Ok, here is the issue. I had a slight accident yesterday, caught the cable of my laptop as it was charging and it flew off my desk with a loud thump. It seemed ok, except I had a couple of kernal panics yesterday evening, I turned it off and left it. This evening I went to use my iBook and turned it on. It chimed as usual but then nothng happened. I can hear the fan, but nothing appears on my screen. My harddrive whirs up initially but then is silent. I guess something broke when it plummeted to the floor. Just wondered if anyone was able to advise me on what could be damaged? Or suggestions to revive the beast.

It could be the hard drive. A fall like that could really mess up some data. If you can boot it up into target disk mode, do that and use DiskWarrior on it.

It's a good sign that you're getting the chimes, as this means the initial startup diagnostics have been passed. No chimes is usually an indication of a logic board failure.
More than likely you have damaged the hard drive, follow bbb's suggestion. Best case scenario, DiskWarrior can fix the drive. Worst case scenario you'll need to replace the drive, hope you have a backup. |

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. I've got my iBook loaded in Target Disk mode, unfortunately I don't have a spare £50 to buy DiskWarrior so I can't go down that route (I would if it was my primary machine!). I'm wondering if an Archive & Install might fix things?

Good news! Must have been some corruption in a system file which the archive fixed. Maybe if you get a MacBook in the future MagSafe can safe you from this kind of damage!
