You name the computer as seen on your network. It's under System Preferences > Sharing.

I haven't named the actual computer...but I do name all my servers and external harddrives. They're all based on "old fashioned" names...ie names 'old folks' are likely to have.

A few: Albert, Bernard, Clyde, Dwight, Ernest

Firewall, runs a version of openwrt called White Russian (after the drink), I named it Stalin (strict and russian).

Fileserver, called Raidmonster (it runs raid5, is big and noisy as a monster).

Movie-box, called Lumiere (after the Lumière brothers, they were among the first movie makers).

NLSU2, runs debian, they are often called slugs, mine is therefor named Brainslug (from futurama).

Powerbook, called Macker, it's a spin on the Norwegian word makker, means "work mate" or "partner"

... etc..

All I've done is removed by last name from the sharing name, and renamed Macintosh HD to Internal.

I've always felt that in some weird way naming my computer gave it a personality, and that a good name meant a good personality. But then, I'm crazy anyway. /shrug

My Macbook was named Zie Zie, and it was a she. I name most of my inanimate possessions because they take on a personality in my skewed brain. And it makes it easier to talk to it when you're trying to get something to work. But Zie Zie's hard drive has died and I'm about to send it off to the Apple Store to get her repaired. I'm still debating on whether I ought to change her name if her hard drive is replaced, because it won't be the same "person" anymore. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm a wee bit nuts, but it makes me sane with my machines.

I like the themed approach a lot of people have taken... I might need to try that.

Since I'm an accountant by day, I could try naming my computers and drives "debit, credit, depreciation, Black Scholes, Uncle Sam," etc.

Your name suggestions got me to thinking that maybe I ought to rename my machines by how much they set me back. My Macbook would then be called "My $1,500 Friend."

I'm a nameless kind up guy too... but I did name my hard drive and external hard drive just to identify them.
