Down here in Texas, we say coke. In the thread that inspired this thread, I was using soda so as not to confuse anyone with regional jargon. I suppose it is no different than saying Xerox or Rollerblade as generic terms, just a very regional use with coke.
"Can I have some coke?" "Sure, what kind?" "Dr Pepper." |

I say pop, like my fellow brethren of the frigid north.

Haha, a figure of speech, I assure you. It's definitely not frigid - quite pleasant actually. The highest it's been in years, for this time of year I assure you.
You know, I haven't seen a single snow fall that's lasted more than an hour? Incredible! I hope it stays this way! Back on topic though - I seriously wonder why we've had a difference in naming our soft drinks? Why do some choose soda, and some choose pop. Hm... interesting.

I visited my sister in Fargo, ND. We went out to eat and I asked the waitress what kinds of drinks they had. She replied: "We don't serve drinks on Sunday".
![]() That reminds me of something I like to call the Ohio Incident II. I was in Columbus, OH with my wife and some of her family members. We went through the drive-through at a White Castle and ordered several bags of food. Before we pulled off, the window person said "Don't forget your pop!". I said, "Pop? That's the sound a balloon makes when it breaks!" My wife, who was annoyed and embarrassed at my lame attempt at humor proceeded to smack me up side the head. ![]() |

I don't use a generic term for it. We tend not to in the UK, although my Dad says Pop sometimes. We tend to just use the name of the type of drink, Coke, Fanta, Dr Pepper etc. Although Coke means Pepsi as well, so if you go to a pub and ask for a coke you might get Pepsi.
