You could theoretically use an applescript, but that would be very slow. I'd recommend a third party mouse driver.

My might mouse scroll ball hadn't been working at all for a few months, so today I decided to fix it. I opened up the mighty mouse and got to the scroll ball enclosure using these instructions. I then opened the enclosure to clean the scroll ball and the magnets surrounding it. No wonder it didn't work. Everything was covered in dirt. The ball was pretty clean, explaining why a cloth didn't fix it. The magnets were almost entirely covered in dirt and grime. I wiped everything off with a q tip and rubbing alcohol. I reassembled it all, and tested it. The scroll ball works perfectly! In the process, I somehow managed to break the right click functionality. It's odd since it works perfectly when I test it with the shell off, but with it on it doesn't work. Oh well. I mapped the secondary button to the center button, which should be more reliable anyway. Just figured I'd share this for any people thinking about junking their Mighty Mouse. You will slightly damage the mouse if you're not careful, but if you have an hour or so to do it, you can get it cleaned up inside.

I know that the little ball is forever getting stuck... but it IS easy to clean.

I am nuts for my mighty (got 3 of them)

The simplistic design, arranging what I want to work on which buttons, etc.

I wouldn't change it for anything else.

..but that's just me!

I like the MM, but then, it's well established around here that my opinions on the usability of things are vastly different from others'. I love the free scrolling on the mouse ball, and I've not had the problems with right click that others have had - that would have gotten me to drop it like a hot rock.
Your mileage may vary, though. See if you can find someplace or someone where you can try one out for a bit.

I don't like it at all as I mentioned. It's not terrible, but its way to pricey. I would be happier with a $15 USB mouse over the $50 MM if it hadn't come with my mac.

For me it is the Marble Mouse. Essentially a trackball with 4 assignable buttons on it. I love it for how precise it is, with no "pawing" around my desktop/mouse pad to make it work. It is awesome for precise stuff such as Photoshop. Very easy to move the cursor pixel-by-pixel. Plus it is nice and fast for large movements by just giving the ball a firm flick to spin it. I don't know how most people use a mouse. They drive me up a wall at work, having to carefully hold down the click while lifting and repositioning the mouse to continue a scroll when you run out of desk or pad space during a selection or drag.

Plus it is optical (which I know is standard for the mouse too) and never, ever hangs up or skips.

For the time that I've used the Mighty Mouse (read: not very long), I didn't really like it. This is mainly because of the shape. It's kind of like a smooth stone and gripping it to actually press down the buttons causes me to activate the side buttons. That's sort of annoying.

Being a gamer, I chose the Logitech G5. Now this is a mouse. With on the fly sensitivity settings (anywhere between 2000 - 400 DPI), a weight cartridge, and some extra side buttons, it's really a great mouse. Since it's laser, it's extremely accurate and works on almost any surface. I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering a new mouse. It's a little on the pricy side (depending on where you get it), but it's totally worth the cost.

I've loved using the MM. When i first bought it I was very skeptical because of the price (I got the bluetooth version) but i have been very happy with the results.

Like almost everyone i know, I have also had problems with the trackball but I just dab the ball with a bit of water, push the ball firmly on a clean, white piece of paper and roll around for 30 seconds and then its as good as new.

I use it with a Mac Mini but when i eventually get a MB sometime this year I will be using it with that as well because its so easy with bluetooth.

It may be different in the UK, but it is $45 on Amazon, $5 less than the wired mighty mouse.
