Darlene,

make sure the new clip is .m4r format and when it is opened
on your desktop with iTunes it should automatically
be added to the ringtones section if you have done all previous steps
correctly.

i can get to the clipping part i entered my start and stop times but when i right click on the clipped song there is not “convert selection to AAC”???????

I was able to successfully do all of this right up to the part about putting the new file into the Ringtones section in my iTunes library. I can not get the file to move into the library. Any thoughts? Thanks.

works like a charm! thanks. apple’s istore and itunes pissed me off. i didnt wanna pay but i really wanted a custom ringtone. So what the hell, i finally convinced myself to dl the song and pay extra bucks. Then turns out all the songs i purchased are non ringtone eligible. its a cheap scam. they should let you preview it to see if its ringtone eligible before you purchase it!. so mad

Yeah it works fine but I can only seem to do it for 3 songs, and then the next one doesn’t show up on my iPhone. (3GS)

hi, when I upload 2 ringtone into the Iphone, I was only able to see one. When I deleted the previous one, I can play the new one. Hence, I’m wondering if Iphone can accept only one custom ringtone.

To Nas & others who encountered the same problem,

So I just got a way around it. Basically since it plays more than what you want, referring to the AAC conversion. So for example Nas, you had the problem:

“If i choose start time 1:00 it won’t let me enter stop time less than 1:00 but if i enter stop time as 1:10 it will play the song from 1:00 to 2:10 and not to 1:10 like i thought it should.”

What you can do is that once you make the 1st AAC conversion you can once again do the start and stop times and convert that one once more. So it was playing from 1:00 to 2:10 when you only wanted up to 1:10, you shorten it again so that this time it does play from 1:00 to 1:10 but when you do the start and stop times it would be ” start: 0:00 and stop : 10″ or longer if you like. hope this helps you all out

I encountered the same problem. I was trying to choose a start time from 1:10 to 1:30 and after converting it to AAC it would play for a minute and thirty seconds. Does anybody else know a way to fix or get around this?

On your desktop he means options not “get info” the “get info” is only when you’re on itunes. If you can’t change the extension I suggest you follow this:

to change the extension on your desktop you will have to first configure Windows to show the file extention (it is hidden by default). To do this follow the instructions below:

1. Open My Computer
2. In the menu bar, choose Tools and then choose Folder Options
3. Click the View tab
4. Uncheck the box for “Hide extensions for known file types”
5. Click on “Apply to all folders”
6. Click OK to close window

Now you should see the file extension of every file. Simply right-click the file and choose rename to change the extension from m4a to m4r. Finally, follow the same instructions to hide the exetensions.

RJ thanks for the post… couldnt rename the file extenstions, and your solution worked perfectly. Just a little misleading…click on my computer, then organize, then folder and search properties…from there its all correct in vista.

Im having trouble choosing a stop time in the lastest itunes. It seems like it sees the stop time as the amount of time after the stop time but it cant be lower than the start time.

For example if i choose start time as 0:05 and then stop time as 0:20, it will play the song from 0:05 to 0:25.

If i choose start time 1:00 it won’t let me enter stop time less than 1:00 but if i enter stop time as 1:10 it will play the song from 1:00 to 2:10 and not to 1:10 like i thought it should.

Is this a bug?????

I was able to follow the step without problems until I synced the iphone, my custom ringtone didn’t show up in the custom section of the ringtones, only the puchased ringtones was there. Then I finally figured out that the original file that you are converting to aac (eventualy to m4r) must be over 30 seconds so you can chop it down. I had a 7 second mp3 file which I converted to a ringtone m4r, it didn’t show up on my phone. When I looped the 7 sec sound 10 times in wav editor and make the file 1m10s. I went back into itunes then checked the start and stop times to under 30 sec, converted to aac, then m4r and presto it worked!!! I finally got my ringtone that I want after 2 days of fustration.
