It's interesting thining forward about this time of thing. I do think we will laugh at CD's, but I have a feeling that Vinyl will remain as the nostalgic form of music. I'm thinking of buying the new Coldplay album on vinyl purely for the artwork. I have the stumbling block of my record decks (I used to DJ) being at my parents and no space to set them up here.

There's also the notion of digital media not having the sound quality that analogue forms like vinyl have. Vinyl gives the richest sound as it covers the widest frequency, most people can't tell though and say vinyl has worse sound quality because of the pops and crack you (occasionally) get while it plays.

The pops and cracks give Vinyl a form of personality in my opinion (if that makes any lick of sense)

Absolutely. It's one of the reasons I why I think it's getting a resurgence in sales. It seems people are stopping CD's in favour of downloading, but also turning back to vinyl to certain extent as well.

I buy all of my music from iTunes just for the convenience. When I hear a song, I want it now. I'm definitely not an audiophile, so iTunes music sounds good enough to me. I really think that the resurgence of sales for vinyl is purely out of it being a "retro" fad. It's currently cool to do vinyl but one has no idea of knowing how long this will last. Speaking of vinyl, I do have a record player hooked up to my stereo, although all the records we own are my parents

A few albums I highly recommend (all of these are Amazon MP3 links):

Colour Revolt - Plunder, Beg, and Curse
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
M83 - Saturdays = Youth

Vinyl i think is really fashionable too. I mean shows like One Tree Hill use vinyl all the time and it looks really cool lets face it.

I REFUSE THOUGH! I refuse to be sucked into pissing my money away on vinyl. Haha. Record players are like £80 for a usb one anyways! Not the cheapest in the world is it now :-(

Coldplay in 3 days!!!

I wonder when digital will match or surpass analog sound quality? It's close (if not already here) in imaging as some high end digital cameras are rivaling film.

I think a lot of people understand that digital audio is inferior quality, but given the convenience, just don't care. The sad part is that these market forces push everyone to follow the masses, making it harder for those who prefer quality over convenience to stick with vinyl.

It's unfortunate but true. Convenience and price with acceptable quality is what wins marketshare. I mean it appllies to everything really. Super Audio CD never really took off because people decided to stick with what they know and what is cheaper. CD's.

Betamax (or however u spell it) lost out to VHS because its cheaper even though quality was slightly worse. Blu-Ray won over HD-DVD because PS3 owners, out of convenience and common sense, bought blu-ray discs instead of investing in a second player.

And digital downloads will eventually be mainstream because you get what you want straightaway with no hassle. Way of the world really. It's not necessarily a bad thing though. If you prefer CD's or Vinyl buy them but the mainstream wants whats most convenience and cost effective.

I rabbeted on a bit there. lol

2008 has been a very interesting year in music so far. The best releases have been from bands that were popular in the '80s.

Asia - Phoenix
Journey - Revelation
Whitesnake - Good To Be Bad

These three are all great albums.

Dokken's "Lightning Strikes Again" is also getting good buzz.
