Spore Origins Released For iPod

Written on September 03, 2008 by Josh Pigford and 3 people have commented

All of the gaming love seems to have been directed at iPhone and iPod touch users for the past few months so it’s only fair that “regular” iPod owners get a piece of the pie.
Tricky Software has released Spore Origins. It’s currently only available for iPod nano (3rd generation), iPod classic and iPod (5th generation).
Using [...]

Microsoft Joins the App Store Party

Written on September 02, 2008 by Jethro Jones and No one has commented

There have been apps available on Windows Mobile for as long as I can remember it being in existence. When I had a Dell Axiom PocketPC in 2003, not only was I the coolest kid on the block, but I also had plenty of applications at my fingertips. I put a lot of games [...]

Software Updates & New Release Highlights For Week Ending 2008-08-23

Written on August 25, 2008 by Bob Rudis and 1 person has commented

Yet again, an Apple update steals the show with the release of iPhone OS 2.0.2. Strangely enough, you may have been a recipient of the following text message (ostensibly from Apple) even if you upgraded:

For a release that just “fixed bugs,” I find it difficut to believe that the motivation behind the SMS (if it [...]

Written on August 21, 2008 by Bob Rudis and No one has commented

The UK security consulting firm Corsaire has just published a new whitepaper on securing Mac OS X Leopard (you may remember them from their similar Tiger whitepaper). Written by Corsaire’s head of training – Daniel Cuthbert (whom you may remember as being in a fairly public and silly court case a few years back and [...]

The fine folks in Redmond have released Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.2 update which includes stability and performance enhancements for Office 2008, Office 2008 Home and Student Edition, Office 2008 Special Media Edition, Word 2008, Excel 2008, PowerPoint 2008, and Entourage 2008. In addition, this fixes several vulnerabilities, some of which may allow an [...]

My Holy Grail Of iPhone Apps Arrives: pTerm

Written on August 08, 2008 by Bob Rudis and 17 people have commented

Just this week I was posing the question of where are all the (no-jailbreak-required) ssh/terminal apps for the iPhone? While not the best platform for such a tool (the keyboard would – and does, as you will see – eat up some serious real estate), the platform has enough processing power to handle such [...]

I Am Rich: Proof that Apple doesn’t do any quality control with the App Store

Written on August 05, 2008 by Josh Pigford and 21 people have commented

What more can I say, the fact that this application is live in the App Store proves Apple couldn’t possibly do more than have a drone sitting in a cubicle hitting “Approve” on new apps for the App Store.
I present to you I Am Rich.
I think the big problem here is that Apple has touted [...]

Sun Posts StarOffice 9 Beta For OS X

Written on August 05, 2008 by Bob Rudis and 7 people have commented

Sun Microsystems posted a beta version of StarOffice 9 today (based on OpenOffice). The 183MB download gives you a disk image that contains an application you just copy into your Applications folder (no icky/cumbersome installer). Upon first launch, it prompts you to read the license agreement and asks for some basic user information. Unfortunately, it [...]

iPhone OS 2.0.1 Available With a Truckload of “Bug Fixes”

Written on August 04, 2008 by Josh Pigford and 18 people have commented

This evening Apple made iPhone OS 2.0.1 available via iTunes.
Frequently Apple doesn’t include a lot of information on what software updates actually fix, but this could be on of the most cryptic of all.
This update simply says the update includes “Bug Fixes”…247MB of “bug fixes” to be exact.
Now that isn’t an additional 247MB of space [...]

Find a carpool buddy with Carticipate

Written on August 03, 2008 by Josh Pigford and 8 people have commented

With gas prices costing an arm and a leg these days, people have found that carpooling is a great way to cut down on costs. Trouble is, it’s not always that easy to find a group of people that are traveling to your general destination.
Thankfully, with the iPhone’s location aware capabilities and the release [...]

This weekend was the 2nd annual iPhoneDevCamp held, mostly, in San Francisco. iPhoneDevCamp is a 3 day event where iPhone/iPod touch developers get together to learn and develop with other developers and this year seems to have churned out one of the most highly requested features for the iPhone and iPod touch.
Andrew Mager posted a [...]

Psystar Lawyers-up With Some Experience

Written on July 31, 2008 by Jethro Jones and 4 people have commented

Psystar has officially decided to not go down without a fight. They requested more time to respond to the suit brought forth by Apple and are represented by lawyers from the firm Carr & Ferrell, ComputerWorld reports. They have until August 18th, if this motion is approved, to respond to the claims, which is a [...]

Software Updates & New Release Highlights For Week Ending 2008-07-26

Written on July 30, 2008 by Bob Rudis and 3 people have commented

It’s been a rough couple of weeks (MacBook Pro was in the shop again) and I’m just getting caught up on some of the updates (again, I use or try these, so it’s not just a product listing/announcement summary). So, convince me to test your app and you can make it to this list!

New MacBook Rumors

Written on July 29, 2008 by Jethro Jones and 18 people have commented

Last week, during the Q2 financial call for Apple, Peter Oppenheimer does what Apple does best: he stirred the pot. It may seem to the untrained eye that Apple’s less-than-stellar four-product launch was detrimental to the company, but how quickly we forget. Just a few short words left all the bad feelings behind and kept [...]

Apple Joins 21st Century, Starts Blogging it out, Kind of

Written on July 27, 2008 by Jethro Jones and 2 people have commented

Those oh-so-familiar green (and red) status indicators from the old .Mac status page are a thing of the past, or at least so it seems. After 14 days of intense frustration caused by MobileMe, Apple decided it was time to put a little Public Relations effort into solving the communication problem. Some person, unnamed, has [...]

I had the opportunity to attend the July 10th meeting of Seattle Xcoders (a local group where Mac OS X Cocoa programmers can connect) that featured Wil Shipley giving a talk on his latest initiative - Golden % Braeburn.
Golden % Braeburn is a company that has been setup to license the storefront used to sell [...]

C-61 in 61 Seconds

Written on July 21, 2008 by Jethro Jones and 1 person has commented

About a month ago, we mentioned the danger in taking your iPod, iPhone, or Mac across the northern border into Canada. Now there is a ground swell led by Michael Geist, a lawyer, blogger, columnist, and professor at the University of Ottowa opposing Bill C-61:
Canadian Industry Minister Jim Prentice introduced Bill C-61, which many have [...]

Apple makes amends with MobileMe users

Written on July 16, 2008 by Nick Mediati and 12 people have commented

Let’s face it, MobileMe’s first few days of life have been, well, difficult. It was problematic from the start, with the transition from .mac to MobileMe taking well over 24 hours, as opposed to the planned 6-hour outage. And when the web apps did go online, even though they were a step in the right [...]

Apple to Psystar: It is Over.

Written on July 16, 2008 by Jethro Jones and 9 people have commented

Now that Apple has gotten over the stress of selling the iPhone 3G, they have turned their attention to other matters that are not as pressing as the activation fiasco.
Apple sued Psystar on July 3rd (when everyone was too busy worrying about the iPhone launch) and asked that all the computers that Psystar [...]
