Just double-click on an compressed file (.zip, .tgz, etc.) and the built-in BOMArchiveUtility will unzip the files for you and place them in a folder in the location of the compressed file.

Although BOMArchiveUtility is fairly good in most situations, there are times where you just get a weird compressed file that it won't handle. I suggest you try The Unarchiver - a free app that is much more capable than BOMArchiveUtility. It's used in exactly the same way - just double-click the archived file and it will go to work.

Hope this helps!

Great recommendation. The Unarchiver is worth keeping around in case you encounter a tricky file. The built in BOMArchiveUtility will be fine for 95% of your files.

i use a program called zipeg that seems to be working alright for me and extracts .rar archives that i believe BOMArchiveUtility will not. Although i cant say if its better or worse than the unarchiver as i haven't tried that out... another option for you at the least

I use zipeg when I need to get some files out of an archive but not all. Other than that, BOMArchiveUtility and The Unarchiver for any formats BOMA doesn't handle.

I use UnRarX. It works well.
