Hi,

I just purchased a JVC everio camcoder which produces .MOD and .MOI files. I tried to import these files onto my new iMac and found out that the software program iMovie is not importing the files and also can not read the files. I do use no firewire but a normal USB cable. Could this be the problem??

From Wikipedia:

"MOD is also the file extension for the video file format used on many camcorders, such as the JVC Everio, and the Panasonic D-Snap SD-card camcorders.

It appears that you can just rename the MOD file extension to MPG as it appears to be a standard MPEG-2 file. Then the file is compatible with players and other software tools that can read Dolby AC-3 Surround Stereo encoding."

In other words, those files are normal mpegs with silly proprietary extensions. I'd still keep a copy on the camera or make a backup just to make sure changing the file extension works.

Hi,

I tried to change the extension after I had copied the file to my desktop. Unfortunately this did not help. Do you think I should use Final Cut software instead of the iMovie software?

Unfortunately, I'm stupid and that fix was only for playback compatibility. To get the file into iMovie you need it in .dv format, which the free MPEG Streamclip or the simpler shareware DropDV will do for you.

Open your .dom file, and select File>Export to DV...

Not the prettiest fix, but it (supposedly) works.

Final Cut also uses QuickTime, so it won't do any better than iMovie. Also, for you, spending the cash for Final Cut is wayyy overkill.

Have a look on the site http://www.convertmod.com
You can find there a software utility for JVC Everio camcorders that convert .mod and .tod files automatically
