I installed RC5.1 a few days ago and the preference pane didn't work. Reason is that the data folder is not associated with your user so you need to chmod it and voila works 100% again. If you're not comfortable with chmod then do it from Finder. You'll need to double click the lock first, enter root password and then change it.
