Then use a network that's already in place.. IRC.. there are clients on every platform out there, including web based ones (both java and plain web).

No reason for reinventing the wheel with a solution that doesn't scale..

I'm well aware of IRC/web based chat stuff. But that doesn't change a lot of the strain that gets put on a server. Plus there are issues of speed and browser accessibility.

We aren't saying our solution was perfect, but it's what we felt was the best option for the largest range of users.

Each live event we'll have something better, but without knowing the details we were working with you can't very well criticize the situation.

Well, just saying that it's a proven system, macrumors did it last year (One moderated channel with a bot that relayed the live text, this way you didn't have to wait for every 60 sec reload of the webpage, the text came to you as each line was written. And one other channel for chatter between users. All this done using IRC.) unless I'm mixing up events now.

Chatrooms become too messy with this many users anyway.

Haha, are you reading what you're typing? You were JUST complaining about not letting more people in the chatroom!

Yeah, I added that after thinking about how many people there were in the macrumors chat that time..

Should probably phrased it like this: "Well, it's not that important really, chatrooms become too busy when there are many people in them.".

And it was more of giving an advice than complaining really, your reasoning for the limit was technological, not social, so I mentioned one way of doing it that takes less server capacity.
