@Perpetualskeptic: I have tried Crossover, however only for productivity apps and the like. It didn't work well, if at all, and not much seems to be supported. I think the idea is fantastic, but the right team to pull it off is already working hard on Parallels and Fusion.

Gah! My house is no longer Vista free, we had an older XP machine that was used mostly for web surfing by my mum and brother since I switched to OS X but that farted a while back and decided it didn't want to work anymore.

I finally got fed up of people asking to borrow my laptop to go on the internet (I've no problem with people using it but they would always ask JUST as I had picked it up to use myself) so I popped over the eBuyer and picked up a £140 Vista machine.
Acer Extensa E210 Desktop, Amd Sempron 3800+ 2.2ghz 512mb 160gb Ati Radeon X1200 Graphics Hdd, Dvd-rw Drive, 5in1 Card Reader, Keyboard & Mouse Vista Home Basic - Ebuyer

To be fair, for £140 (£160 when I'd stuck another gig of ram in) it works fine and at that price I wasn't paying £80 to downgrade to XP Pro. Vista is certainly not as hassle-free as OS X but there's not much that kind of money can buy you computer-wise these days, certainly not for a brand new system.

I did have a quick scout around on eBay for a second hand imac g3 to possibly fill the gap but I'm not regretting going the route I chose......... yet.

Actually, that's a desktop

But ... eh ... I wish you luck with that, soapy. I've heard nothing but bad things about Acer computers, but mostly laptops. Hope you don't have any issues with it!

Man, how does Vista run on that thing? I had a Dell in my workshop the other week with as .4GHz C2D, RAID 0 and 2GB RAM... ran like a slug.
