Just so everyone knows, Yazsoft decided to give out free Speed Download 5 licenses to to purchasers of the MacHeist bundle. For those who don't know: a new version was released weeks after the MacHeist bundle sale closed. This version did not accept MacHeist serials. I was disappointed, but was happy to see they gave in and did what was right.

I never understood what the purpose of a download manager was really. It seems like an extra step that's just not needed. But, what caught my attention with Speed Download was the revamped FTP within the app.
I'm always looking for a faster FTP app. Transmit is too slow, Yummy FTP (what I've been using) has the best speed. Flow shows great potential for being the fastest, but it won't be ready anytime soon. Surprisingly, I've done a couple quick tests with Speed Download vs Yummy FTP and speed download is winning every time. I've only tested downloads right now, but ex. 40MB file downloaded 9 seconds faster with Speed Download. 9 whole seconds! Yes, I am a nerd. More on the upload tests later.

FYI - I gave up on Speed Download. It was actually performing the better (speed wise) than Yummy FTP, Transmit, and Cyberduck. I didn't test it against Flow. But, regardless it is one clunky app to use for FTP purposes. The way Speed Download acts and handles the download/upload process is so bad I gave up on it. It now resides in my application folder, unused, waiting until the next time I get AppZapperHappy.
On a side note. Flow, the incredibly cool, mac like, fast as ever, FTP app is out of beta and coming this Friday.
