You can't have too much backup! In addition to my external "G" drive, I have a second 500 GB internal that is used for my Time Machine.

I don't keep my backup drive on my desk because it's loud, big, and rather ugly. I just pull it out every couple of days, let it back up, and then stick it where it's out of sight. Maybe if it was pretty, quiet, small, and I had a nook/cranny for it, I'd have it out, but I don't

I've got a 750 gigger for my lossless audio files, a 500 gigger for my video files, and a 300 gigger for my Time Machine backups. I've also got a portable 100 gigger.

I don't seem to have posted to this thread (unless I missed myself). I just ordered a new display today though (I couldn't resist the pricing on the dell E248WFP with a Humanscale M7 TFT Mount), so I will add some [new] images when that arrives. I hope it won't be long. That said, I kinda work at 3 or 4 desks throughout the week, so I might try and post different ones. For now, I am sticking to the sofa and the garden. Very nice.

@notabadname: I love the size of your desk! I thought my desk at home was big. I also have a desk at work which is huge, really huge. It's actually a custom made thing and not particularly well done. It's just a huge piece of wood which is attached in between my U shaped work benches to make more of a W. It is at standing height though and my chair won't pump up far enough anymore

I live by my backups. I have two externals on my desk, both 500gb myBooks, one of which handles Time Machine backups and all files that I don't want on the laptop's internal drive. The other one (which you almost can't see in that picture, as it's black and stuck right next to the silver one) is an external music library that's shared over the network.
I have important files (my thesis and data, heh) backed up on, at last count, six physical drives and two externally-managed servers (a friend's, and Amazon S3). There will be no 'dog ate my homework' for me!

@Yuiichi - You should look into the myBooks re: big loud and ugly. Even with two, they're whisper-quiet, conveniently stackable, and I at least think they're not bad looking. Not to shill 'em or anything, but I'm so much happier with them than any previous externals I've used that it's not even funny.

You know, I only bought the external I have right now because the MyBooks were out of stock and I needed a backup drive right then. I, too, think they're really good looking and it's nice to know that they're quiet, as one of my biggest complaints about the one that I have now is that it's just so loud. I'll be sure to get one as a replacement as soon as some disposable income presents itself Thanks for the advice!

I remember those days from doing my dissertation. I had backups everywhere. On my webspace, my iPod, my thumb drive, my email, my parents computer 150miles away. I wasn't gonna lose it! The paranoia makes me chuckle!

I thought I'd show off my new display, even if it's only an out of the box test situation on a workbench in "The Dungeon" at work. I have brought it home now but it's not set up properly as yet. I really need to decorate!

@houltmac: Thanks! Speaking of big, I love your new monitor. I keep holding out for an update to the ACD to replace my seemingly small 20". It runs out of screen room quickly, especially if you do any video editing - just too many pallets to fit on 20". I think I may give up on the Apple wait soon.

@johnnaryry: Your set up instantly reminded me of the control center on the "Nebuchadnezzar " in the "Matrix". Cool
