Just for a bit of fun I wondered if people named their Macs, and if so what they were called?

I have never really done it, always wanted to, just never came up with anything I liked. Anyway now I have, I've started to name them after ancient cities, largely from the Bible, but ancient non-the-less. My iBook is now called Ephesus and my iMac is now called Philippi (fitting I thought!), not sure whether to carry it on to my iPod (currently called PhilPod).

So what do you guys call your Macs?

Ha, I was triggered to name mine when I set up the file sharing, I didn't really want to call it iMac or Phil Bowell's iMac, hence the new names!

After watching Neon Genesis Evangelion (nerdy, I know), I decided to name my computers after the 3 Magi (which the 3 super-computers were called in that show). So, my main Windows PC is called Balthazar, my MacBook is called Melichor, and my old Windows PC is called Gaspar. The names get transfered when I upgrade as well - my new iMac (in 2 years ) will be Balthazar.

I thought it was rather interesting.

Now I have to think up a better SSID.

I won't be taking the names with me, each machine has their own name. So when I upgrade my iBook in the next couple of years maybe, it will get a new city name, probably Galatia.

It's interesting, most people I have seen who have named their machines, are naming them with old/ancient names.

@Yuiichi, whats an SSID?

Computer names, SSIDs, they are always tough to call. In my work environment it's imperative that people know which computer is which, so "Matt Hoult's MacBook" is kind of a necessity.

With regard to networking and so on I have always chopped and changed but kept themes. Most of them centre around certain animals; birds, lizards and so on. When I got my first Mac it all seemed rather fitting. Right now it's all very basic, but I need to sort it out soon. Thanks for provoking the thought.

(With regard to simply calling my Mac something, I never did but she's definitely female.)

I should really give mine an obscure geeky name like "790" or "Memnarch".

@Phil - SSID stands for Service Set Identifier. It's a fancy name for the name you give your network. Mine right now is another reference to anime (which is not my thing anymore) and I need to think up something more fitting.

I've always named mine. I'm a marine scientist by vocation, so all mine are marine themed. The drives are water: Flood, Typhoon, Vortex, even Droplet and Ripple for my jumpdrives - and the machines are sea life. My G5 is Squid and the MBP Nautilus.
It jus doesn't feel right to not name my computers. It drives me nutso that my boss uses three machines, each one named the same, after his dog. (And don't get me started about network conflicts.)

What do people actually name? The hard drive or something else? I like my Mac nameless.
