Author Archive for Billy Halsey

Billy's introduction to the World Wide Web came, oddly enough, by way of OmniWeb on a NeXTstation. Not too surprising, really, since some 10 years earlier, he had learned desktop publishing with PageMaker on the Mac Classic. A veteran Unix admin and programmer, Billy was happy to make the leap to OS X. "As long as it's got command line access, I'm happy," he's been known to say. Having worked with AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, IRIX, and Linux, he finds OS X the best of them all and the only one that doesn't sacrifice usability for power. Billy has worked in a variety of industries and positions, but now he's primarily a writer pinpointing his efforts on blogging and fiction. You can reach him by email at tab@paXoo.com. He also answers to the name Professor MacLovin.

TextMate: No longer a reason to avoid Git

Written on January 09, 2008 by Billy Halsey and 10 people have commented

I wrote recently about my headaches using Subversion with iWork documents (“iWork hates Subversion”). The consensus from the comments was that I needed to ditch Subversion for a more modern version control system. Both Mercurial and Git were popular among commenters. (I decided on Git, incidentally. The transition was extremely smooth.)

One TAB reader, HG, lamented [...]

iWork hates Subversion

Written on January 04, 2008 by Billy Halsey and 20 people have commented

Or does Subversion hate iWork? I was just hit with the iWork/SVN bug that seems to be infamous among those using the two products concurrently. The problem, essentially, is the way that iWork—Pages, Numbers, and Keynote—and Subversion store their files.
It’s well-known that, for some time, Apple has chosen to package certain files as bundles; they [...]

Time Machine isn’t perfect

Written on October 29, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 14 people have commented

One of the most highly touted features new to Leopard is Time Machine, the “always on” backup system that takes the effort and guesswork out of backing up important data. But, to the chagrin of many (or at least myself), Time Machine does not backup to AirDisks. I have not personally tried it, but when [...]

Leopard-print T-shirts?

When Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) arrives on Friday, Apple retail stores will be open extended hours from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., with live demonstrations and Geniuses on hand to answer your Leopard questions. Also, the first 500 customers at each store will receive a free special edition Leopard T-shirt. But, contrary to the [...]

(Re-)building the dream home with Live Interior 3D

Written on October 23, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 1 person has commented

Although I’ve been fortunate, many of my neighbors here in San Diego are now finding themselves without homes because of the wild fires raging through Southern California. Live Interior 3D is a great tool for floorplanning and interior design, whether you’re rebuilding the home you just lost or you’re converting a spare bedroom into an [...]

Your Leopard Love Affair

Written on October 16, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 50 people have commented

Iyaz Akhtar wrote earlier about some of the new features in Leopard, set to debut in nine days. The full list spans over 300 new features — some of them niftier than others.
This is my first major OS X upgrade since I switched (back) to Mac, and it struck me as funny that a [...]

A chink in the AirPort armor?

Written on October 04, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 11 people have commented

Is it possible the AirPort Extreme base station isn’t catching all the malicious traffic bound for my home network? I just opened Console to check on an issue I was having with lookupd, but I was distracted when the ipfw.log firewall log file popped up with quite a lot of blocked attempts.
How many? Try 7831 [...]

Is PowerPC Doomed? Nahhhh

apple.com, 9 May 1998 [via]

Noted blogger and podcaster Daniel Eran Dilger writes today at Roughly Drafted on Leopard and the History and Future of Mac OS X on PowerPC.
For those of you, like our own Stephanie Guertin, who are running on older PPC systems, Dilger lays out why support for the PowerPC isn’t going away [...]

Open Thread Weekend: We answer tech questions, too

Written on September 14, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 46 people have commented

The open thread closes at midnight PDT (UTC -0700). Be sure to get your questions in before then!
Although we at The Apple Blog like to hand down our knowledge and opinions on all things AAPL (sometimes a little too self-righteously, sure, but aren’t bloggers supposed to be snarky and provocative?), the real reason we’re here [...]

Death to QuickTime Pro

Written on September 10, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 32 people have commented

There might have been a good reason, at some point, for Apple to try selling QuickTime Pro. Not that I can remember such a time. While Apple forges new ground constantly in the digital media arena with innovative hardware and software such as the iPhone, iPod, Aperture, and Final Cut, the online store still [...]

eMusic: Now it’s universal

Written on September 07, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 11 people have commented

The big news this week is undoubtedly Apple’s announcement of the new iPod product line and the lower price of the iPhone. With new iPods comes a new version of iTunes — 7.4 in this case — but despite The Steve’s Thoughts On Music and NBC’s very public departure from the iTunes Store, iTunes [...]

TextMate: Power Editing for the Mac

Written on September 07, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 5 people have commented

It’s been covered here on TAB before, but not enough praise can be given to my text editor of choice, TextMate, which garners much appeal for its built-in extensibility thanks to Ruby. With that flexibility, though, comes a small feeling of overwhelming panic, like being five miles out in the ocean with nothing but a [...]

New Airport Extreme/Express update today

Written on August 14, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 44 people have commented

If you’re like me, you’ve had seven (or more) kinds of problems with your Airport Extreme. Maybe today’s update will fix it for you, even though Apple’s description is terse as usual, offering only “general fixes and compatibility updates.”
While you’re at it, don’t forget to pick up last week’s Boot Camp 1.4, which seemed to [...]

Some of those albums also contain exclusive video content for the first 30 days of availability—so get them while the getting’s good.

Video encoding apps go head-to-head

Written on July 26, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 21 people have commented

Macs having the reputation they do for creative endeavors, there are as many (or more) video and audio encoding tools for OS X as their are file formats in which to encode your media. Some of the tools available are free and open-source, but many of it are shareware, donationware, or fully commercial products. How [...]

Share Your iTunes — Simply

Written on July 19, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 5 people have commented

Thanks to innovative software Simplify Media, sharing your killer iTunes library has never been easier. In the good ol’ days before DRM was such a hot topic, libraries could be shared unfettered across the Net. Simplify Media makes that possible once again by allowing users to invite others to browse and stream their iTunes to [...]
