Check out this link to see why the iPhone may cost as little as $100 to manufacture (I realise there are other costs to Apple, but they are seriously minimal in these quantities).
I remember reading an article about 18 months ago that did a cost breakdown of the average Nokia phone, it worked out that Nokia added a huge amount of markup on their phones.

So it doesn't surprise me about the iPhone, especially when you consider that the parts are all very standard. We're really paying for the chance to get our hands on the UI and the design.

I completely agree, Ginamos. The point I was originally trying to make is that there are an awful lot of assumptions being made right now (especially by journalists) based on the iPhone being fairly well subsidised. Still, I haven't heard a definitive statement on the subject, which changes things dramatically in terms of future possibilities, pricing and carrier plans.

As the saying goes "no one knows anything", I guess we'll just have to wait to see how things work themselves out.

I'm sticking with the iPod Touch for the moment, I think iPhone prices/plans have the potential to drop a lot lower than their current levels.
