Unfortunately, I'm stupid and that fix was only for playback compatibility. To get the file into iMovie you need it in .dv format, which the free MPEG Streamclip or the simpler shareware DropDV will do for you.

Open your .dom file, and select File>Export to DV...

Not the prettiest fix, but it (supposedly) works.
