Amazon MP3 Walkthrough

Written on October 09, 2007 by Josh Pigford and 17 people have commented

Amazon recently launched a really great effort in the digital music arena called Amazon MP3. I’ve been a hardcore iTunes Store customer since it’s debut and haven’t really been tempted by other digital music stores. That is, until Amazon MP3 made its debut.

Timex iPod Alarm Clock

Written on September 21, 2007 by Nick Santilli and 2 people have commented

I’m not all that picky when it comes to alarm clocks. Essentially it passes my rigorous test if the display doesn’t light up my room while I sleep, and the default buzzer doesn’t stop my heart when it goes off in the morning. But I suppose after using the Timex Ti700 for a [...]

TextMate: Power Editing for the Mac

Written on September 07, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 5 people have commented

It’s been covered here on TAB before, but not enough praise can be given to my text editor of choice, TextMate, which garners much appeal for its built-in extensibility thanks to Ruby. With that flexibility, though, comes a small feeling of overwhelming panic, like being five miles out in the ocean with nothing but a [...]

iLap - Keep your lap cool

Written on September 04, 2007 by Josh Pigford and 6 people have commented

Let’s be honest, sitting in a chair or on a couch with a laptop sitting directly on your legs is just…painful. After extended periods of time the heat from the laptop just gets uncomfortable for everybody involved.
Previously I’ve just ended up sitting at a table or putting a book or something of the sort under [...]

Booq Vyper exo Laptop Bag Review

Written on August 31, 2007 by Josh Pigford and 9 people have commented

Back in March I sold my G5 tower in favor of the mobile life and have been using a 17″ MacBook Pro since then.
There are a plethora of bags/totes/backpacks/etc for traveling with your laptop so there was a pretty big sea of things to chose from. I’ve tried a few different bags over the past [...]

iPhone Headphone Adapter Roundup

Written on August 30, 2007 by Brandon Eley and 34 people have commented

iPhone users quickly found out that the headphone jack on the iPhone is recessed several millimeters and standard headphones won’t fit in the jack.
Belkin Adapter
The first company to release an adapter was Belkin, but the adapter is rigid, ugly and looks like a 3″ antennae sticking out of the top of your iPhone. The adapter [...]

Apple Numbers Gallery

Written on August 08, 2007 by Josh Pigford and 20 people have commented

Yesterday Apple announced and released its much anticipated spreadsheet application called Numbers.
Numbers is described as “spreadsheets the Mac way,” with the application offering significantly more functionality past just simply charting information and numbers. It’s a solid mixture of information organization, number calculation, and page layout/design.
The interface for numbers if very intuitive and is very easy [...]

Video encoding apps go head-to-head

Written on July 26, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 21 people have commented

Macs having the reputation they do for creative endeavors, there are as many (or more) video and audio encoding tools for OS X as their are file formats in which to encode your media. Some of the tools available are free and open-source, but many of it are shareware, donationware, or fully commercial products. How [...]

Share Your iTunes — Simply

Written on July 19, 2007 by Billy Halsey and 5 people have commented

Thanks to innovative software Simplify Media, sharing your killer iTunes library has never been easier. In the good ol’ days before DRM was such a hot topic, libraries could be shared unfettered across the Net. Simplify Media makes that possible once again by allowing users to invite others to browse and stream their iTunes to [...]

Moody: Mood tag your tunes

Written on July 18, 2007 by Josh Pigford and 13 people have commented

For the past month or so I’ve been using Crayon Room’s Moody app almost religiously. It’s just so good.
Moody lets you tag your iTunes music based on color with “upper red” being for sad-intense music and “lower green” being for happy-calm music. There’s no right or wrong way to tag a tune, so it’s [...]

TechTool Pro 4 Review: OS X Utility Suite

Written on July 15, 2007 by Jason Guthrie and 9 people have commented

TechTool Pro has always been known as a big player in the community of Mac utilities, but has maintained its unique approach to combining an extremely powerful program with a very user-friendly interface.
Unfortunately for utility developers, OS X is a fairly robust system and doesn’t need a lot of monitoring or performance tweaks (in my [...]

PackRat: Take your Backpack offline

Written on June 12, 2007 by Josh Pigford and 2 people have commented

So I’m a fairly hardcore Backpack (aff) user. I use it heavily for both business and personal things and I’d bit a disorganized mess without it.
Unfortunately, as with most web applications, when you’re disconnected from the internet (whether traveling or just having trouble finding a connection), it becomes unusable for obvious reasons.
Enter PackRat.
PackRat is [...]

Game Time: Ante Up With Imagine Poker

Written on May 14, 2007 by Louis Gray and 3 people have commented

After bumping into the World Series of Poker (WSOP) a bajillion times on late-night sports channels, I wanted to find an easy way to hone my skills in Texas Hold ‘Em, without having to lose my shirt (and money) at Vegas or my dignity among friends who knew the game.
Imagine Poker from Candywriter lets me [...]

Spire Endo XL

Written on April 23, 2007 by Josh Pigford and 7 people have commented

Spire has always been a favorite of ours. They make solid bags that are lightweight yet still extremely functional.
I’ve been using the Endo XL for a few weeks now and it really has just about everything I could need. What makes it so great is that it is built to carry significantly more items [...]

Mac Podcatcher Roundup

Written on March 30, 2007 by Iyaz Akhtar and 4 people have commented

I have been on a search for the perfect podcatcher for some time now. I watch video podcasts as an alternative to traditional television programming since I have a Mac mini connected to my television. I choose the larger versions of video files because they look better on a television.
I first tried out [...]

Serial Number Storage Roundup

Written on March 28, 2007 by Josh Pigford and 17 people have commented

There has been recent discussion around here about how folks keep track of the plethora of serial numbers and licenses for all their dandy applications.
Everything from homegrown PHP/MySQL solutions to old fashioned email to actual applications was mentioned. Needless to say there are some creative people who read TAB.
This post aims to roundup all of [...]

Life With Apple TV: The First 48 Hours

Written on March 26, 2007 by Louis Gray and 20 people have commented

Remember how I said “I Want My Apple TV”? Well, it came. And I’ve been trying it out all weekend. After a false start on Friday, where I had tried to connect an HDMI cable from the Apple TV device to my TV set, only to find out the TV set didn’t have an HDMI [...]

Mvix: An Apple TV Alternative

Written on March 23, 2007 by Iyaz Akhtar and 17 people have commented

The people over at Mvix, makers of the Mvix MX-760HD (a Linux-based wireless media center), have done a comparison of their product and the gadget of the moment, the Apple TV.
For those of you looking for a media center or media center extender device, the Mvix is a great alternative to the Apple TV. [...]
