I sold Apple Computers (The SE/30 was a huge deal back then!) for the campus bookstore when I was in college, then I represented Apple in Virginia when they were making a retail push through department stores (remember Performas?). Mike runs his personal web site at PlanetMike.com. He also podcasts about live theatre in the Washington DC area at ShowBizRadio.net, and runs Live365's most popular Christmas music station at ChristmasMusic247.com. Mike's day job is mostly blogging full-time as a stay-at-home blogger, and part-time providing system administrative help to non-profit organizations.

Written on March 05, 2008 by Michael Clark and No one has commented

CNN published an interesting story on Steve Jobs on Sunday The trouble with Steve Jobs. It reveals that Apple’s Chairman and CEO nearly didn’t have surgery for his pancreatic cancer in 2004, other family problems, and looks at his leadership style.
The Steve Jobs adventure: By now it’s one of the most remarkable stories in business. [...]

My Experience with Renting a Movie on iTunes

Written on January 19, 2008 by Michael Clark and 31 people have commented

We received three inches of snow last Thursday, but I wasn’t worried. We had plenty of white supplies (bread, milk, toilet paper) stocked up, so we didn’t have to venture to the grocery store. NetFlix said two DVDs would be delivered that afternoon. So before dinner, I ventured down to the mailbox to retrieve [...]

FastMac Optical Drive Upgrade Kit

Written on December 11, 2007 by Michael Clark and 1 person has commented

I have two older Macs at home, a Powerbook G4-1.5Ghz and an iMac G5-1.8Ghz (both purchased in 2004 and now out of AppleCare). When I was given the opportunity to upgrade the DVD-burner in ether of those machines with the FastMac Optical Drive Upgrade Kit ($149.95), I jumped at the opportunity. Burning CDs or DVDs [...]

Fighting Repetitive Stress Injury

The Problem
About a month ago my right shoulder started feeling really sore. But I kept blogging, typing, programming away. And that night the pain was so bad I couldn’t sleep. My doctor diagnosed bursitis (Dictionary: “Bursitis: inflammation of a bursa, typically one in the knee, elbow or shoulder.”) (Dictionary; “Bursa: a fluid-filled sac or saclike cavity, [...]

iPod shuffle vs. Replacement battery

Written on September 07, 2007 by Michael Clark and 26 people have commented

One of the web sites I write and podcast for involves a fair amount of travel around the Washington DC region. It’s not uncommon to be in the car for eight hours a week traveling to shows. So my wife and I listen to several different podcasts. Unfortunately, my third generation iPod’s battery has finally [...]

June 28th is Get in Line for the iPhone Day

Written on June 04, 2007 by Michael Clark and 10 people have commented

Apple released several commercials on Sunday touting the features of the iPhone. They can be viewed on the Apple web site. “Calamari” shows how to search for local restaurants; “Never Been an iPod” demonstrates album searching, watching videos, and taking a call; and “How To” shows how it works. The fine print near the end [...]

iTunes Soon To Be Missing a Feature

Written on May 17, 2007 by Michael Clark and 15 people have commented

How’s your iTunes doing? Plenty of music on your hard drive? I’ve got 5,550 songs, 29.22 GB. Movies? None yet, DVDs work great for me. TV Shows? A few, generally when I forget to set the VCR. Podcasts? I subscribe to eight of them, listen to them when I’m on the road. Audiobooks? None. Radio [...]

Apple Invites Video Podcasters to Update their Video

Written on April 12, 2007 by Michael Clark and 2 people have commented

Apple has apparently emailed to all podcasters registered with iTunes a note encouraging them to upgrade their video podcasts to at least 640 pixels wide:
Greetings from the iTunes Podcasting Team:
Apple TV is here, and podcasts are making a big move into the living room. We want all of them to look as good as possible, [...]

Security vs. Convenience

Written on March 08, 2007 by Michael Clark and 36 people have commented

My Powerbook’s hard drive died last summer, so when I rebuilt it I set up three users, one as the “Super Duper All Powerful” User, and one for my day job (”mike-work”) and one for my personal stuff (”mike-home”). The Admin user is only used for system upgrades and installing software. I don’t have to [...]

How Apple Thinks

David Sobotta, who was Apple’s national federal sales manager in 2002, writes for The Guardian What Jobs told me on the iPhone. It is an interesting article about how Steve Jobs and Apple think through the viability of a new product line. The article boils down to

Wired News: “Steve Jobs’ Best Year Ever”

Written on December 29, 2006 by Michael Clark and 2 people have commented

Wired News is summarizing 2006 as Steve Jobs’ Best Year Ever. Leander Kahney points out highlights for Apple from each month in 2006. It has been an incredible year, with highs like the Intel Macs, Boot Camp, and new iPods; and lows like the accounting scandal. I totally don’t understand the hype over the iPhone. [...]

Christmas Easter Eggs

Written on December 28, 2006 by Michael Clark and 2 people have commented

After sitting down after a wonderful day of family, feasts and fun, I checked my email. While it was downloading, I opened up my favorite time-waster game, MacIago. Imagine my surprise when Santa appeared superimposed on the board.

Has anyone else stumbled across any other hidden Christmas gems?

Finder Security Bug or Feature?

Written on December 27, 2006 by Michael Clark and 11 people have commented

My Powerbook’s hard drive was filling up. So I used the WhatSize tool to see which directories were using my disk space. I discovered that I could see how much disk space was being used by another user on the computer. My laptop has three users: an admin (which is used only to install system [...]

Are You Sure? Change or OK

Written on December 13, 2006 by Michael Clark and 8 people have commented

One thing I would love to see fixed in Leopard is dialog boxes where the choices don’t quite make sense. For example, when you set up a new Airport Base Station and forget to change the default password this is what you see:

The two choices (Change and OK) really don’t match the question being asked [...]

I use this for tons of stuff, including but not limited to: podcast production (Audacity and iTunes); Office apps (MS Office; InDesign); blogging (Safari); web development (Firefox, PageSpinner, [...]
