How developed is the 3G network in the US (and in particular around your area)? If you don't have very good coverage any future 3G iPhone is going to be communicating mostly in 2G mode, so you may as well go ahead and buy one now.
I suspect new phones may not come out until as late as October, that's purely speculation on my part, but I'm thinking Apple will probably introduce new models for the holiday season. In the meantime with the software upgrades in June and 3rd party developments there'll be plenty of iPhone activity.
As far as I know, version 2 of the software will work on existing phones, so you won't be locked out of any of the new features, although there may be a small charge to upgrade.
