Can't wait to see how this goes Josh! Any thoughts as to sticking another HDD in the optical slot, or are you just going to keep it light?

@Yuiichi My main goal is to make the machine as light as possible, so I'll just remove the optical drive and cover the slot somehow.

Just a short update: I'm getting a semi-working PowerBook today for only $190. It should be just enough for me to start the project.

Cool, looking forward to hearing about how it all goes. How did you manage to track down something so cheap?

@philbowell: It was a lucky find on Craigslist. It only has a few minor case defects. Besides that, it runs great!

Sweet. I should probably look on Craigslist a little more, people always seems to find some cracking deals!

I had a 12" Powerbook and it was quite possibly the best Mac portable ever made. The design, durability, size, weight... it was an excellent machine all around.

Thickness has never been much of an issue for me on the road. 1" thick is still pretty thin. But get in coach and try to open a 15" or even 13" screen on a tray table. Yeah, that's what I thought.

I'd love to see a 10" or 12" widescreen portable from Apple one day, but I doubt it will happen. It's unfortunate, but they've made the decision and the Air is it.

That sad, for true road warriers who just need email/web and basic productivity apps like Office on the road, the ole G4 12" Powerbook is still a great machine and will be for a few years to come.
