Hey Everyone,

I'm considering an update to my current setup. Right now I've got a black MacBook, 2.0 Ghz, pre-santarosa, HDD upgraded to 320GB (still have the 120 laying around), 3 gigs of RAM, Superdrive. I'm thinking of upgrading to a MacBook Air and a Mac Mini, because I travel around a lot, and I need to bring my laptop with me every day when I go to work. It would be a lot more convenient, and I don't do much heavy computing on it anyway. My question is this: If I got a Mac Mini for my home system, would I be able to put my 320GB HDD in it, and would I be able to put the MacBook's SuperDrive in it, because I go around internationally, and my SuperDrive has modified firmware to play all DVD regions. Any knowledge or suggestions?

Thanks!

The most simple answer to your question is yes. You can. The MacBook and the Mac mini use the same drives so there is no issue there. What you won't be able to do is keep the same system install however. The drive would require formatting and starting over using the original disks that came with the Mac mini, or a Leopard retail disk if the mini came with 10.4 originally and you have a copy. If you don't do this then it may boot (or it may not), but a lot of things will crash and be generally buggy (Airport is usually the first thing people notice.

The SuperDrive will work in theory, however each drive is different, so there might be a little tweaking involved. You will likely be fine.

Awesome, thanks a lot! I forgot to mention it before, but do the MacBook and the Mac Mini have the same RAM, too? I'd love to hold onto my RAM, as well.

Thanks!

I believe that the MacBook and the Mac mini have the same RAM. The Mac mini and iMac use laptop memory, so it should be no trouble.

Good luck with your purchases.

Absolutely, the RAM can be swapped as well.
