So why did you want to get a G3 iBook in particular? I myself keep toying with the option of getting a 12" PB to have as my mobile machine rather than lugging the 17" around, but can't quite drop $1000 on it just yet... But what are you after with the iBook?

I was thinking the same thing. I love the iBooks and PowerBooks but G3's? Darn.
@Divigation: While I loved the look, feel and usefulness of the 12" PowerBook I would highly recommend getting a MacBook or 12" iBook instead. In my experience it's hard to go back and forth between PPC and Intel, the 12" PowerBook is less reliable than the 12" iBook and it's also much more expensive/difficult to fix/upgrade. While it's one of my favourite designs ever as a consumer, it's the most awful design ever as a technician and this inflates every price connected with it. The MacBook has been a great mobile machine in my experience, and I should know, it travels everywhere with me and has for over 6 months. Never more than 10 feet away it's been sturdy, quick, reliable and easy to carry. I love it!

Hoult - that is exactly my thinking, a MacBook costs as much as a 12" PB and is Intel. More than anything it is the PPC that has stopped me from buying one. I am waiting until I get setup at Grad schol to decide if I am going to be able to get a MacBook for portability or if I will have to take my MBP with me. Basically if the school gives me an up to date machine for my studio I will get a MacBook, but if they still have Cubes in the studios (which I hope they do so I can use a Cube), I will be taking my MBP for the power.

Hey, here's a question...
I remember when it was PowerBook versus iBook, the Powerbooks' heating was underneath the computer, so it was much less of an actual *lap*top than the iBook. Is that still the case? And, is the MacBook Pro less reliable than the MacBook, as you say the PowerBook was less so than the iBook? |

As far as my experience goes, both run about the same temperature, with the MBP actually being a little cooler. No, I don't own a MBP - this is all from temperature research I did near the beginning of owning my MacBook to see if it was running too hot. In either case, both still get warm but they're manageable to be used as a laptop.
Perhaps Matt can speak more to the reliability as well as his own experiences, as he has had both!
