Yeah, photography is great fun! I shoot on a Canon EOS 350D normally, unless my Dad's feeling nice enough to let me borrow his EOS 30D.

Here's a couple of my favourite shots. The first is a shot of the Statue of Liberty. I took this from the back of Liberty Island, near where the ferry departs. The second shot, is a shot of the Queensboro Bridge in New York City, taken from the adjacent cable car. Note the workmen on top of the bridge. I must admit, I didn't notice them until I got the pictures onto my iMac after the trip!

I'd also like to take this moment to point out how handy the new feature in the 'Open' window is, allowing you to browse your iPhoto library straight off. It made it a doddle to upload these photos, and I've found it quite handy in Photoshop, too.

Neat perspective of the Statue of Liberty. Photography is a great way to share your personal perspective of the world and how you see things. Must be one of the reasons I love it so much. Those guys look pretty insignificant in the mass of metal that makes up that bridge.

I just started seriously playing with my new birthday present - a Nikon D300. I'm starting to get the hang of the advanced features, but it's going to take a lot of practice. Of course, that's what I wanted anyway.

Here are a couple of samples from Brookside Gardens - a spectacular oasis in the Washington, DC suburbs.

I don't know what this is but I love the way it's offset by the pastel-like background.

That second image is awesome. It looks like a Monet type painting only with something to focus on in the foreground.

Ok so I finally sorted some photos I'd like to post for a bit of feedback. I took them when I went into London to the Tate Modern for the day. I've had my camera, a Pentax K100D, for a while but I've only just started to use it more. I'm very much a beginner. This was also my first attempt at shooting in RAW and consequently my time using Aperture (the trial).

Be gentle, but I'd appreciate some feedback. Here is a link to the Flickr Set and I've extracted my favourite image below.

Tried to do a tilt-shift (fake miniature shot) today..
Think I almost got it, I'm using the Gimp which doesn't have Lens Blur, the effect would probably be stronger with Photoshop's filter.

Nice job. The giveaway is really the lack of DOF (depth of field). If you shot the real scene, the depth of field would be much greater. Try using the smallest aperture you can in order to create the sharpest scene you can, and then add blur if needed in the GIMP.

Thanks, I'll try that, I only have a compact camera - so only two possible options of aperture (f/7.0 and f/2.8).. I think I used f7.0 on this one though, so it's the wrong one. I'll remember that the next time and see if it has a noticeable effect.

Edit: yeah, checked now.. It was taken using Aperture: f/10.4 .. (which is what the 7.0 setting becomes after some zoom)

A compact camera actually works better. Point and shoots have tiny sensors, so they have huge depth of field without needing huge apertures. The DOF on a point and shoot is with any given aperture is equivalent to that on an SLR 4 stops higher. So, if you used f/2.8 on your point and shoot, it's equivalent to f/11 on an SLR. f/7 is roughly equivalent to f/19, which should give you great DOF. Could you upload the original? I'd like to see how much blur is lens blur and how much is gaussian blur or whatever you used in the GIMP.
