cant be lower than the start time.
For example if i choose start time as 0:05 and then stop time as 0:20, it will play the song from 0:05 to 0:25.
If i choose start time 1:00 it won’t let me enter stop time less than 1:00 but if i enter stop time as 1:10 it will play the song from 1:00 to 2:10 and not to 1:10 like i thought it should.
Is this a bug?????

RJ thanks for the post… couldnt rename the file extenstions, and your solution worked perfectly. Just a little misleading…click on my computer, then organize, then folder and search properties…from there its all correct in vista.
Jonathan on November 4th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
Nas,
I encountered the same problem. I was trying to choose a start time from 1:10 to 1:30 and after converting it to AAC it would play for a minute and thirty seconds. Does anybody else know a way to fix or get around this?
Jessica,
On your desktop he means options not “get info” the “get info” is only when you’re on itunes. If you can’t change the extension I suggest you follow this:
to change the extension on your desktop you will have to first configure Windows to show the file extention (it is hidden by default).
(this is taken from “mk” at the top of the page)
Jonathan on November 4th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
To Nas & others who encountered the same problem,
So I just got a way around it. Basically since it plays more than what you want, referring to the AAC conversion. So for example Nas, you had the problem:
“If i choose start time 1:00 it won’t let me enter stop time less than 1:00 but if i enter stop time as 1:10 it will play the song from 1:00 to 2:10 and not to 1:10 like i thought it should.”
What you can do is that once you make the 1st AAC conversion you can once again do the start and stop times and convert that one once more. So it was playing from 1:00 to 2:10 when you only wanted up to 1:10, you shorten it again so that this time it does play from 1:00 to 1:10 but when you do the start and stop times it would be ” start: 0:00 and stop : 10″ or longer if you like. hope this helps you all out

So what the hell, i finally convinced myself to dl the song and pay extra bucks. Then turns out all the songs i purchased are non ringtone eligible. its a cheap scam. they should let you preview it to see if its ringtone eligible before you purchase it!. so mad

Figii on December 27th, 2009 at 8:53 am
If it’s not working, you must have skipped a step somewhere. I have been able to convert my Blackberry ringtones for use on my Iphone. In step 5 of these instructions, I don’t go to “get info” I just got to properties in the right click window to change the extension. Remember that you are only changing the last letter of the extension from an a to a r.

Peach on December 28th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
For those people who could not find the ringtone in the ringtone section in iTune after double clicking, all you need to do is:
After creating the AAC version of the music file, right click on the converted version in iTune, and select DELETE. A window then pops up, which you click on “Keep file” delete option.
Follow the rest of the instruction to complete.
Oh, and you don’t need to drag the file onto Desktop. You can apply the extension change directly to the file in the iTune music file in Finder.
Hope that helps.
steven on December 30th, 2009 at 4:35 am
hi how do i change it to m4r file on a pc?
SF on December 30th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
This did not work for me either with iTunes 9.0.2.25 and the 3G (using a PC). It could not locate the source ringtone files after deleting them from the desktop.
Use the information in the previous post from Jonathan on November 4th, 2009 at 11:20 pm to be able to see your extensions and change them to the .m4r format.
Follow the steps in Jonathan’s post above, then in the article. However, in step 4 of the article, try something different.
Open your Music folder from the Start Menu. Create a “Ringtones” folder inside of the Music folder. Drag your newly created files into this folder from iTunes (instead of putting them on the desktop).
Follow all of the same steps, except replace any actions that tell you to use the desktop with using your new Ringtones folder. This allows you to keep your source ringtone files so iTunes can detect them when needed. Do not delete the files that you place in this folder or you will receive errors later that iTunes cannot locate the files.
Once you have your file(s) dragged into and renamed with the .m4r format in your new Ringtones folder, go back to iTunes.
Go to File > Add File to Library… >
Locate your Music > Ringtones folder and upload the new files you created into your library. Double clicking the file in the new Ringtones folder may also yield the same results, but I did not try this method. The file extension is recognized and automatically places the file into the Ringtones folder in your iTunes Library.
Open the iPod app on the iPhone to automatically sync the Library. The new ringtones should be available from your selections now. (I went to a contact to change their ringtone to make sure the songs were there and they were – thank goodness!)
This requires more steps, but it worked for me after all else failed.
SF on December 30th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
By the way, you have to configure your settings to automatically sync ringtones for this to work.
If you already have a lot of ringtones, I suggest saving them in your new Ringtones folder on your PC before doing proceeding (see previous post). This way, you can add them back to the Library later if the syncing process wipes them. I did not have any, so I did not encounter an issue.
* In iTunes, under Devices, select your iPhone. On the right side of the screen, choose the Ringtones tab. Check “Sync ringtones” and select “All ringtones”. Preferrably, do this before you start the other steps mentioned previously.
This will sync what you are uploading in your iTunes Ringtones folder to what appears on your iPhone’s Ringtones folder.
When your phone syncs it will update. In my experience, all of them may not update at first, but they will over time, each time you sync with your phone.

I just tried 3 songs and they all worked. so i went back and tried the ones that didnt work and now they also work…the only thing i can think of that i did different is not switching them to AAC from the itunes search, i just scrolled down my song list. Hey guys, a quick tip I found on this website,

is that your ringtones MUST NOT exceed 40 SECONDS, or else your iPhone won’t recognise it. Took me a lot of Googling to find this out.
Hope this will clear up lots of confusions out there.

only problem is you have to do this to every contact…

Some people are so so stupid- that sounds horrible to say but it is so true! If you can not work out how to use google you should not be using the internet. Also if you post without reading through the whole list of answers you are just lazy.
If you cant see ‘get info’ when you right click the file on the desktop its because you are using Windows and not a Mac OS. Click properties instead.
If you can not see the file extension to change to ‘m4r’ search this page for ‘mk’ (without the quotations) and he tells you on how to change folder options.
Full kudos to the guy who wrote this!! Also sorry about the rant but it is not hard to use google to find your answers

I’ve found the 3GS since I got it last week so frustrating, can’t set my own ringtones, can’t sync with more than one machine (Come on, I’ve got a laptop, my work computer is allowed itunes, why can’t I buy and sync from more than one location?) there are so many daft restrictions.
Well I think there’s another one now, after following these instructions which work perfectly (thanks) I sync my new ringtone over…. get a warning about everything being wiped off my iphone for syncing a new ringtone. What the heck? Seriously this is really bad apple, really bad. My iPod touch is a breeze to use….

I think the easiest (and cheapest because it’s free) way to make iPhone ringtones is through EZ iPhone RIngtones (www.eziphoneringtones.com).
Using QuickVoice or Voice Memos app simply make a recording (30-seconds or less because that all the iPhone allows) and then from within the app email it to tones@eziphoneringtones.com. A few moments later check your email for the attached perfectly formatted ringtone…works great!
