OK. I'm going to go in a different direction here with drinks that I wished I could've had when I was in Russia.
Fanta! When I lived in Russia, the only recognizable soft drinks that were readily available were Pepsi and Fanta. I always kind of found it funny to pronounce Fanta so it rhymed with father rather than Santa. The building I lived in had a little store in the bottom (typical Moscow mega-apartment buildling) and it rarely had anything in those days just after the breakup of the USSR. Whenever there was a line there, you would go get in it first and then ask what was in the store second. One day they got a bunch of cases of Fanta. I bought 2 or 3 cases I think and the Russians looked at me like I was nuts because it was considered a little expensive and a treat to get one bottle. The exchange rate was shooting up to like 400:1 or something (it started at 30:1 when I got there and was over 2000:1 by the time I left 2 years later). |
