I am having a very difficult time trying to burn a DVD that I made through imovie and idvd '08. The problem is that the audio fades in and out in what seems to be a random way. It will play audio for a minute and then be muted for a minute throughout the whole video. I have made many before with no problems and can't think of anything that I did differently this time. I used only music from itunes (I saw previous posts that advise trying to save music in other formats but can't figure out how to do that). It plays perfectly with the audio in both imovie and idvd and I saved a disk image and its messed up. The only thing that is weird about this movie is that I made a slideshow from my pictures from iphoto and for some reason the songs that I put in it won't play, even in imovie. Does that indicate anything? Also, it is a very large movie (4.35 GB in Best Performance mode), though I burned it in High Quality and it still didn't work. I read a post that suggested removing quicktime plug-in files from the library to the desktop and that didn't help. Any other suggestions please?

Have you tried multiple brands of discs? It is theoretically possible a bad disc could cause data loss.

Well, actually I have saved it as a disk image and the same exact audio problem was there as on the DVD disk. It's weird because the audio is fine on imovie and iDVD when I preview it but converting it to be burned (not burning) is the problem. The only weird thing about the movie is that I have a slideshow made from pictures from iphoto and i put two songs on it and they do not play. Could that be something?

Thanks in advance for helping. This is very enigmatic to me as I have burned multiple DVDs without a single problem and then all of a sudden I get this...

Hmm. An archive and install might fix. It would be a lot quicker than trying a million different potential fixes.

I was afraid you were going to say that. I actually bought my computer used without the OS disks.

For anyone reading this thread, never, ever, ever, EVER do that. Should anything ever happen to the computer, such as a hard drive failure or a software problem like this, you've got nothing to do but buy an OS disc. Nate, thats what I recommend. Buy a Leopard DVD. Get it legally. You wouldn't buy a house without receiving the deed. So don't buy a computer without the OS disc. It ends up you now have to pay the $129 you saved because the seller didn't have the discs. In the end, it won't have saved you much money, if any.

OK, OK. I get it. I know. I'm a cheapo and it sometimes comes back to bite you in the end. But isn't there anything I can do short of buying a new OS? And is even buying a new OS even a gaurantee? Are you sure that this would solve my problem?

One can never tell for sure if a fix will fix your problem, as there are so many variables involved. But, chances are, an archive and install will fix it. Also, you've really got nothing to lose, as you'll need the OS DVD at some point.

If you're a current student, you'll get a pretty sweet discount, so it'll be significantly less than the $129. Just a tip.

Can you explain what you mean, Yuiichi? Why would I eventually need the "OS DVD"? Is this different from the iDVD '08 that I already have?

An OS DVD stands for an Operating System DVD, such as the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD. You'd eventually need this for issues like the one you're currently having - you can't perform an archive and install without it. It's generally good practice to have one for the rare situation in which you need it.

Does this explain it better?
