Hi Everyone,
I'm one of the unfortunate Canadians who will likely not see the iPhone released until 2008. Now that's obviously speculation, but a few months ago we were looking at possibly a November release, but it doesn't seem to be happening. However now there's the iPod Touch which we'll definately have and I think I'm gonna get one. And I figure it's not so bad because there are other great phones coming out and to have two separate devices is fine. BUT...I have to admit the iPhone is so much much better in every aspect (clearly they down-graded the design slightly on the touch purposely), it's like settling for 2nd best when you could've gotten the the best for the same price. Then again, all the extra charges that go along with owning an iPhone puts me off a bit. But since Rogers doesn't seem to be making any progress with Apple, it doesn't look like there's much of a choice to make. And how crazy is it that the UK has iPhone before Canada?? Once again Canada is way behind on mobile phone technology. Apple does seem choosy about who they work with though, so I think Rogers is screwing up somehow....anyway, what do you guys think? BTW, I'm the new GIRL not GUY, lol. |

Hey Crys009,
First of all, welcome to the TAB community! It's great to have another Canadian! That said, I'm in the same position as you in a way. I'm going to be a definite patron of the 2nd gen iPhone, once it's released (as you said, I'm expecting a 2008 Canadian release, which would probably be fairly close to the 2nd gen iPhone release anyways) but there's always the option of having a multi-touch device now. So, what do I recommend? If you need a new iPod (or really desire the multi-touch), I'd suggest that you look further into the iPod Touch. If you can wait, I'd more strongly recommend that, as it's what I'll be doing. The UK also got the video store before us as well. It seems kind of crazy but I don't begrudge the UK anything. They definitely get shafted when it comes to video games, of which I'm a big consumer.

Why not get an iPhone now and unlock it? It works and all you lose is visual voice mail, which you can gain through legit activation when the iPhone makes it to Canada.
Ans the way a carrier is screwing up to not get in bed with Apple is probably by not giving Apple a big enough cut of contracts.

I know exactly how you feel..!
I am a brit living in Chile. I would do anything for an iphone but Latin America wont be getting them until the asia market... so 2010 at least! My family living in the UK are going to help me out and send over an ipod touch in a few weeks (as this also wont be getting here for a few months more). I hear a lot of talk on the net about unblocking, and it seems to be going well... ... it is just imagine you buy the thing, then along comes a firmware update and locks you out. Your whole investment in a phone that suddenly doesn't work. I would be gutted, wouldn't you? |

Some interesting things to consider, thanks for the replies! Unclocking the iPhone was always in the back of my mind, but then honestly I'd rather wait for a carrier. I'm just banging my head against the wall thinking how in the world did the release of iPhone in Canada get screwed up??? It boggles the mind. However as Yuiichi said, if we end up getting the second gen iPhone in the end, there's another reason to wait. Which brings me to the thing that plagues Apple fans, and it's we know there's something better coming out very soon. I mean, go with any other company and have an "older" product of theirs, and nobody cares, lol. Even if I go with the iPod Touch, I'm thinking there's gotta be an update in terms of capacity next year. But, it's so hard to wait
. Anyway, thanks again everyone, I've got some decisions to make... |
