I am planning to buy my wife a new IMac to replace her old, tired, overtaxed Imac. She has been waiting for Leopard to be released, and I'm wondering if it's worth waiting, given (1) we don't really know when it'll be coming, and (2) we don't really know what all it will offer. Is there any chance it will be released in connection with Macworld?

Thanks for any advice.

Probably won't be, but you never know. But considering that you will know for sure in 17 hours when Steve is done knocking our socks off, I would definitely wait the 17 hours! You will then know exactly how long it is going to be to wait it out. And as a point of note, if you buy a machine when 10.5 first comes out, you are going to get a drop in disc and have to install Leopard yourself. The only reason I mention this is that there is no advantage to waiting for Leopard with the exception of saving the $140. So if $140 for a machine 3 months sooner is reasonable to you (would be to me), then you should buy now.

Of course my biggest hope for MacWorld is that Steve's big surprise is that 10.5 starts shipping next Monday, then you would be all set!

So in the least, sit tight and your two points will both be answered in less than 17 hours.

I see you're in Dallas. I live about 90 miles away, and we were planning to buy at one of the Apple Stores there. The main advantage being that there'd be a place that knows what a Mac is if we need to bring it in to be worked on.

Any suggestions as to where to go to buy?

I doubt it will ship at Macworld. Nevertheless, wait until the Stevenote, as we might see a release date or some new features.

I'd wait at least to see what happens today. They may give a release date or heck, they may release Leopard today. You never know the way MacWorld's have gone in the past...

I've been wanting to upgrade too and have been holding off for at least MacWorld just to see. You'd hate to buy a new mac today and then find they released an upgraded version soon after at MacWorld.

There are 3 Apple Stores now: Willow Bend Mall in far north Plano, Knox Street in Highland Park (the original Dallas Apple store) and the new North Park Mall store. The Knox store has the best true stock and the most senior employees who know what they are doing. I live 5 minutes from them and unless circumstances dictate otherwise I always go there. If one store gets stock first, it is Knox. But all three are good Apple stores so if you live north of here, it would be best to go to the Plano store as it is a half hour closer. Other wise the Northpark and Knox stores are 10 minutes from one another. Northpark is the better place to go for education as they have a learning center, I suggest Knox for availability and service. And if at all possible, I highly recommend going to either on a weekday as they are both packed and crazy on the weekends. If you are going to one on the weekend, Northpark is the last place that you want to go.

My biggest hope as well, "and you can pick it up from our stores or order them online as of today." Oh well, I knew it was ridiculously hopeful!

I was expecting some Leopard news also in the keynote!
I was astonished when it ended without a mention... Haven't they said it would be ready by January?
Well there's still time, but I wouldn't wait for it. If you do, it may be next another event and you will wait for some iMac upgrade and so on :P

The lack of Leopard mention probably means one of two things:

1) Leopard will be released very soon, in less than a month
2) Leopard is behind schedule, and will be released when it was promised, or possibly later.
