Apple Releases Mac OS X Update 10.5.7
There was a lot of buzz that it might come today, and it has. Apple just released Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 for download via Software Update. As one, let us install and restart our computers. Maybe the Internet will pause for a second in our absence.
Here are some highlights from the new release:
- Includes additional RAW image support for several third-party cameras.
- Improves performance of video playback and cursor movements for recent Macs with NVIDIA graphics.
- Improves the reliability and accuracy of Unit Converter, Stocks, Weather and Movies Dashboard widgets.
- Addresses a situation that may cause issues when logging into Gmail.
- Improves reliability when syncing contacts with Yahoo.
- Improves network performance when connected to certain Ethernet switches that have Flow Control enabled.
- Improves stability for network home directories hosted by Mac OS X Server v10.4.
- Improves Finder search results for network volumes that may not support Spotlight searching, such as Mac OS X Server v10.4, Time Capsule, and third-party AFP servers.
- Includes several improvements to Directory Service and Client Management, which are described in the About Mac OS X Server 10.5.7 Update article.
For a complete list of fixes and enhancements, check out Apple’s official support article detailing the release. As always, let us know if the update brings any unpleasant surprises.

I’ll be waiting a bit before I download this… always seems like there’s a few bugs to work out.

Good update, i apply in my macbook pro unibody now :)

“Addresses a situation that may cause issues when logging into Gmail”. Anybody has an idea what the situation was or is?

I wasn’t able to download the update this afternoon. Kept getting checksum errors stating the download file had been changed since signed.
Giving it another try tonight… I haven’t been able to sync notes with my iPhone since beta 4 and am looking forward to having that functionality back :)

I’ve got it going on my Macbook and iMac. Haven’t tried notes syncing with iPhone beta 5 yet, but OS X finally recognizes my Windows partition with Win 7 installed in Startup Disk prefpane, which is awesome. Good update.

Seeing on Twitter that 10.5.7 might break USB audio. Let us know if that’s happened to you, too.

Can’t seem to download 10.5.7. Digital something has been altered after signed by apple. I think I will wait until they work out the bugs. It seems a lot of people have been having problems with this already. When upgraded to 10.5.6 I got a tun of repair permission issues. My Imac seems fine so I will drive on. AND BACK UP!
Catmanrog on May 13th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
10.5.7 Updater and Combo Updater both produce a non-sleep condition on closing my Macbook Pro 17. System freezes upon opening; requiring a restart. May need to go back to 10.5.6….

@Catmanrog My Black plastic Macbook is successfully sleeping on lid close, though it seems to be taking a lot longer to do so.

My MBP (Core2 Duo 2.3 Ghz) fails to boot and goes into a cycle of continuous reboot after installing the updated I downloaded from Apple.com. The reason I used Apple.com instead of Software Update was because Software Update kept giving be checksum errors. Gonna have to slick and reinstall from TimeMachine. Thank God for TimeMachine!
Catmanrog on May 14th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
Thanks for input. My MBP wouldn’t sleep when closed and froze when open. This is the first Apple Updater and Combo Updater to fail for me on my MBP. I have always repaired permissions with Disk Utility before and after the update. I have always backed up using SuperDuper and in this case, the reversion to 10.5.7 was easy. BTW, my MBP is a Duo 2.6 Intel with GeForce 8600M GT video chip and not the ATI referenced above by Macworld article.

My Software update does not recognize that 10.5.7 is available.
It tells me “No software updates are available at this time”. I rebooted the computer as well.
Does anyone have advice on this issue?

Catmanrog on May 14th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Richard – What OSX version are you running ? (Check under Apple/About This Mac) Open “Software Update” file in System Preferences. Have you done OSX Update 10.5.6 ? From Apple Support: The Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update is recommended for all versions of Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.5.6.
* The delta update lets you update from Mac OS X 10.5.6 to 10.5.7
* The combo update lets you update from Mac OS X 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2, 10.5.3, 10.5.4, 10.5.5, or 10.5.6 to 10.5.7
Your version may require you to use the Combo Updater available as a download from Apple
AWarriorPoet on May 14th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Updted to 10.5.7 and can no longer find external USB HardDrive and having trouble sharing the network connection with a Parallels Desktop virtual machine. may have to roll-back.
Richard Smith on May 15th, 2009 at 4:31 am
Catman, thanks for reaching out!
I “religiously” download every update. Right now, I’m using 10.5.6, so I don’t understand why it won’t even recognize that I “need” 10.5.7.
Although judging from some of the headaches I’m hearing about, maybe it’s not such a bad thing right now.

I am having the same sleep problem after downloading 10.5.7 Updater and Combo Updater. System freezes when I try to put it to sleep the second time around. The only option is to reboot. Have yet to see anyone post a solution. I’ve never had any problems previous to this update, so this is very frustrating.
Robert on May 16th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Same problem as MaikaH, exactly. I took the machine to an independent Apple store, and they replaced the logic board. Didn’t do a thing, but now I have a new logic board. Going to the “genius bar” tomorrow. Wish me luck.
Dick D on May 17th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I am having the same “sleep” problem with my MacBook Pro as the ones mentioned above. Disk drive runs continually while it is “asleep,” and case gets very hot. Will not awaken from the non-sleep “sleep” mode. Must reboot. Occasionally it goes to sleep and awakens as desired IF I have selected “sleep” from the Apple menu and not by closing the cover. As long as no programs, such as mail, were running when I put it to sleep, it awakens okay. Have not had this happen enough to ensure it is a real pattern yet.
chrisdm1978 on May 17th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
My macbook Pro 2.4Ghz is experiencing audio dropouts after this update. (MOTU Traveler Firewire interface) As well, some of my authorization codes for audio software (IK multimedia Amplitube 2) no longer work. Nice.

hi, i have the same problem. ik does’nt no longer work. Have you an idea to correct it.
toddZ on May 18th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
my MacBook is having the sleep problems as well… very frustrating. it won’t wake up! I have to restart my computer basically every time I close the clamshell for more than a few minutes.
I’ve tried to reset the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US) but that doesn’t seem to work.
This is the first major problem i’ve had with my Mac, and it’s a big one.
Duke on May 19th, 2009 at 10:01 am
I’m having the exact same wake-from-sleep problem.
toddZ on May 19th, 2009 at 11:48 am
i switched back to 10.5.6 and no more trouble… my last back-up was 2 weeks ago, though, so that kinda sucked. Last time I make that mistake!
I wonder how widespread the problem is… I’m surprised we haven’t heard anything from Apple yet.
marcel on July 3rd, 2009 at 8:33 pm
toddz, how does one switch back to 10.5.6??
would i have to wipe everything and start all over?
what does it take to back up my mac??

my macbook pro 2.33 (2007) with 10.5.7 is waking from sleep without any user intervention.
on top of that i’m quite frequently seeing keyboard disconnect during work (apple aluminium bluetooth keyboard).

possible work around:
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090518095106449
According to several reports around support forums and from e-mail correspondence from our readers, this issue appears to be related to the Ethernet settings on notebooks.
MacFixIt reader “Andreas S.” reports:
“It appears that if the Ethernet is not enabled (airport only network settings) that on the MacBook Pro the sleep only works once and crashes the second time.”
To re-enable the Ethernet port settings:
1. Open System Preferences > Network
2-1. If you see your Ethernet port in your list of network ports (on the left-side of the window) and it says “Inactive,” activate the port by clicking the gear wheel icon and selecting “Make Service Active.” Click “Apply.”
2-2. If you do not see your Ethernet port in your list of network ports (on the left-side of the window), click the “+” button in the bottom-left corner.
3. In the “Interface” drop-down menu, select “Ethernet.”
4. Enter a name and select “Create.” You should see your new Ethernet connection appear.
5. Click “Apply.”
Note: If you are having this issue and your Ethernet port is already enabled, try disabling it (using the gear wheel icon menu > “Make Service Inactive”). Log out or restart your Mac, then enable it. Be sure to “Apply” your changes.
Test your MacBook or MacBook Pro by closing the clamshell. Be sure to try this twice as most reports point to the second attempt at sleep as being the culprit for the freeze. If it does not work, try resetting your Mac and test again.

Since 10.5.7 my iMac (late 2006 model, aluminum wireless kbd) does not properly sleep any more. The first few minutes(?) after putting it to sleep everything is as expected (drive down, screen black, white light blinking), but whenever I come back after a while it is awake. I already reset the SMC, but this did not show any effect.
Richard Sims on May 25th, 2009 at 4:29 am
10.5.7 was inadequately tested: it breaks the X11 utility’s ability to copy-paste with other applications, and the ability to cycle through X11 windows. Has been reported to Apple. If you use X11, avoid 10.5.7.
TomT on June 27th, 2009 at 7:23 am
yes, my beautiful new mbp does not allow paste to x11, very frustrating, and limiting. (terminal serves as a work around for my needs of this moment)
Kelly Eshpeter on May 26th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Major problems after the 10.5.7 update. Would run fine for an hour or so after booting up but soon after would slow right down that it became unusable. Links would not respond, Time Machine backup (the drive and the icon) stuttered. System would not recognize my external Sata drive. After rebooting, would work okay for a while then slow right back down again. Restored system via Time Machine to 10.5.6, everything went back to normal. Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 MHz, 10 GB RAM
Sam R on May 26th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
I second Richard Sim’s comment: I had no problem copying and pasting between X11 and other applications before doing the 10.5.7 update. Now I can’t go in either direction! I use emacs (via ssh) every day, and this is a seriously frustrating outcome of the update. Like an idiot, I did not back up my Macbook before doing the update, so I really hope Apple comes out with a fix for this immediately.
jim davis on May 28th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
My problem with sleep matches all of those that are affecting most of you. It is most annoying.
Sam on May 29th, 2009 at 8:28 am
after the 10.5.7 update i had problems with the audio output of my SpeedLink Medusa 5.1 USB headphones – started ‘Audio MIDI Setup’ and switched Audio Output from 44100.0 Hz to 48000.0 Hz fixed the problems …

When searching, and finding updates, my MacBook looks as it is supposed to. When it’s time to install the updates, I have to say yes to the agreement, tells me the update will take quite a while, tells me a restart is needed; I put in my password, it restarts, and never installs any of the “11″ updates it showed me I need, the install bar remains empty then goes away, and the Mac restarts, it takes all of 5 seconds.
I have done this many times. I thought it was me, then I began looking at my Mac, but I had an Office update this morning, that went well, so there is nothing wrong with my MacBook.
After finding this site and reading all the issues people are having with the 10.5.7 update, I am no longer going to worry about it. My Mac works great, I will wait!
Thank you al for sharing, I hope all of you that are having issues, get them resolved quickly!
Blessed Be

I have a MOTU Ultralite mk3 and I get audio dropouts (even with the newest MOTU driver 1.4.20) for mac os 10.5.7 (in iTunes and Logic Pro). Is there a possibility to switch back to 10.5.6 ?

Since I’ve installed the update, my computer has been running at half the speed it was before. Programs take much longer to load and there’s a definite slow down in any of the CS4 programs. How can I revert back to the previous version?

I updated my wife’s “early 2008″ MacBook Pro with 10.5.7 Combo and it would not sleep and would freeze when the lid was opened.
I cloned her drive, installed a fresh 10.5.6. No sleep issues. Installed the 10.5.7 Combo. No problem sleeping. Used Migration Utility to restore all her files and apps and preferences. Now it won’t sleep and/or it freezes.

Having a nightmare since trying to update to 10.5.7. When I tried to restart it after the download a dialogue box told me it was correcting caches before it could boot up. Six hours later nothing had happened to I unplugged the whole thing. Now it takes ages to boot up and keeps freezing. Is going back to the previous version the best idea? Or should I just wait for an Apple patch? I’m worried about losing stuff.
BC Low on June 7th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
I updated to 10.5.7 from 10.5.6 – first there was a problem with the automatic updates. Then when I rebooted after the installation, it was cycling through blueish screens, never getting to the login. After an hour of that, I rebooted, now it gets stuck with the “no smoking” sign after briefly showing the apple logo. Using the disk utilities, it shows all my data is still there, but I can’t boot into this “updated” mac. I’ll be taking it in as I just can’t deal with OS problems and infant twins at the same time. Thanks Apple.

I’m having sensitive mouse click behavior on my iMac. Click once on the top of a window and there it goes into the dock. Highlighting is a nightmare. Single click registers as double click. Go to delete one email and delete two. UGH!!

The same problem here. Very slow boots, No wake from sleep I’m on a macbook pro 2.2 ghz. All after 10.5.7 and the latest firmware update.
Sean on June 18th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
The sleep issue is happening to my business partner. I updated her Apple software via Apple Software Update in System Preferences and this sleep issue happened during the night. Her husband left the MacBook Pro plugged in with the lid closed, presumably sleeping, and went to bed while the MBPro charged all night. When they awoke in the morning the MBPro was extremely hot, almost like it could start on fire.
I cannot say which update caused the problem but I am guessing it is the 10.5.7 that everyone is mentioning.
Will on June 21st, 2009 at 9:12 am
My Mac Pro started up very fast (tens of seconds) before I installed the 10.5.7 update. It now takes about four minutes after the update. Repairing disk permissions had no effect. It just sits there with the blue screen and I cannot hear the disk doing anything.
It seems to be fine once it has started up.

think the Smu firmware update is what killed mine.

Same issue. I installed 10.5.7 and on the second sleep attempt it locks up. I have to reboot. Very annoying as I am constantly sleeping my computer as I travel around. Apple this needs to get fixed ASAP!

Okay, so i DEFINITELY have a big problem with the SLEEP MODE issue after updating to 10.5.7 – and i’m quite worried about what i read concerning the MOTU interface (but haven’t checked mine yet) //// so WHY does this page start by telling everyone to INSTALL the update first? and WHY does apple say NOTHING about these details on their own site? and HOW can i re-install OS 10.5.6 (which worked just fine, btw). sorry bout all the CAPs, but it’s really frustrating…

Disabled Sleep in System Pref/Energy Saver. Just using screen saver, shutting down occasionally. No more freezes, fan noise. Waiting for next update, hoping Apple addresses the issue.

I downloaded and installed the OS update and my macbook sleep function got hosed. It would not come out of sleep without a hard reboot via power button. disk lights were spinning in sleeping mode.
I got my time machine disk and revertd back to before the update was applied all is well with this for a week, sleep works good comes out of sleep no prob.
i decided to download the update again last night. same thin, sleep is broke. here omes time machine backup again. I will not do another OS update.
