Today, on CNN.com I noticed a new online Get A Mac ad that I’ve lovingly named “Surveillance.”

Apple has done these sort of multi-banner ads on large news sites like CNN and NY Times before where the two ads cleverly interact with one another.

In this ad, Mac and PC are talking about Windows 7 and above them a number of surveillance cameras are showing people going in and out of Apple stores presumably switching from PC to Mac. PC can’t stand the thought so he runs to one of the stores and is observed on one of the surveillance cameras stopping people form going in to the Apple store.

The NBA is launching a new iPhone app that will let you watch live NBA games wherever you are (class, work, bathroom…you get the idea). To access the 40+ live games that will be made available each week, you’ll need to shell out $39.99 for the season to get an NBA League Pass Mobile subscription.

Looking for sushi in New York via the Google Maps iPhone app? Hope you like sifting through sponsored links, as Google Maps for the iPhone is now serving up sponsored links.

Obviously Google is in the business of ads, but what threw me off was that the sponsored link info bubble popped up by default right when I did the search (as seen in the screenshot below). Maps is obviously a free app, so I don’t have beef with some ads, but when using a mobile UI, where pixels are already hard to come by, popping up the info bubble by default and taking up precious screen real estate just seems bad form.

Recently the iPhone has become a bit of a playground for augmented reality apps. These apps have been more of a cool thing to show off to your friends than anything all that useful, but Colin Gibbs believe they have a lot of promise (subscription required).

We believe AR will eventually be ubiquitous, perhaps even to the point where users sometimes don’t even consider the differences between the real world and the virtual world. And we believe mobile phones will be the gateway medium for AR, which will eventually find audiences both massive (phones and other connected consumer devices) and tiny (niche applications in health care and enterprise, for example).

Today Steve Jobs made a surprise appearance at the media event and announced iTunes 9. It’s packed full of new features including a major overhaul of the iTunes Store. Read on for details on all the updates.

iTunes LP

One of the downsides of digital music has been the lack of interactivity that you once got from handling album packaging. Apple has brought their own version of this back and its calling it iTunes LP.

iTunes LP is a way to interactive with new content including videos, photos, lyrics, discography, liner notes and more. Many of the LPs were created by the artists themselves.

Home Sharing

Home Sharing makes home networking work for you in that you can now share music, shows, and movies with up to five other authorized computers on you network. Secretly digging that new Britney Spears album your sister bought? Just grab it from her iTunes library and move it to yours. And then promptly punch yourself in the face for every digging Britney Spears.

iTunes Store Redesign

The iTunes store has been needing a facelift for quite a while. And a facelift it most certainly received!

Everything from the home page to artist pages, album pages, TV shows, and movie pages all received a major redesign.

In addition to the redesign is a new feature (one that I’ve wanted since the store debuted) called Wish List…and it’s exactly what you think it is. You can now add albums, songs, movies, shows to your Wish List to check out later and possibly purchase.

Genius Mixes

The iTunes Genius got a bit of an upgrade with a new featured called “Genius Mixes.” Genius Mixes automatically creates up to a dozen mixes of songs that it thinks would go great together.

App Organization

A much requested feature has been the ability to organize apps right in iTunes instead of fumbling through a half dozen screens trying to move tiny icons around with your finger. Now you can do just that.

Overall this is a much needed, and much welcomed update to iTunes and the iTunes Store. What are your favorite updates so far?

The mobile content distribution industry began to undergo a seismic shift last year with the launch of Apple’s App Store, and a host of competitors from across the mobile spectrum are in various stages of following Apple’s lead.

Google was first with Android Market, which is built on an open-source platform backed by a consortium of dozens of key players in wireless. Research In Motion jumped on the bandwagon in recent weeks with its BlackBerry App World, and Microsoft, Nokia and Palm –- among others — are set to launch offerings this year.

Wireless broadband is growing like wildfire. Current estimates are that by the end of the year there could be over 250 million subscribers to HSPA connections (the tech behind 3G wireless broadband).

Apple very briefly mentioned a new HTTP adaptive bitrate streaming technology for QuickTime on desktops and on the iPhone at the WWDC keynote Monday. This development actually has some pretty significant implications for Mac and iPhone users and developers, and our sister site NewTeeVee has the scoop.

Because the new HTTP streaming will support live and on-demand H.264 video play directly within a browser, companies will no longer have to make and sell branded applications for video, as MLB and TV.com do today. It also means a lessening of the impact of AT&T meddling with approval of applications that try to stream over the 3G wireless network.

The adaptive bitrate aspect of the streaming is at the forefront of what other players like Adobe and Microsoft are doing in video. Through new Mac software called Segmenter, video publishers will divide their content into tiny chunks of different qualities that are subbed in for each other when a user’s bandwidth and CPU constraints improve or degrade.
