Powerbook Updates

Written on January 31, 2005 by Dan Lurie and 3 people have commented

Well, Apple has finally updated the Powerbook line. After more than a year since the last upgrade, users expected some substantial speed bumps. What the got is a different story. Instead of the rumored dual-core G4, or dreamed of G5, we got a minimal 1.5ghz increase in speed. However, Apple did add some sorely needed [...]

Mac mini: Bodysnatcher

Written on January 30, 2005 by Twist and 3 people have commented

Some evil x86 geek has taken our beloved Mac mini and desecrated it by putting a Nano-ITX form factor motherboard in it. Poor Mac mini. Please send me the original components so that I may give them a good home

Shuffle Review, Part Deux

Written on January 29, 2005 by Dan Lurie and No one has commented

After a long day of playing with my new toy, I have a few gripes. Small as they may seem, they are substantial enough to consider possible iModification. The first shortcoming I noticed was that when working in indirect sunlight, on overcast days, the feedback LED’s are almost impossible to see. This isn’t much of [...]

Best Buy to sell the Mac Mini? No question about it.

Written on January 29, 2005 by Rich Trouton and No one has commented

Best Buy now has the 1.25GHz Mac Mini and the 1.42GHz Mac Mini now listed for pre-ordering up on their online store. Best Buy’s site also notes that its stores will soon begin selling Apple’s 512MB iPod shuffle–but not the 1GB iPod shuffle. Both models are available online. Best Buy had previously been selling Apple’s [...]

The Mac Media Center Project

Written on January 28, 2005 by Adam and 1 person has commented

The Mac Media Center Project, an open source project to develop a complete media center interface for the Mac mini, launched this past week. There’s already links up for how to connect all your A/V hardware (also see Engadget’s how-to for more on that), but the crux of the project is developing integrated software to [...]

iPod Shuffle Review

Written on January 28, 2005 by Dan Lurie and 5 people have commented

I finally got my 1GB Shuffle today. The nice FedEx man dropped off a huge box. (huge relative to the size of the shuffle its self). Upon opening said box, I was confronted with 4 things:
1 iPod Shuffle box; approx the size of 4 jewel cases stacked on top of each other.
1 plastic bag [...]

Best Buy to sell the Mac Mini?

Written on January 28, 2005 by Rich Trouton and No one has commented

(Hat tip: MacNN)
Chalk this one up to still being a rumor, but one I think is in line with Apple’s “iPod halo” marketing strategy. According to a report released by Merril Lynch, Best Buy may begin selling Macs again. The analyst firm said that the consumer electronic retailer could begin to sell Macs–specifically the Mac [...]

apple_g5_powerbook

Written on January 27, 2005 by Nick Santilli and 2 people have commented

In a story run by both The Register and Gizmodo, Apple apparently had a snippet of HTML that included the reference to “apple_g5_powerbook” on it’s powerbook page.

It’s gone from Apple’s site now (The Register reports it being gone within an hour of their finding it). The code referenced a 1 by 1 pixel place-holder [...]

UPDATE: Mac Mini Upgrade Price-drop

Written on January 27, 2005 by Nick Santilli and 2 people have commented

As we reported recently, some of the Mac Mini customization options have been lowered in price a mere 2 weeks after it’s release to market.
Well rest assured (if you’re one of the folks who bought and upgraded early), Apple will be refunding the difference in price between what you paid, and what is now being [...]

Written on January 26, 2005 by Nick Santilli and No one has commented

The DLO iDirect Remote Control for iPod will set you back $50, but will also set you back away from your iPod with full control of its music.
There’s a small IR adapter that fits into the headphone jack - resembling the size of the iTrip from Griffin - and then a small palm sized remote [...]

Daniel Kushner has dissected the iPod Shuffle…literally. He explains in detail the inner workings of the Shuffle with fun pictures to go along with it. An interesting read indeed.

(Hat tip: AppleInsider)
Target has pulled the Mac Mini from the Target.com website, four days after listing it as a purchasable item. In response to customer emails about the sudden disapperance, Target cited availability concerns as the sole factor that prompted it to remove the product from its store.

Mac Based Media Centers

Written on January 25, 2005 by Twist and 1 person has commented

Seems everybody and their dog wants to use a Mac mini as a media center, I know I do. Currently there are a few solution out there for doing this, most of the best ones from El Gato. Gadget site galore Engadget posted a how-to on this earlier.
Needing to buy two different devices from El [...]

Mac Mini’s Already Cheaper to Custom Order

Written on January 25, 2005 by Nick Santilli and 4 people have commented

The Apple Store has dropped pricing of it’s custom components for the Mac Mini.
1GB Ram now down to $325
80GB Hard drive down to $50
Wireless combo of Bluetooth and Airport Extreme down to $99
Also, the superdrive option is now an 8x offering rather than the previous 4x.
My guess is (and this is probably way obvious) that [...]

They are selling the systems for the low low price of $1220.50. Make note of one of the headings in the product description: “Inexpensive, But Never Cheap” (maybe [...]

Is Apple Working on a DVR/VOD solution?

Written on January 19, 2005 by Chris Holland and 2 people have commented

Om Malik points to a post by Jonathan Greene speculating about an alleged upcoming DVR/Video-on-Demand solution from Apple.
I’ve not seen anyone mention DRM as part of the picture. Or has this already been figured out by Netflix through a subscription model? Would one be able to buy movies or just temporarily “rent them”? Would renting [...]

Noise reduction headphones: Block out everything but the music.

Written on January 17, 2005 by Rich Trouton and 4 people have commented

While at MacWorld Expo, my fiancee’s goal was to find a good set of noise reduction headphones for her iPod Mini. She rides the Washington Metro to work every day and it’s a fairly noisy environment, where she found herself constantly raising and lowering the volume of the music. She wanted headphones where she could [...]

Apple In Ear Headphones

Written on January 16, 2005 by Josh Pigford and 4 people have commented

A quick note on Apple’s In Ear Headphones, many people have bought them and quickly came to the conclusion that they were horrifically bad.
However, the secret is that you just have to shove these things right IN your ears (not too far, I’m not trying to cause any injuries here). Once the malleable plastic is [...]

Travelling with the Aiport Express.

One thing I did when I was planning my trip to MacWorld was plan for how I was going to handle internet access in the hotel room. I’d stayed at the King George Hotel off of Union Square before for WWDC and had liked it, so I was going to stay there again this time [...]
